The Centre for Groundwater Studies 1s a cooperative research and education venture focussed on processes affecbng recharge, discharge, contanunatJ.on and remediation of groundwater It addresses ma1or land and water resource issues with the mter disc1phnary research experbse of 60 staff and 20 postgraduate students The centre provides opportunity for collaborators to have a ma1or input to the planning management and evaluabon of research outcomes
The Centre for Groundwater Studies was established m Adelaide m 1987 and expanded to Perth m 1995
It 1s now a 101nt venture of ten organ1sat1ons CSIRO Dtv1s1on of Water Resources Flinders Un1vers1ty of South Australia Mines & Energy South Australia, Department of EnVll'onment and Natural Resources South Australia, Primary Industnes, South Australta, Un1vers1ty of Western Australia, Water Authonty of Western Australia, Geological Survey of Western Australia M1n1stry for Planning Western Australia and United Water through Compagrue Generate des Eaux

Research
The research of the centre follows six themes 1 Sustainability of groundwater resources -
Mass spectrometry carbon 14 and CFC datmg fac1hb.es are used m rntegrated hydrochem1cal and hydrogeolog1cal research 1denllfymg recharge to groundwater systems and qnanbfymg rates of flow
2 Groundwater contamination and remedi- ation - Groundwater contam1nahon from industry ts a common problem in many countries The centre has developed new techniques to monitor organic chemicals tn groundwater (through the Cooperative Research Centre for Waste Management and Pollution Control) and quantify rates of 1ntnns1c degradation in situ
3 Agricultural and urban impacts on ground- water quality - Nitrate pollut1on has been studied usmg a range of new methods lead.mg to a better understanding of the processes and improved management pracbces
4 Water reclamation - The feas1b1hty of aqwfer storage and recovery has been studied for reuse of stormwater and treated wastewater The centre has developed techniques to enhance 1n1ecb.on rates protect groundwater quality and predict the impacts on aquifers and recovered water quahty
5 Surface water - groundwater interaction - CGS has developed field techniques and models to understand the 1nteracb.ons between groundwater and surface water bodies such as lakes wetlands and streams Ong1nal work on capture zone mapping provtdes a footing for land use management plans
6 Salinity management- Dryland sahn1sation 1s pnmanly a problem of excess groundwater Therefore the centre has developed techniques for quanttfy1ng groundwater recharge and discharge, and for detenmn1ng the impact of vegetation clearance on recharge New methods for measurement of evapo transpiration have been developed to support sahruty management m groundwater discharge areas
Education
The centre contams a strong postgraduate research program undertalong research 1n South Austraha mostly 1n earth sciences at Flinders Un1vers1ty Standards are high and demand for our post graduates ts strong. All have found employment tn thetr field, many with multiple offers before they have completed the1r theses Research pro1ects are normally part of larger research programs undertaken by the partners of the centre in concert Relevance to real environmental problems 1s gnaranteed
118
Fhnders Un1vers1ty and CGS are also members of the Joint Un1vers1hes Master Program m Hydrology and Water Resources The UNESCO accredited coursework plus pro1ect 12 months masters degree (MSc or MEngSc1) draws on the combmed resources of the three un1vers1t1es and attracts a number of 1ntematlonal students A three month Graduate Certificate and an eight month Graduate Diploma are articulated witlun the masters program The centre also conducts national short courses and workshops for profess1onal 10 seMce tratrung rn all aspects of groundwater studies
