CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Kimberley, South Africa

Sol Plaatje University International Language

Conference

Servants of Africa – African Languages in the 21st Century

Theme:

TAAL PUO ULWIMI

(2)

Drawing on the legacy of the multilingual Solomon T. Plaatje and his various roles as teacher, interpreter, novelist, and language activist, the conference seeks to give a platform to all African languages. Plaatje, as inscribed on his tombstone, was seen as a “Servant of Africa”, therefore the aim of this conference is to broaden perspectives around African languages and investigate the roles they play, not only in South Africa and the African context, but also within the broader global context.

Please submit an abstract of 150-250 words to Dr Frederick Botha [email protected] by 9 June 2023.

Proposals should include the title of the paper, keywords, author’s name/s and title, affiliation/s, and a contact email address. Reference lists are not required.

Even though papers may focus on any African language, abstracts and presentations during the conference must be in one of the official languages of the Northern Cape where the University

is situated, i.e., Afrikaans, English, Setswana, and isiXhosa.

Abstracts and presentations in Afrikaans, Setswana, and isiXhosa should be accompanied by a translated summary in English. Interpreting services into English will be available for

presentations in Afrikaans, Setswana, and isiXhosa.

The conference is therefore structured around (but not limited to) the following themes regarding African languages:

• Language Activism

• Language Teaching and Learning

• Language and Indigenous Knowledge

• Language Conservation/Sustainability

• Language Policy and Planning

• Sign Language

• Marginalised Languages

• Linguistics

• Translation and Interpreting

• Creative Writing

• Literature
