One of the pnnc1pal actJ.VItJ.es of the Institute for the Study of Learning D1fficulbes 1s to engage in research to understand the nature of learrung and reduce the 1nc1dence of learmng dtfficulhes ISLD aims to amehorate the condtb.ons that do occur and d1ssem1nate information about learning parbcularly for people with special needs

Institute staff 1s kept to the m1n1mum with a Director, Adm1n1strator and small secretariat workmg 111 conJWlCbon with staff 111 departments of Education, Health and Welfare Add1bonal staff may be employed followmg the fmancmg of parttcular proiects

ISLD s income denves from a SA State Govern ment annual grant and from seIVIces for profes s1onal development and grants related to special projects and research

Research undertaken by ISLD covers areas such as

o Innovative teaching and training

Studies of more effective ways of teaching people with learning d1ff1culhes broadly defined

Technology and computers as aids to learning

Research and development to facilitate effective use of computers as ruds to leanung m schools and homes

ISLD beheves 1n the role of action research as the best means of obta1n1ng practical value from research finchngs

Action research 1s considered to be an applied research method which mvolves those affected by the procedures 111 question This helps to maximise the va~chty of the procedures and the outcomes of the research

The distinct feature of ISLD s acb.on research 1s that 1t 1s collaboraltve m that those affected by

planned changes have the prtmary responszbzlity for deciding on courses of action, and for

evaluating results of strategies tried out zn

practice

While notadoptmgacbon research enbrely, ISLD s acbvity focuses on, and talces account of, learning d1ff1culhes 1n applied settings such as the classroom school, home and the workplace This research may involve teachers, guidance officers, parents and other relevant professionals because they have the respons1b1hty for any dec1s1ons for change that may follow from the research
