Lentswe, Stilfontein - A memorial service for Jabulani Latha will take place at Khuma Commu- nity Hall at 13:00 on Thursday April 14.

He was stabbed on Thursday April 7 at about 20:00.

“The deceased was on his way from Stilfontein to Khuma with his friends when they were sudden- ly distracted and stopped by a vehicle that were following them at a 4 way stop.

“Three unknown men stepped out of the vehicle and stabbed the victim with a sharp instrument,”

said Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, police spokesper- son.“He tried to run away but was chased and they continued to stab him. He was rushed to Botsha- belo Clinic where he was declared dead on arrival.

The suspects are still at large.”

The police are investigating a case of murder.

The ANCYL said on social media that they are

mourning his passing after his brutal murder.

Jabulani was a youth organizer in the organisation.

He will always be remembered as an upright, principled, fearless comrade, devoted towards realization of the organisation tasks.

“The incidence of contact crimes has reached endemic levels. The scourge is simply too much to bear,” said ANCYL.

They extended their heartfelt condolence to the Latha family, members of the YL and Mass Demo- cratic Movement in general.

His funeral service will take place on Sunday April 17, also at the Khuma Community Hall. It will start at 07:00.

Anyone with information about his stabbing is requested to contact Stilfontein SAPS detectives on 018 484 7600/7652.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The busi- nessman who shot and killed Moham- ed Dangor will only be sentenced in May.

Sentencing proceedings against Con- fidence Sekgoro (39) were set to start this week but his defence team request- ed a postponement.

According to Henry Mamothame, NPA Regional Spokesperson, the de- fence asked more time for Sekgoro’s

probation officer to submit a report in preparation for sentencing.

State Adv Riekie Krause opposed this request and sentencing were only post- poned for 30 days, to May 11.

Sekgoro is awaiting sentencing in jail after he was found guilty of one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder on February 17 following the mass shooting at Speedy Car Sales in Klerksdorp in 2019.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A new pro- gramme that can be accessed online free of charge can help high school learners get back on track with their school work after two years of inter- ruptions.

It’s not too late for them to catch up and prepare themselves for better exam results. The joint programme of the Western Cape Education De- partment (WCED) and Stellenbosch University, called the Telematics Schools Project (TSP), is extending online learning support for learn- ers at Basic Education Department high schools in grades 10 to 12 countrywide, with content presented in English and Afrikaans. It’s free to register and, what’s more, requires no data.

To access course work in 18 sub- jects, from languages (English, Af- rikaans and isiXhosa) to Mathemat- ics, Physical Sciences, Accounting, History, Geography and more, all learners need to do is register with the zero-rated Telematics Schools Project website. Just a personal email address is required.

Once registered, learners will have instant access to live-streamed online teaching or, if more convenient, to recorded versions of the lessons, which they can work though in their own time and at their own pace.

They can return to lessons as often as they need until they feel they are sufficiently familiar with the work.

They have access to all the lesson videos, workbooks, revision pro- grammes and course content sum- maries, including other materials such as infographics, as well as prac- tice exam papers to help them make up for all the teaching and learning time lost since 2020.

Content is quality assured by WCED senior curriculum planners.

The system is open to all grade 10

to 12 high school goers across the country.

Online access is also available via Facebook, but then users need their own data.

Many high schools across the country have already signed up with the project, but in these cases content is viewed by the whole class at once, explains Zainab Suliman of Stellenbosch University’s Centre for Learning Technologies. She is the deputy director of the centre’s operations, telematics services and projects, and manages the TSP.

Dr Glynis Schreuder, chief educa- tion specialist: Curriculum FET (Fur- ther Education and Training) and project manager of the TSP encour- ages learners to register individually to benefit further. “Even if they are participating at school, if they reg- ister individually they can return to work covered in their own time and engage with the recorded broadcasts as often as they need to.”

She adds that, in addition to the broadcasts of lessons covering spe- cific topics, quarterly revision pro- grammes are also provided. “The revision programme summarises each term’s work to help learners further familiarise themselves with the syllabus. We understand the many life pressures learners face. We want them to be able to integrate the use of this condensed content into their daily realities as effectively as possible.”

The TSP also gives registered us- ers access to life skills workshops and videos, along with information on presentation skills, work readiness, preparing for job interviews, how to write a curriculum vitae, and even how to enhance personal mental health.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Eskom announced an extension of Stage 2 loadshedding that will last until Friday April 15 at 05:00.

