Die Amerikaners noem dit “moonshine”, die Duitsers noem dit “Schnapps” en die Switsers verwys daarna as “Kirsch” maar hier by ons staan dit bekend as Witblits en Mampoer.
Die Mampoerfees is sedert 1987 deel van die stad en Junie beteken Mampoerfees. Die fees vind op Saterdag 6 Junie plaas en be- soekers kan van 09:00 tot 14:00 kom proe
en koop.
Die sowat 70 stalletjies sal oorgenoeg eet- en drinkgoed bied met nuwe mampoergeure soos appel, lemoen en piesang wat ook bekendgestel word. Met 10 kosstalletjies sal niemand honger ly nie en heerlike sosaties en vetkoek sal te koop wees.

Die oorsprong van die naam mampoer is nie duidelik nie. Volgens oorlewering is die skopdop vernoem na Mampoeroe, ‘n stam- hoof van die Pedi-volk. Die mampoer is glo van maroelas gestook wat volop in skere gebiede noord van die Vaalrivier voorkom.
Daar word vertel dat Mampoeroe waarskyn- lik ook mampoer aan Generaal Joubert se manne verkoop het.

stroom - Oorgewig en vetsugtigheid in volwassenes en kinders in Suid- Afrika het die afgelope drie dekades toegeneem.
Navorsing wys dat byna twee der- des van die Suid-Afrikaanse popula- sie oorgewig is. Luidens navorsing deur prof Hans de Ridder van die Skool vir Biokinetika, Rekreasie en Sportwetenskap by die Noordwes- Universiteit, is dit die vroue in Suid- Afrika wat ’n groter probleem as die mans het, met soveel as 70% van alle vroue wat oorgewig is. Sowat 38%
van oorgewig vroue (4 uit elke 10) word as klinies obees geklassifiseer wat beteken ’n LMI van meer as 30. “Ons definieer obesiteit as die ab- normale of oormatige akkumuler- ing van vet in die menslike liggaam wat gesondheidsrisiko’s soos onder andere kardiovaskulêre siektes, hoë bloeddruk en diabetes inhou,” sê hy.
De Ridder is pas weer as die enigste vlak 4 Antropometris in Afrika geklas- sifiseer. Antropometrie is die weten- skap agter die meting van mense se liggame vir gesondheids- en sport- doeleindes.
Volgens De Ridder is daar tans net 16 antropometriste in die wêreld wat op dié hoogste vlak gekwalifiseer is.
Tydens die eksamen wat hy pas in Skotland afgelê het, het hy ’n finale punt van 95% behaal en sy akkredi- tasie is vir die volgende vier jaar hervestig.
Dié wetenskap maak gebruik van gespesialiseerde tegnieke om mense te meet, juis omdat die menslike liggaam baie gekompliseerd en in- gewikkeld is om te meet. Dié data speel ’n baie belangrike rol in die be- paling van ’n betrokke land se vlak van obesiteit, asook vir die ontwerp van klere en toerusting. Hy sê die an- tropometriese data van Suid-Afrika- ners het oor die afgelope drie deka- des heelwat verander. Hy skryf dié toename in gewig toe aan ’n onge- sonde leefstyl wat onder andere ’n oormatige inname van ongesonde of verkeerde kossoorte en dan veral te min oefening insluit.
Antropometriste doen basiese met- ings soos velvoue, ledemaat- en rom- pomtrekke, skeletale beenlengtes, ensovoorts, maar dan ook meer ge- vorderde metings soos persentasie liggaamsvet, persentasie been- en spiermassa, liggaamsvolumes, opper- vlakte-areas, driedimensionele lig- gaamsvorme, somatotipes ens.
In die gesondheidswêreld word an- tropometrie gebruik om mense vir obesiteit, oorgewig en liggaamsmas-
sa-indeks te klassifiseer en op hierdie manier kan bepaal word of hulle ’n gesondheidsrisiko is al dan nie. Op die sportveld word atlete se persen- tasie vet, spier en been gemeet, want dit speel ’n baie belangrike rol tydens kondisionering en het ’n groot in- vloed op prestasie.
Kinders word ook gemeet en ge- monitor vir groei, ryping en veral ook aspekte soos obesiteit en onder- voeding.
“Vroeëre navorsing aan die NWU het bewys dat Suid-Afrikaanse kinders, naas Amerika en Brittanje, die derde hoogste obesiteitsyfer ter wêreld het.
“Kinders wat minder as tien duisend treë per dag stap, loop die risiko om met kroniese siektes soos obesiteit, hoë bloeddruk, cholesterol of tipe 2-diabetes gediagnoseer te word,” sê De Ridder.
Hy sê dit is daarom van kardinale belang dat kinders vanaf ’n jong ou- derdom aktief moet wees. “Hulle moet speel, LO doen op skool, aan sport deelneem en ’n aktiewe lewen- styl volg.
“Die rol wat ons skole en veral die ouers in hierdie verband speel, is ook baie belangrik om te verseker dat ons Suid-Afrikaanse kinders ’n aktiewe en gesonde lewenstyl handhaaf.”

