IN AND AROUND THE PENINSULA

Zionist Socialist Party.

A reception in honour of the fifth anni-

\ersary was held al the Zionist Hall on

~unday night.

l\1r. Achron 'ms i 11 the chair, and said that though the beginnings had -been diffi- cult, the Party had achieved a large measure of suc('ess · and vvas responsible for the

~pread of the ideal of labour. He gave a survey of the influence of the moYement on

the Jewish world. ·

Messages of congratulation \\ere read.

including one from the Histadrut.

Mrs. A. Lieberman: on behalf of the Bnoth Zion A~scciation, e ·tf'1Hlf'd I1earty greeting:".

The Bnoth Zion, she said. were greatly interested in "orkin~ "oman in Palestine and owed the Labour mo\'emcnt a greal deht of gratitude for all they had achicwcl.

They were all working for the same ideal and the most essential thing was harmoniou · rn-operation.

Adv. ~l. S. Comay, on behalf of the Dor. hci Zion -.sociat10n, ~aid it "as a p.rc>nt privilege to <'.·pr<'ss <'ongratulation~ on behalf of the pioneer Zionist Society in South Africa. In presentjug their good wishef:', however, he had to stre that actually there was very little difference between the aims and ideals of the Dorshei Zion Associali<"' and the Zionist Socialist Party. The sole function of each group or party was to help forward Zionism. Unless the small groups of South African Zionists worked together, Zionism here could not be effective.

Mr. Smith, on behalf of the S.A. Labour Party, said it gave him great pleasure to convey the heartiest congratulations on their success during a period of five years a hoped their future efforts would meet '' ith even greater success. He hoped they would be able to co-operate in many directions to the benefit of all the people of South Africa.

Dr. 1. Sachs, on behalf of the League for a Working Palestine, in conveying congratu- lations, said that the labour of the Jewish worker in Palestine was national. The labourer was an idealist and capitalism was inimical to the ideal of national labour an<l the historic realisation of an ideal. He wished the Party success and fruitful work in the future.

After the· tea interval :Mr. Z. Avin and

\fr. L. Tager (of 1 ohannesburg) addressed the gathering on the work and achievement of Labour jn Palestine.

The musical programme consisted of duets hy Bernard Friedland. Benjamin Rabinowitz, Millie Glassman and Clara Friedland, pupils of Miss Kessel. recitations bv l\Hss H. Oblowitz and songs by Mr. Blo~m.

Mr. B. Padowitz proposed a vote of thanh to speakers and artists.

A grand dance will be held in the Wood-

!'tock Talmud Torah Hall, Argyle Street, on Sunday, 16th June, at 8.15 p.m.

Cape Jewish Aged Hon.1e.

Sunday night's r·onccrt at the Home was a well-organised affair, and reflects much credit on those re..;ponsible for the arrange-, men ts.

Mesdames

N.

Stoller, S. Lear, Miss Stoller and the Matron, Mrs. S. Franks, had worked inclefatigahly to provide the jnmates with an Pvc•ning of real en1~ ·tainment.

.Many memhec of the commillec and several frif•nds and supporters of the lnf't i-

i ution were present. including the Mayor and layoress (Mr. and :Vlrs. Louis Gradner), the President, i\lr. L. Pinn~ the Hon. Trea-

~urer. 1 Tr. S. B. Hersman: Ir. and 1 lrs. :\T.

aucl Mrs. I. Ochher", Mrs. S. Zuckerman. 1\1 rs. S. Fcitelson, Dr. Hehecca Katz, l\Ir. J\.

\athan and Mr. t\. Davis.

D nring the inten a 1 Mr. L. Pinn. in n hrief speech, thanked the visitors on behalf of both the committee and inmate for their µresenc<" and for thr interest shown in the Home. He a]so thallked the organisPrs for their su<'cessful effort:- in providing such a

\erv fine Pntertai11ment.

1\1r. H. Rosen <'\'.l)ff'S ed the appreciation of all to the artists, who had voluntarily ..rome forward that ew•ning. and who had so

pleased the old folk.

One of the inmates, in a very effecthe Ppeech, said how much they were grateful for the concert that had been provided for them, and said that they would be glad if it

"ere possible for more of these entertain- ments to be arrauged. He felt sure they realised how much the inmates looked for-

" ard to such programmes of._music, and also to the presence of members of the committee and of the public. He would like it more generally known how comfort- able the inmates were. To them all it was a real Home and the many kindnesses they received and the {!eneral comfort which "as provided for them made the Institution supreme, not only in South Africa, but in other parts of the world, so far as such institutions are concerned.

H.efreshments werr handed round by the matron and staff, and a very pleasant even- ing was brought to a conclusion by the singinp: pf Hatikvah and the Tational Anthem.

a great extent.

Speaking of the work of the Congress, Mrs. Clouts analysed the various resolutions·

the Board helped to keep up the morale of the Jewish public.

The Mayor, Mr. L. Gradner, made an eloquent appeal on behalf of the Polish Jews. He said the plight of the
