This study analyzes the optimization carried out by language administrators in optimizing the English language program at the Ittihadul Ummah Islamic Boarding School Jarakan. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. In optimizing the English language program itself, it is carried out with strategies that are considered efficient to be used in the application of learning English.

Based on the results of data obtained from interviews with language administrators related to the formulation of the first problem, namely what strategy is used in optimizing the English language program at the Ittihadul Ummah Islamic Boarding School, Jarakan, Ponorogo. Among the interviews conducted by the researcher.

The language administrator named imroatus shalihah stated that:

Based on his narrative, the strategy used in the English learning program for students is a drill. Drills in this program are carried out twice, namely at night before going to bed and in the afternoon on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, ys, and Thursdays in the afternoon after 4 pm. Because there are two language programs at Pondok Ittihadul Ummah, namely English and Arabic, which are carried out alternately once a week. So the drill is carried out according to the schedule of the language. And this program also applies a class division into 2, namely beginner and intermediate 1 2 3. This class division is adjusted to the abilities possessed by students 98

Meanwhile, Keysa as the head leader of the board of the Ittihadul Ummah Islamic Boarding School said:

There are two language programs at this boarding, namely Arabic and English. Both languages are scheduled for one week in English and one week later in Arabic. For the implementation, the technique uses a drilling strategy. In drilling, the speaker usually gives new vocab material 3-5 random words. It can be from a verb, an adjective, or something else 99

Meanwhile, Rizqi Martania said that:

Strategies in optimizing language programs using a drill. But in addition to the drills, the administrators also apply penalties for students who violate the use of Javanese or Indonesian as well as Arabic. If the current schedule uses English, students must use the language according to the schedule. For self-administered punishments such as the use of a rainbow hijab which is very badly designed, students who wear it will feel ashamed so that students will avoid violations that can embarrass them. In addition, students will also be required to have a language test which is usually carried out after the madrasah diniyah exam 100

The researcher then conducted interviews with the students, Anista ade ayu winata who said that

In learning English using drilling to increase vocabulary. The drill is done at night before going to bed at around 10 pm. Night drills are held every night except Friday nights and Saturday nights. And for the afternoon that is on Tuesday to Thursday.101

Irfa Fatimah also said;

Learning English at the boarding is carried out in the afternoon and at night. Usually known as “language drilling”, students are asked to memorize 3-5 new vocabulary words. The vocabulary used is vocabulary related to daily activities. For example, bathing, eating, sleeping, "who after you?" let’s join to eat, and sentences that are generally used to communicate every day, which is still light and easy to remember and use to communicate with the other person.

Language drilling that is applied by the language administrator is an activity that must be followed because if it is not followed, the language administrator will give an embarrassing punishment.

Language administrators usually give 3-5 new vocabs that must be memorized and then there is additional material such as an explanation of how to make sentences from these new vocabs.103 From the informants' statements, it can be concluded that the English program at Pondok Ittihadul Ummah is carried out using the drilling technique, which is carried out based on the language schedule. Language drills are conducted in the afternoon and evening. At night it is carried out every night except Friday, Saturday, and Saturday nights, which is at 10:00 pm. From the facts in the field, it can be concluded that the strategy used is the drilling strategy. Drilling is carried out twice a day according to the weekly language schedule, namely in the afternoon and evening. The content of the drill itself is by giving new vocab about 3-5 words.

The observations of the researcher while in the field found the fact that the strategy used in the English language program was a drilling strategy, in which drilling is divided into 2 times, namely at night and in the afternoon. but in practice the language administrators made innovations in the teaching process such as arranging sentences, completing empty sentences, listening to music, and memorizing 3-5 words each time. day.

Even the language administrators also impose penalties for language violators, namely by wearing a rainbow hijab for several days.104

Language drilling is carried out at night by the administrators, namely by giving new vocabs which are pronounced loudly and clearly which are then repeated by the students. The speaker will repeat the pronunciation until the students can remember the words spoken. Drilling at night is carried out by the room lady who is still under the supervision of the language administrator. 105 The drilling is carried out from 09:25 to 10:00, so it only has a fairly short time.

The language drilling was carried out in the afternoon which was divided into 2 classes, namely intermediate and beginner. 106 Submission of material carried out by the language administrator is almost the same as drilling at night, namely by giving new vocab. The difference from this drilling is that after giving a new vocab, students are then asked to make a sentence based on the new vocab that has just been memorized. Then students are asked to write down the sentences that have been made on the blackboard to be corrected together.

The language administrator also made other innovations such as preparing a paper containing song lyrics. However, some of the lyrics were omitted and while playing the song, the students were asked to listen and then find out what lyrics were omitted and write them in the blanks. Then the results will be corrected together. 107 To overcome boredom in learning, students are then invited to sing songs together.

Drilling conducted in the afternoon has quite a lot of different times from drilling carried out at night, so language administrators must have innovations in teaching or delivering material after language drilling, such as making small groups which are then given pieces of paper that contain a word, then the group is asked to quickly assemble into a sentence. 108 The fastest one is considered the winner.

Programmed English is then applied as a communication language program that must be used to communicate in santri activities while in the female dormitory. Vocab given to students is vocab related to student activities at the boarding school, such as how to use language to queue and report sick friends. 109 The application of English is carried out by the language administrator so that students can practice the new language they find in daily activities that are by the language schedule.