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerks- dorp - It is well known that men should avoid cigarette smoking if they want to become dads, however a new study suggests that they should also steer clear of other nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes and nicotine- containing patches or gum, to increase their likelihood to con- ceive.
“The study showed that nico- tine has adverse effects on hu- man sperm that could harm a man’s ability to get a woman pregnant,” said the lead resear- cher, Dr Peter Oyeyipo, from the Division of Medical Physiology at Stellenbosch University’s Fa- culty of Medicine and Health Sciences. It was World No To- bacco Day on Sunday 31 May.
“People forget that cigarettes are not the only nicotine-con- taining products - patches and gum used for nicotine replace- ment also contain the sub- stance.”
This laboratory study (in vitro) was recently published in the sci- entific journal Andrologia and found that nicotine negatively affected the sperm cell’s ability to swim (motility), the amount of live cells (viability) and the sperm’s ability to join with the female egg (acrosome reaction).
When men are exposed to nico-
tine it shows up in their seminal fluid, where sperm cells come in contact with it.
The study investigated the effect of nicotine exposure on the sperm cells of 12 healthy males. In a laboratory, the sperm cells were exposed to four different concen- trations of nicotine over different periods of time. In order to esta- blish at what concentration nico- tine adversely affects sperm pa- rameters, the amounts of nico- tine were similar to and higher than the levels that men would be exposed to through passive, light, medium and heavy smok- ing. “Low nicotine concentra- tions, equal to the amount of in- cidental exposure a passive smo- ker would experience in his day- to-day life, had little or no effect on sperm cells. But as the level of exposure increased, so did the negative impact,” said Oyeyipo, a post-doctoral fellow at the Stellenbosch University Repro- ductive Research Group (SUR- RG), whose research focuses on male reproduction.
He does have some good news for former or current smokers hoping to become fathers in future: Earlier research showed that a man’s sperm cell produc- tion can return to normal after he quits smoking or other forms of nicotine use.

According to Captain Paul Ramaloko, North West police spokesperson, the fraudsters target people at ATM’s in busi- ness areas and steal their bank cards during transactions. It has been reported that these fraudsters pose as good Samari- tans near ATM’s and offer assistance to unsuspecting victims and in the process swap their cards
Police are alerting the public to always avoid ATM fraud by practicing the following tips:
Remain aware of your surroundings without allowing anything or anyone to distract you while doing your ATM banking or transactions.
Approach an ATM only under the right conditions and, for your own security, be alert and conscious of your sur- roundings.
Choose a familiar and well-lit ATM where you are more visible and safe.
Scan the area for suspicious looking characters before you approach the ATM.
If you think the ATM is faulty, cancel the transaction im- mediately, report the fault to your bank and try another ATM to transact.
Have your card ready in your hand before you approach the ATM to avoid opening your purse, bag or wallet while in the queue.
Be cautious of strangers offering to help as they could be trying to distract you in order to get your card or PIN details.
Follow the instructions on the ATM screen carefully.
Don’t approach security guards for assistance whilst do- ing banking transactions
Never force your card into the slot as it might have been tampered with.
Never use ATMs where the card slot, key pad or screen have been tampered with - it could be an attempt to get hold of your card.
Tips on protecting your PIN:
Your PIN is your personal key to secure banking and it is crucial to keep it that way.
Memorise your PIN, never write it down or share it with anyone, not even your spouse or a bank official.
Don’t use an obvious or guessable PIN such as your birth date, and change your PIN as often as you can.
Don’t let anyone stand too close to you whilst at the ATM in order to keep both your card and PIN safe.
Shield the keypad when entering your PIN to ensure that no one can see it.
Tips on protecting your cash:
Some fraudsters wait until you’ve drawn your cash to take advantage. Be wary of people loitering around at the ATM.
Take your time to complete your transaction and secure your card and your cash in your wallet, handbag or pocket before leaving the ATM.

