ABSTRACT

The Characteristics of Attacus atlas Filament Silk at Various Cocoon Age Fajar, Y., A. M. Fuah and H. C. H. Siregar

Attacus atlas wild silk has been known as the commodity with a variety of economic usefulness, such as in the textile industry, crafts, medical devices, cosmetics, electronics production, and so on. Due to the nature of this multifunction, silk quality became very important. The quality of the silk depends on the characteristics of the cocoon skin and filament. It is important to know the maximum cocoon age that does not change cocoon filaments quality. The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of the cocoon age on silk filament characteristics. As many as 12 cocoonswere divided into four age groups (30, 45, 60, and 75 days). The cocoons were degummed using Kato's method(2000).The results showed that the age of 45 and 60 days were the best cocoon age to yield qualified silk filament. The observed silk filament characteristics were cocoon skin weights (0.8 ± 0.2 g), the total length of the filament (798.47 ± 189.99 m), the weight of the filaments (0.4 ± 0.14 g), the percentage of the filaments (50.05±11.06%), the thickness of the filament (4.49 ± 0.84 d), and the length of each filament (2.69 ± 0.91 m). It can be concluded that the characteristics of filament hang on to good quality does not exceed 60 days cocoon age.
