'·The Spiritual Side of the Progress in Palestine"-Lhe subject chosen by the speaker-pr°' ed to he of ahsorhing interest to the audience.

The function of Palestine is to present to the world the Jew as he really is, said Re,.

Cohen. In any other country of the world he is only a fraction of a Jew. In Palestine his Jewish consciousness must develop. He recognises a great creative spirit at work and finds that he can he a proud Jew with some- thing definite to be proud of-since the University with its great scholars, the Herzlia Gymnasium, the Hebrew Kindergartens, the new Jewish music and the Hebrew Theatre have all originated out of the free creative forces of the people.

Mr. Cohen said that he felt that in spite of all the ad verse circumstances the Jews had to contend with, Palestine would de- velop spiritually into the country which had been dreamed of and prayed for for cen- turies. The new meaning and dignity which they would get from Palestine would be an ample return for all the money put into it.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the speaker by Mrs. Taubes, who also wished Rev. and Mrs. Cohen hon voyage on their trip to Palestine.

They shou]d also celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of Dagania which is a monu- ment to Joseph Trumpeldor.

Mr. M. Ben-Arie, who spoke in Engli h.

said that since the death of Trumpeldor many changes had taken place so that an incorrect interpretation of his ideals and personality had been made by certain groups.

It was wrong to say that Trumpeldor was a hero, or that he was a militarist. Trnm- peldor was not a man who wanted to shed blood for the sake of militaristic aims. His fight was a fight for righteousness and

j U8Lice. He was the founder of the great workeri:;' army who sacrificed their youth and th<' best of their life for the honour and pr<>:-lige of their nation.

The 1111itv of the \\orkcrs in th riots ol' 1921 and I929 taught kwry a lesson as to

\\ho was the back hone of the Palestine

Yi~huh; it is the Chalutzim who are in th<' trenches in defence of their nation's rights on the fields of Sharon and Galilee. When modern history comes to be written, said

\h. Ben-Arie, the heroism of the Jewi h

\rnrkers, of which Trumpeldor was one, will he realised and it will have to be acknow- lcdg-ed that they were the creators of the ne\>\ type of Jew. Not only politically and economically has the worker been the pioneer hut also culturally as the great reviver of tllf' Hehrew language.

M1. Z. Avin, speaking in Yiddish, -:aid that the day of the death of Trumpeldor was a national anniversary. Trumpeldor interpreted Zionism as the establishment of a foundation of labour in Eretz Israel, as the creation of the spirit of "Chai utzism." He understood the conditions of the people and the land and tried lo reconcile the one with the other. He knew that this was difficult, but was undeterred by all obstacles. The faith iu the heroic qualities of the people and their thirst for freedom sustained him.

He urged the people to build up the land 'vith their own hands and saw in the labour- ing class the backbone of the country. In as far as we penetrate into the ideals of Trumpeldor, in so far shall we hasten the achievement of our purpose.