Klerksdorp Record, Orkney - For Orkney fitness junky Abie Botha it is as simple as the ABC to cycle for the children.
And this year it will be the 17th time he takes part in the Beeld Kinderfonds Spinning Marathon that will take place at the Centu- rion Mall on 5 September.
Botha will be part of about 100 teams this year. He first started spinning in 1999 as part of a team but since 2000 he stands out as he cycles the whole 12-hour marathon on his
own.He aims to complete a total of 400 kilome- tres during the marathon and just wants to en- joy it as he tries to raise money for the kids.
The 78-year-old aims to raise R27 000 this year to better his record.

Klerksdorp Midweek, Klerksdorp - Die Prisma-tak van die Sonneblom- streek van die Vroue Landbou Unie het tydens hul maandelikse byeen- koms meer geleer oor onder andere patroonuitleg en die maak van kleuter- rokkies.
Die voorsitter Breggie du Plessis het die patroonuitleg op die dag hanteer met Hermien Pretorius wat die riglyne met die maak van partytjierokkies han- teer het.
Die volgende VLU Prisma-tak by- eenkoms en vergadering vind plaas by
Flamwood Landgoed op Donderdag 11 Junie om 09:15 vir 09:30. Tydens hierdie geleentheid sal Corrie Yssel ‘n opgevoude tafel met eetgerei en meer demonstreer.

Hermien Pretorius bespreek hier die riglyne by die maak van ‘n par- tytjierok vir ‘n kleuter. Materiaal, nate, rek en alle versiersels wat in ag geneem behoort te word. Sy is ook die ouma van ‘n tweeling. Dit is ‘n wedstryd item wat gedurende die 2016 kongres gemaak moet word.
Voorsitter Breggie du Plessis en VLU kun- stenaar Susan Marais met die tak trofee wat sy in 2014 verower het. Dit was ‘n moeilike jaar vir Marais met chemo en bestraling maar nogtans het sy geskilder.

toekoms van Suid-Afrika én van Afrikaans is in die hande van toekomstige geslagte en daar moet moeite gedoen word om ‘n liefde vir die taal en die land by jongmense te kweek.
Dít was die boodskap by die ATKV se alge- mene jaarvergadering wat verlede maand op ATKV-Klein-Kariba gehou is. Die tema van vanjaar se jaarvergadering, wat deur afge- vaardigdes van regoor die land en Namibië bygewoon is, was “Nasiebou en versoe- ning”.
Juis vanweë die fokus op jongmense is ‘n groot getal van die ATKV se projekte op die jeug en jong volwassenes gerig, aldus dr Danny Titus, uitvoerende direkteur: kultuur van die ATKV. “Ons wil kultuur kultiveer vir nasiebou in Afrikaans. Met soveel pola- risasie in ons land, is die rol van kultuur in ons multikulturele samelewing steeds onder- ontgin. Kultuurprojekte, soos dié van die ATKV, slaag daarin om polarisasie natuur- lik te deurbreek en om mense bymekaar te bring,” het hy gesê.
Japie Gouws, besturende direkteur van die ATKV, het in sy toespraak benadruk dat die ATKV ook sterk fokus op onderwys in die land.
“Ons doen dit nie net om ‘n entoesiasme vir kultuur by jongmense te kweek nie, maar

ook om ‘n groter ondersteunende rol in die verbetering van skole se prestasies te speel.”
Volgens Gouws onderpresteer meer as 80%
van SA se 24 000 privaat- en openbare skole, of hulle bereik nie die verwagte leeruitkom- ste nie.
ATKV-projekte soos die 1000-skolestra- tegie, waar ʼn duisend skole oor vier jaar be- reik word ten einde die gehalte van dié skole te verbeter, help om dié syfers te verander, het hy gesê.
“Een van die nuwe intervensies is ook die bemagtiging van ouers en hulle integrasie by hul kinders se skoolwerk. In talle gevalle is dit die eerste keer dat ouers en kinders op
hierdie manier met mekaar omgaan.”
Die voorsitter van die ATKV-direksie, An- ton Redelinghuis, het die ATKV beskryf as ʼn “verantwoordelike korporatiewe burger”
wat ʼn leidende rol speel wanneer dit by taal- en kultuurstandpunte kom.
“Ons speel ook ʼn sterk ondersteunende rol ten opsigte van sosiaalmaatskaplike- en onderwysaangeleenthede met verskeie pro- jekte.” Hy het gesê kultuur- en taalprojekte soos die ATKV-Spelathon, die meertalig- heidsweek in Soweto, die ATKV-Rieldans- kompetisie, die Rapport-ATKV korekom- petisie en ATKV-Applous help verseker ook die gesonde stand van Afrikaans onder
jongmense van alle rasse. “Die ATKV-Tie- nertoneelkompetisie is nou vyftig jaar oud, en steeds baie gewild onder hoërskoolleer- ders landswyd.”
Die ATKV vier vanjaar sy vyf-en-tagtig- ste bestaansjaar. “Hierdie merkwaardige mylpaal is bereik omdat die ATKV oor die jare belangrike strategiese aanpassings ge- maak het om relevant te bly. En met meer as 1 000 projekte wat die afgelope jaar deur die ATKV se takke aangepak is, en ‘n 7%
toename in ledegetalle, lyk die toekoms van die ATKV, Afrikaans en ‘n gesonde multi- kulturele samelewing rooskleurig,” aldus Redelinghuis.

