Research in the geographical area of the Southern Ocean, including the Prince Edward Islands, and/or in Antarctica. The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Research Plan (the Research Plan) is focused on an integrative systems approach to understanding the evolution of Earth's systems and ecosystems in the 21st century. The mandate of the National Research Foundation (NRF) is to support and promote research through funding, development of human resources and the provision of the necessary research facilities in order to create knowledge, and innovation and development in all fields of science and facilitate technology. , including indigenous knowledge and thereby contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of all the people of the Republic (NRF Act, 1998).

Through the grant management process, the strategic direction and outcomes of the funding instrument are the responsibility of the Knowledge Fields Development Directorate (KFD) within the NRF's Research and Innovations Support and Advancement (RISA) business unit on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) .

Key stakeholders

This amount includes research-related costs, approved winter staff salary costs and student stipends, but excludes fuel and other logistics-related costs to cover the use of the SA Agulhas II research vessel for dedicated cruises.

Information sources

All applications must be approved by the Research Office of the Principal Investigator prior to submission to the NRF. It is the responsibility of each applicant to familiarize themselves with the internal deadlines set by their institution in order to meet the NRF completion deadline.

Eligibility

Application screening

Proposals that do not require the submission of such data should still submit the completed attachments as Not Applicable, if deemed so.

Application assessment

Requests for written reviews will be requested electronically from colleagues located in remote locations from the NRF. The panels will include a wide range of specialists, selected on the basis of their relevant knowledge in the field and their research standing. NRF has invited international panel members in the past and may do so pending the eligibility and availability of such participants.

Panel members will discuss submitted written reviews and are expected to provide their own expert opinions.

Application ranking

It is in the applicant's interest to ensure that the selected reviewers are familiar with the submission and thus likely to respond to a review request. It is also in the applicant's best interest to ensure that the selected reviewers do not have a potential conflict of interest, as such reviews are rejected without consideration. In addition, the NRF will select appropriate reviewers from the NRF database and other regularly updated sources.

On average, the NRF achieves a response rate of 30% to requests for self-appointed or NRF-appointed peer reviews by post.

The money is released upon acceptance of the terms of the grant, both by the applicant and by his/her employing institution. These grants are awarded to a maximum of R30 000, depending on the nature of the research and the proximity of the student to the supervisor. The appointment of winter staff will be in accordance with the DEA pay scales attached to this call (DEA Levels 1-10 - TOTAL SALARY PACKAGE - 1 April 2016).

22. appointees will be scrutinized in the wider scope of the transformation of the demographic data of the SANAP program into the future. d) Operational costs related to research. As with the above, the feasibility of the overall project should be stated if the equipment is not allocated. Equipment placement and use of specialized tools will continue to be subject to existing DEA protocols.

The amount awarded under this may be used at the applicant's discretion. Upon receipt of the signed grant terms letter, the NRF will release the allocated amount for that year. They must be submitted before the end of March of the following year and are a prerequisite for the release of funds for the following year.

Additional funding support for disabled people may be allocated to people with disabilities as specified in the Code of Good Practice for the Employment of People with Disabilities as in the Employment Equity Act No. 55 of 1998. The broad terms of reference for the program review of the SANAP funding instrument will be determined by the KFD Directorate, before the evaluation takes place, and in accordance with the principles in the VE directorate's guidelines. The results of the evaluation will be used in accordance with the objectives set out in the terms of reference for the evaluation, as well as for the improvement and development of the financing instrument.

4 All applications scoring average (2) or less for feasibility and scientific merit will not be eligible for funding under the SANAP funding instrument. The application demonstrates evidence of exceptional performance in all stated criteria, as determined by the panel and in relation to the area of expertise under consideration. Above average performance on all criteria, as determined by the panel and in relation to the area of expertise under consideration.

The application shows an average performance according to all the listed criteria, as determined by the panel and according to the field of knowledge in question. 1 Below average Below average performance across all criteria as determined by the panel and by area of expertise 0. There are major deficiencies or deficiencies within and across the criteria listed, with particular emphasis on scholarly/scientific merit.

The scoring of each criterion for each application will be contextualized to accommodate variability in such things as knowledge fields, institutional capacity, etc. If a criterion does not apply to a specific application (eg plans for digital data storage; . collaborations; etc.), the weight of that specific criteria will be made equal to zero, and the overall score will be normalized.

The recruitment of members of the research expedition / scientific staff (eg field assistants) is the responsibility of the principal investigators at the universities or institutions. DEA is responsible for the recruitment of logistics expedition members / logistics support personnel (eg radio technicians, doctors). The appointment of members of the expedition must take into account the country's transformational imperatives.

Once the appointment of the expedition member has been approved, the principal investigators must indicate the date on which the expedition members will commence employment. Accommodation and travel for expedition members sent to other centers for project-related courses and/or training must be budgeted accordingly. Expedition members and principal investigators will be notified when expedition members are required to report for training in Cape Town prior to a trip.

Living and travel to enable returning expedition members to return to their centers/cities after an expedition should be budgeted for. Principal investigators will be informed of any clearances granted by the DEA to expedition members (eg during team training in Cape Town prior to departure) so that there is an accuracy. It must be ensured that members of the expedition are not granted more leave than they are entitled to at any given time during their employment.

Expedition members and relief (takeover) personnel are responsible for taking out their own insurance. DEA's medical and dental research costs related to members of research expeditions must be budgeted. Arranging medical and dental examinations for all members of the research and logistics expedition will be done by the DEA, but costs will have to be budgeted by the principal investigators.

ALL wintering expedition members should attend group training sessions in Pretoria and Cape Town (approximately 2 1/2 weeks in total) prior to the trip they are participating in (timeframes subject to change).
