PERFORMING AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT TOWARD STUDENTS’

READING SKILL IN EFL CLASSROOM: CHALLENGES IN INDONESIAN CONTEXT

Anggi Yusuf Mustofa

ABSTRACT

METHODOLOGY

When conducting library research, researchers make an effort to locate information about anything relevant to the topic at hand [12]. It includes theories, expert viewpoints and research that are pertinent to the problem under investigation.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

  • Authentic assessment for EFL learners in ELT context
  • Teaching reading in the Indonesian context
  • Authentic assessment of reading
  • Challenges in performing authentic assessment toward reading skill in the Indonesian context

An authentic assessment will also contain important activities, which will enable a full assessment of students' knowledge as well as their skills [20]. Because of this, it is expected that the implementation of authentic assessment will be able to alleviate some of the difficulties encountered by EFL students in Indonesia when they are in the process of acquiring English language skills.

THE USE OF PEER CORRECTIVE FEEDBACK IN IMPROVING ARGUMENTATIVE WRITING SKILL OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Sri Wahyuni

Preliminary Study

The first activity in the preliminary study was to make observations in the writing teaching and learning process. Therefore, the real problems in the teaching and learning process of writing could be seen in this step.

Planning the Action

  • Implementing the Action Plan
  • Observing
  • Reflecting
  • RESULT

It is intended to establish whether the indicators or criteria for success have been achieved or not. If the criteria for success have not yet been achieved, the researcher continues to the next cycle by revising the steps and repeating the implementation of peer-corrective feedback in the writing process.

1.Finding from the Preliminary Study

2.Finding from the Cycle

The teacher distributed their previous writing to their friends (the peer) and the peer correction guide to the students. Then the teacher distributed their past writing to their friends (the peer) and the peer correction guide to the students.

The Analysis on the Result of the Teaching and Learning Process

After finishing writing, the teacher asked the students to submit their writing to the teacher. The teacher has asked the students to understand their friends' correction and can ask them to explain the correction.

The Analysis on the Students’ Writing Product

DISCUSSION

This finding seems to support the theories that corrective feedback affects students' writing quality. They found that peer feedback in the form of comments had a positive effect on students' writing.

CONCLUSION

In the previous study, only two students (9% of all students) can achieve a good level of writing quality, and the average score of students' writing skill is only 62.5. The positive influence of peer correction on the quality of students' writing is also noted by Kwok (2008).

PLAGIARISM ISSUE IN ACADEMIC WRITING

While Bailey (Fatimah, 2018) stated that academic writing is an educational work that presents ideas in a formal setting. Prohibited Reference: Prohibited reference occurs when someone posts untrue data about the original source on their academic writing.

CONCEPT OF PARAPHRASE

Those methods are 1) understand the text thoroughly by reading it as much as you need, 2) find some difficult, or ambiguous, or rarely used words and then replace them with its synonym, 3) make a simple outline containing the primary and secondary ideas, and 4) arrange the idea using some new vocabulary and different grammatical structure. Not only mentioned the methods, Oshima and Hogue also gave the technique to complete those methods: a) replace some words with synonym, b) change the active sentence to passive when possible, and vice versa, and c) decide to write indirect quotation rather than direct quotation.

ENCOURAGING STUDENTS’ INITIATIVE THROUGH BRAINSTORMING TO PROMOTE STUDENTS’ LEARNING

MOTIVATION IN EFL CLASSROOM

Maya Angrayni 1 and Fazri Nur Yusuf 2

INTRODUCTION

Furthermore, a previous study concerned the implementation of brainstorming to improve student performance and motivation, which was conducted by Tsai et al (2020). As the previous studies showed that encouraging student initiative is beneficial in language learning, and brainstorming is believed to be a useful approach to promote student participation and motivation in the learning process.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Students’ Learning Motivation

The purpose of brainstorming is to lead people to new ways of thinking and to break conventional reasoning. Brainstorming is the automatic collection of notes on ideas in preparation for different stages of writing.

The Importance of Encouraging Students’ Initiative in EFL Classroom

Furthermore, according to MacDowell (1999), brainstorming is "the act of defining a question or ideas and preparing anything related to the topic." No matter how the idea seems. Therefore, this research will provide the result of the interview according to the themes that are combined in the data analysis, based on the steps that teachers take when using brainstorming, teachers' views on how brainstorming is useful to encourage student initiative, how brainstorming it helps students to promote their learning motivation along with the obstacles that teachers overcome when using the strategy in the EFL classroom.

FINDINGS

To explore teachers’ strategies in using brainstorming to encourage students’

For example, for example, I want to discuss a narrative text, so I first make a mind map from the narrative text. For example, as I want to teach narrative text, I will describe the narrative text in several parts, such as: the type of narrative text, its linguistic features or its generic structure.'

Brainstorming is beneficial to promote students’ learning motivation

It can be said that both participants followed almost the same method in implementing the brainstorming strategy, namely: by drawing the mind mapping on the whiteboard where the details of the subtopics were provided by the students. Second, by asking those students who need a definition or longer explanation of the details written in the brainstorm to independently write the definition or longer explanation they need on their notebooks.

CONCLUSION

This result supports the previous study conducted by Tsai et al (2020) who assumed that the rule and instruction of the brainstorming approach is simple, and students do not need much effort to learn the procedure of class activities; teachers only need to prepare the topics and lead group discussions, and do not need to spend a lot of time developing various learning activities. A brainstorming flipped classroom approach for improving student learning achievement, motivation, teacher-student interaction, and creativity in a civics education classroom.

Mufti Rasyid 1 , Fitriatul Masitoh 2

Code Switching in Layangan Putus Webseries

After watching, observing and documenting Layangan Putus Web Series Episode 1A and 1B, three types of code switching are found; inter-sentence, intra-sentence and tag switching. Intra-sentential is code-switching in which conversions between a clause or a sentence boundary take place (Girsang, 2015: 05).

Table 2. Inter Sentential Code Switching in Layangan Putus
Table 2. Inter Sentential Code Switching in Layangan Putus

Code Mixing in Layangan Putus Web series

Congruent lexicalization refers to the situation where two languages share a grammatical structure, which can lexically populate the structure with elements from their language. Congruent lexicalization is usually present mixing between dialects and between languages, which are close in structure (Riarda, 2017: 46).

Reasons Influencing Code Switching and Code Mixing in Layangan Putus Web Series

Miranda, who is the owner of a large multinational corporation, holds the title of "the most cheesy character" on the show. The director of the movie Layangan Putus deliberately inserts an element of English to build the identity of his characters.

STUDENTS’ LEARNING STRATEGIES LEVELS IN LEARNING EFL AT STATE ISLAMIC INSTITUTE OF KEDIRI, INDONESIA

Agus Edi Winarto

Students’ Learning Strategies Levels

The research results of the students' learning strategy levels are reported based on the learning strategies classification, memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective and social strategies. The Most and The Least of Students’ Learning Strategies Used

Although there are still two classes of intermediate learning strategies, the overall average score of students' learning strategies is 3.6 which means that the level of students' learning strategies is generally high. It can also be said that students generally or usually use about their own learning strategies in EFL learning.

Discussion

On the page are the learning strategies that are the least frequently used, affective and memory strategies (Wulandary:2018). Learning strategies are students' ways of learning to make learning easier and more effective to achieve successful outcomes.