Comrades Marathon celebrated its 90th anniversary on Sunday 31 May. This is a great opportunity to look at the rich history from 1921 to 2015.

The Comrades Marathon is an ultra marathon between the cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
The distances vary with an “up” run (between 87km and 88km) starting from Durban and the
“down” run (approximately 89km) starting from Pietermaritzburg.
Race day history
The Comrades was run for the first time on Empire Day 24 May 1921.
From 1962 to 1994 it was ran on 31 May (a public holiday called Republic Day). After this public holi- day was scrapped in 1995, the race date was changed to Youth Day on 16 June up to 2006. From 2008 the race was held either at the end of May or the begin- ning of June ranging from 24 May to 17 June.
IdeaThe race is to remember South African soldiers killed during the war. Clapham, who had endured a 2 700 kilometre route march through sweltering German East Africa, wanted the memorial to be a unique test of the physical endurance of the entrants. To “celebrate mankind’s spirit over adversity”.
Biggest in the world
The Comrades Marathon has since grown to the world’s biggest and oldest ultra- marathon.
Massive sporting event
The Comrades attracts around 300 000 spectators and 2.5 million television view- ers.
Motto
This year the motto is Be Part of It, or in Zulu: ‘Bamba Iqhaza’.
Up and down
The race alternates each year. The 90th edition was an “up-run”, and it started at Durban City Hall at 05:30 and ended 12 hours later at the Oval Cricket Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, covering a distance of 87.72km.
Entries
The opening date for entries is usually from September to November with an entry cap of 23 000 runners. That figure is only 1 000 runners less than the num- ber allowed for the Millennium edition of the race in 2000 with a record 24 000 athletes. During that race a world record of 14 343 finished under the 12 hour time limit.
Winner’s prize money
The first man and first woman to cross the finishing line receive a whopping R375 000 each. The total prize money for the 2015 Comrades Marathon is R2.6 million. In addition there are also bonuses the winners could earn for record-setting runs. A massive R1.5 million has been put up for grabs to the first man and woman to break the current men’s and women’s “up-run” records respectively.
Current records
Both records belong to Russians, with Leonid Shvetsov’s 2008 winning time of 5:24:47 in 2008 holding the men’s record, while Elena Nurgalieva’s 2006 victory in a time of 6:09:24 stands as the female record. Shvetsov also holds the down record 5:20 with Frith van der Merwe still holding the women’s record 5:52
Special medals
Runners were rewarded with a special anniversary medal in 2015, it is the same size as the one used in 1988, the 150-year anniversary of Pietermaritzburg, and 2010, when the 85th running of Comrades took place.
Who qualifies?
Runners over the age of 20 can qualify when they are able to complete an official- ly recognised marathon (42.2 km) in under five hours.
Uphill battle
There are five mayor hills at Comrades. On the up run they appear in the follow- ing order: Cowies Hill, Field’s Hill, Botha’s Hill, Inchanga, and the infamous Polly Shortts.
Medals
There are seven medals. Gold medals: The first 10 men and women. Wally Hay- ward medals (silver-centred circled by gold ring): 11th position to sub 6:00 hours.
Silver medals: 6 hours to sub 7:30. Bill Rowan medals (bronze-centred circled by silver ring): 7:30 to sub 9 hours. Bronze medals: 9 hours to sub 11 hours. Vic Clapham medals (copper): 11 hours to sub 12 hours. Runners completing an up and down in consecutive years also qualifies for a back-to-back medal.
Medals history
From the early days prior to 2000 only gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded. The other medals were introduced as follows. Bill Rowan medal was in- troduced in 2000 (named after the winner of the first Comrades Marathon in 1921 as he won in 8:59). A new copper medal, the Vic Clapham medal (named after the race founder), was added in 2003. The Wally Hayward medal, named after five- time winner Wally Hayward, was added in 2007 for runners finishing in less than 6 hours.