The extension of loadshedding is caused by the failure of additional units and the continued shortage of generation capacity due to delays in returning to service three generating units at Camden Power Station and two generating units at Tutuka Power Station.

A generation unit each at Medupi, Matla, Kendal and Komati power stations failed on Tuesday evening while 240MW of power imports from Mozambique was interrupted, exacerbating the supply constraints.

Three generation units were returned to service at Matla, Grootvlei and Camden power stations.

“We currently have 5 379MW on planned maintenance, while another 14 827MW of capacity is unavailable due to unplanned breakdowns.

“The extension of the loadshedding is re- quired to preserve the remaining emergency generation reserves in an attempt to limit the stage of loadshedding.

“Eskom would like to inform the public that any further deterioration in generation capacity may require further loadshedding,’’ a statement from Eskom reads.

Eskom apologised for the implementation of loadshedding and would like to reiterate that loadshedding is implemented only as a last resort in order to protect the national grid.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Depart- ment of Water and Sanitation would like to caution people of faith to steer clear of water bodies during the coming Easter weekend.

During Easter holidays, people of different faiths traditionally go to rivers to perform their religious activities such as baptism amongst others. This prac- tice has proven dangerous in most cases as the Department has been alerted of incidences of drownings in the past.

According to Departmental Spokes- person, Sputnik Ratau, the recent downpours in some parts of the coun- try will make it even more dangerous to conduct such religious practices as water levels in certain rivers have in- creased sharply.

“While we respect people’s religious

beliefs, it is equally our responsibility as government to alert everyone about the danger associated with baptism in ra- ging rivers, particularly during this pe- riod. Being religious should not lead to deaths of innocent people. The safety of everyone is our priority, therefore, we encourage everyone to find alternative ways of baptism to ensure safety,” he said.

In addition, Ratau said the current rainfall in many parts of South Africa is expected to continue and water levels in rivers and dams are equally expected to raise sharply.

He further explained that dams and rivers have undercurrents, and it is dan- gerous to step into water when one does not know the depth of the water.

“Both these unknowns are very dangerous and can cause fatal injuries, coupled with the fact that there are floating objects that cannot be seen,” Ratau em- phasised.

As holidaymakers will be flock- ing to different directions to take a break from economic activities, Ratau pleaded with them to en- joy with responsibility and avoid visiting the Department’s dams under the influence of alcohol.

The Department will conti- nue to monitor all its dams and release water where necessary to relieve pressure off the dams, thus ensuring safety of those li- ving downstream.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - As families plan their vacations, staycations and pil- grimages for the Easter weekend, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is bracing itself to deal with low blood collections at this busy time of the year.

“The Easter long weekend and many public holidays in April are synonymous with low collections when schools and universities close for a break and masses of people go on holiday and thus im- pacting blood donations from donors,”

says Thandi Mosupye, SANBS Senior Manager: Marketing, Brand and Com- munication.

“We have, unfortunately, struggled to reach the minimum required levels of blood stocks for several months despite the great support from regular blood donors.”

SANBS appeals to current and first- time blood donors to make their way to their closest donation site to give much- needed blood.

“Even during holidays, we are re-

Remember to give blood this Easter

quired to collect blood and maintain adequate stocks. Our target is at least 3 500 units of blood daily to satisfactorily meet patients’ daily needs.

For every day that we are unable to achieve this target, our available stock level keeps depleting,” Mosupye added.

As people consider tak- ing a holiday or celebrating religious days, SANBS urges everyone to spare 30 minutes

of their time to make a huge difference to those in need of blood. Easter is often a time for family and donating blood is a great way of giving someone else more time with theirs.

If you are in good health and between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh more than 50kg, and lead a sexually safe lifestyle, make your way to your nearest donation site.

Inmates may be

visited

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - The Depart- ment of Correctional Services has reinstated visitations of inmates at cor- rectional centres, following the termina- tion of the National State of Disaster by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

According to Sechaba Mphahlele, spokesperson, they reviewed their COV- ID-19 risk adjusted strategy following the announcement by the president and will now permit visits for inmates.

“All relevant COVID-19 mandatory protocols and regulations will still be adhered to during the visitations. We remain committed to prioritise the health of both officials and inmates.

“To date, we have a total of nine COVID-19 active cases (seven inmates and two officials), cumulative cases stand at 21 825 (12 043 officials and 9 782 inmates).

“The cumulative recoveries to date stand at 21 459 (11 798 for officials and 9 661 for inmates) translating to a re- covery rate of 98,32%,” he said.

The total number of fatalities remain at 357 (242 for officials and 115 for inmates). A total of 23 220 officials and 111 972 inmates have been vaccinated.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Rotary Klerksdorp joined hands with an NPO to collaborate with community projects.

FEED South Africa NPC and Rotary Club Klerksdorp said the focus of these joint projects is to start school and crèche feeding schemes based on locally produced vitality por- ridge. They will also provide training in informal settle-

ments and rural areas for peo- ple to start their own gardens.

Both parties pursue the same goals-– fighting malnu- trition at children’s age, social upliftment and education of youth and women, sustainable socio-economic development and creation of jobs.

FEED (Food, Education, Energy & Development) is a Potch-based NPO. FEED

started its first sustainable de- velopment projects in 2020 in cooperation with SUNfarming South Africa who are pioneers in agri-photovoltaic systems.

People in need are trained to grow vegetables and medicinal herbs.

The herbs are then blended into locally produced pre- cooked porridge in order to enrich it with vitamins, miner-

als and proteins which would help to protect the health of children and to offer them a healthy school meal.

More than 15 000 children and their families already ben- efit from these healthy school meals while more than 1 000 local people were trained in sustainable agriculture and started new gardens either at home or in schools and church

gardens.

“Our goals regarding the sustainable empowerment of communities and the fight against malnutrition in order to support children from their early age in school and in boosting their immune systems in order to stay healthy and have a successful school career match perfectly,” Edith Bra- sche says..

Rotary Club and FEED signed a MOU. Present were Len Moll, President Klerksdorp Rotary Club, Hans Jurie Moolman, Melanie Moolman, Edith

Brasche, all FEED, and Allison de Lange and Carmelo Graceffa, Rotary Club. These containers will be turned into internet cafes in Khuma and Kanana.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - Transport minister Fikile Mbalula has announced an- other extension to the dri- ver’s licence renewal dead- line, adding that it would be the final opportunity for those with expired licences to submit their applications.

Affected motorists now have until May 5 to submit their renewal applications - an additional 20 days over the previous extension to April 15.

“The final opportunity is provided by the current regulations, which extends the grace period by 30 days from [the] date of the end of the state of disaster,”

Mbalula said.

He added that he would be unable to extend the grace period further with the state of disaster lifted.

“We continue to urge those whose driving li- cence cards expired be- tween March 26 2020 and August 31 2021 to renew their licence.

“The end of the state of disaster means we can no longer issue directions that extend further the grace period,” he said.

All driver’s licence cards, temporary licences, pro- fessional driving permits, and learner’s licences that expired between 26 March 2020 and 31 August 2021 would be deemed valid.

Lentswe, Vryburg - In a quest to speed up the agricultural services to the com- munities of North West and revitalise operations within the Department, MEC Desbo Mohono of Agriculture and Rural Development has been meeting with the workforce of the department in the four districts of the province.

The aim of the drive was to find better ways of providing services, to encourage a new revitalized approach to agriculture and to inculcate a culture of excellent service delivery and profes- sionalism when working with service recipients.

The staff that the MEC has been meeting include specialists from the de- partment to the general administration staff from various units of the depart- ment.

Speaking in a meeting held in Vry- burg on Thursday April 7, Mohono re- minded officials in this district that they are all important and that the people are relying on them for services.

Addressing the extension services and veterinary staff, she said extension officers must always remember that they are at the forefront of service delivery and are the face of the sector to clients and the general public.

‘You are the coalface platform for the

department’s interaction, liaison and support to farmers and communities.

We therefore expect you to work closely with farmers and communities,” she emphasized.

To the veterinary services staff of the Department, MEC Mohono had this to say, “I appreciate the work that you are doing, however I wish to remind you that your primary responsibility is not only to ensure that we are safe from the disease, but to also educate our farming communities about

the importance of animal health which does not only contribute to improved health of the animals but also to improved food security of the province.

“Be our ambas- sadors on the ground. You are the most critical component of agriculture. Farm- ers and communi- ties will only gain comfort if you continue to sup-

port them,” the MEC expressed.

In her stopovers in various districts, MEC Mohono was emphasizing that she wants to see action and results from every unit.

“We are a team and therefore we need to work as one. This silo mentality that I am seeing, will not take us any- where. The people that we are serving want nothing but services. If we have differences, let us put them aside and put the needs of people we are serving

before everything,” MEC Mohono said.

The staff in general welcomed her gesture of taking time out of her busy schedule to meet with them.

MEC Mohono has emphasized that her engagements with departmental officials is not going to be a once-off arrangement but will be continued. She said she will meet with them again after six months to monitor implementation of departmental plans and progress thereof.

The hand over took place in Klerksdorp Civic Centre on Friday April 8.

The initiative is regarded as the key engine in reducing the unemployment rate and generating economic growth within the district.

Better sight... Hata Butle School in Khuma, Stilfontein received spectacles, made possible by Department of Basic Education in Potchefstroom. The principal, Wilson Ntlhaeng, and Vuiswa Daile can be seen with learners who received spectacles.

Lentswe, Sun City - Was the Tropika Is- land of Treasure host’s big win at celeb city a string of good luck, or just pure old brilliance?

That is the question on all our minds when it comes to Anga Makubalo and his recent streak of good fortune. The newly crowned Tropika Island of Treas- ure host, Anga “NaakMusiQ” Makubalo took home another crown on Saturday April 9 at the much-anticipated #Ce- lebCity boxing match after beating rapper Cassper Nyovest in five-round man brawl held at Sun City on Saturday night an hour before midnight.

Cassper was the clear favourite going into the match with high profile celebs like Black Coffee and Big Zulu speak- ing out publicly in support of Nyovest.

After five exhausting rounds, Naak- MusiQ was able to win over the judge’s favour and was crowned the winner by unanimous decision. Both fighters took the decision with dignity, with Cassper hinting at a rematch during post fight interviews.

“There’s very little to remember from being in the ring, I was tired and Cas-

sper was punching. All I knew was don’t fall,” Anga told reporters after the fight.

This isn’t the first crown Anga took from a celeb this week though… Twitter and the media were quick to prema- turely congratulate Katlego Maboe for finding his way back to our screens as Host of Tropika Island

of Treasure: All Stars, because of a social media guessing-game, challenging viewers to quess who the host would be based off a cryptic riddle. It was, however, Anga Makubalo who was crowned as the up- coming 10th season’s true host. The Tropika Island of treasure started off in 2008 with its first selection of celebs being Kelly Khumalo and Roxy

Louw with a mix of players competing on an exotic island to stand a chance to win a cash prize of R1Million in cash.

Lentswe, Klerksdorp - A brand new, temporary exhibition opens in Klerks- dorp’s Matlosana Mall, comprising several photographers from the area.

The Migration Art Photography Ex- hibition is a mobile photo-exhibition of local photographers that will launch on Friday April 15 at Matlosana Mall and will be viewed over the Easter Weekend.

The showcase will continue at Klerks- dorp Museum from April 23 to May 14.

It’s the first of its kind showing in a public space at Matlosana Mall. The theme for this year’s exhibition is ‘Peo- ple and Spaces’ which seeks to create a dialogue about how people relate

with spaces; either inherent or through migration caused by political, economic or social status.

Selwane Evodia Melamu, a profes- sional photographer with over 10 years’ experience, is hosting her debut exhibition in collaboration with col- leagues from all over South Africa.

Photographers who contributed to the show are amongst others Salomé Kotzé, Editor and photographer at Klerksdorp Record, and artist and photographer, Tertius SO. There is a long list of aspir- ing photographers who will be showcas- ing alongside them.

The exhibition will be seen at the main entrance to Matlosana Mall. The pho- tographs will also be on sale.

New island host scores win

The first few seasons initially had a generic host; however, the show was reformatted for season 6,7,8 and 9 to include a celebrity host. Locations included the white sanded Seychelles, Maldives and Curacao embellished with a start studded line up of celebrities like

Emtee, Minnie Dlamini, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Melinda Bam and Nay Maps to name a few. After nine successful seasons, it has been proven that there is nothing smoother than the taste of Tropika Island of Treasure and that is why the show is back for its 10th season.

The games do not stop and sticking to the subject of celebrity sports people, among the nine re- turning all-stars viewers can expect to see rugby player-turned Afri- kaans musician, Brendan Peyper and model/surfer Roxy Louw grac- ing our screens as contestants.

Loyal fans of the show and new admirers are called to enter pro- motional competition leading up to the show to win their share of amazing prizes.
