BAR PRACTICE CENTRE

The Bar Practice Centre located at the Kedron Park campus was established in 198 It is a joint venture between the Bar Association of Queensland and the College with the administrative structure of the School of Business. It is subject to a Manageme Committee consisting of three members appointed by the Bar Association, three mer bers appointed by the College and a Chief Executive Officer, designated the Warde who is a member of both the Bar Association and the academic staff of the School Business.

he objectives of the Centre are -

to develop and enhance the practice skills of candidates for admission to the Bar of the Supreme Court of Queensland;

to act as a focus for the continuing education of Barristers in the Supreme Court of Queensland;

to concern itself with training and standards directed towards the achievement of the highest possible levels of competence and professional integrity in the mem- bers of the Bar of the Supreme Court of Queensland.

ectures and practice presentations are substantially effected by members of the 1diciary, the magistracy and the senior bar and are directed towards practice and ap- lications. All students have qualified in the knowledge subjects of the law.

he primary activity of the Centre is a 15 weeks course consisting of 90 hours, present- d on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6 - 9pm throughout a semester to stu- ents (readers) who have qualified in law from universities, colleges of advanced ducation or the Bar Board, and who wish to practice as Barristers.

he courtroom at Kedron Park, which is a reconstruction of the old Industrial Court in ie State Buildings adjoining Anzac Square, is a valuable resource for the work and aining of the Centre.

IUSINESS RESEARCH CENTRE

he Business Research Centre was established in 1977 at the Kedron Park campus, nd is associated with the School of Business.

s objectives are -

to undertake applied business research of benefit to the community, either on the initiative of the Centre or on a contractual or other externally funded basis;

to sponsor periodic conferences, seminars and short courses in appropriate topics and areas, sometimes in conjunction with other organisations;

to provide facilities for visiting scholars.

tesearch projects currently being undertaken or recently completed include:

pricing, cost and economic performance aspects of domestic satellite systems;

analyses of Queensland hospital costs and efficiency;

alternative schemes for distributing income and capital transfers to natural dis- aster victims;

the impact of tariff and non-tariff barriers in Australia;

penetration analysis of the Commonwealth Employment Bureau's services;

investigation of the assembly, packaging and transport cost efficiency for Aus- tralian raw wool, with special emphasis on the adoption of new packaging tech- nology and marketing methods;

a comparison of forecasting techniques: Industry examples;

a compilation of business history case studies for selected Queensland regions:

Charters Towers Gold Fields 1872-1913;

forecasting of Queensland housing commencements.

CENTRE FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT STUDIES

The Centre for Human Development Studies, located in the Psychology/Special Edi cation building at the Mount Gravatt campus, was established in 1979 to co-ordina and advance its research, clinical and dissemination activities in the areas of norm and exceptional human development. Research programs in both 'applied' and 'pur1 areas are being conducted by members of the Centre; clinics in language and readin1 motor and behaviour problems are mounted, and regular seminars, workshops and co sultations for teachers and other professionals in education, as well as academic sta are organised under the auspices of the Centre. The only full-time staff member of

Centre is its Director. All other appointments are by secondment or on a limited tenu1 basis from members of the College staff and outside agencies. The Centre is current engaged in a number of joint projects with the Queensland Education Department,

Australian Department of Social Security, the Schonell Educational Research Centi and the Department of Psychology of the University of Queensland.

Research at the Centre: Research at the Centre is currently being undertaken in

following areas:

Child Development -

Visual and auditory perception in normal and handicapped infants;

Mother-child interaction and language development in normal and handicapped (esp cially hearing-impaired) infants.

Special Education and Welfare -

Reading skills of capable and handicapped learners;

Curriculum and methods development for children with learning problems in regul schools;

Values development and education for intellectually handicapped children;

Techniques for intervention with pre-school-age hearing-impaired children;

Language curriculum and methods development for hearing-impaired students;

Program development for severely intellectually and/or physically handicapped adult Principles of curriculum development for special education.

Adult Learning -

Characteristics of tertiary student learning styles;

Attitudes of women tertiary students;

Characteristics, experiences and attitudes of special education teachers.

At present, research projects are funded by the College, the Queensland Educatic Department, the Australian Research Grants Committee, Lions International, and ti Australian Department of Social Security.

Facilities at the Centre: As well as having its own equipment and facilities, the Cent has access to all facilities of the campus. These include:

• an HP3000 computer and associated hardware and soft-ware facilities;

• various purpose-built real-time microprocessors;

an audiological testing unit;

play/test rooms with one-way vision screens;

a television studio;

an audio-visual aids service;

a library with large book, serial and test holdings in normal and handicapped de- velopment, education and welfare;

on-line literature search capacity;

a language laboratory; and

the services of an electronics technician and computer consultants.

he Centre for Studies in Teaching is located in Rooms 8208 and 209 at the Kelvin rove campus. It was established in 1980 to develop experiential programs for instruc- )n in teaching skills incorporating recent research and new technology. The major 1rusts of its operation are -

to develop, implement, evaluate and promote Teaching Process and Teaching Practice related units;

to develop, implement, evaluate and promote teaching skill programs outside the ambit of accredited semester-based pre-service courses for instructors, teachers and administrators.

he Centre comprises the campus Co-ordinator of Teaching Practice, the Teaching rocess Co-ordinator, and a Secretary.

lternative Teaching Practice programs have been supported by the Centre. Third and

~cond year secondary students may undertake six weeks teaching practice in Auck- nd, New Zealand. A semester exchange program also functions with Lock Haven State ollege, Pennsylvania, USA.

ie Research and Learning Centre in Reading has its headquarters at the Mount Gravatt 1mpus and units on the Carseldine, Kelvin Grove and Mount Gravatt campuses.

esearch Centre - Headquarters: The Centre Headquarters, situated on Level 2 of 1e Main Teaching Building at Mount Gravatt campus serves to co-ordinate Reading entres on all campuses as described below.

>principal functions are in teaching and research. These involve the monitoring and 3velopment of literacy courses across the College, the encouragement or conduct of

·iginal research in literacy, and the general dissemination of information on literacy , the College and wider communities.

entre projects include further development of the Mount Gravatt Developmental Reading eries, and the evaluation of computer software in literacy.

entre staff provide consultancy services including workshops, research guidance, and gher- degree supervision. Staff include the Director, Co-ordinators of Projects and of ublications, and Co-ordinators of Campus Reading Centres.

Bartlett, MA DipPsych Old, PhD Arizona Reading Centre - Carseldine Campus: The Reading Centre at Carseldine campu has principal functions in co-ordinating, monitoring and developing the courses in lite acy offered there. In addition the Centre provides a consultancy service for student1 teachers and the community. Reading resources, currently housed in the Curriculu1 Centre, are available for teachers' and students' use.

Reading Centre - Kelvin Grove Campus: The Reading Centre, located in 'B' blocl at the Kelvin Grove campus, has principal functions in co-ordinating and teaching rea1 ing units offered on campus. The Centre also conducts a variety of in-service prograrr for teachers under the auspices of the Queensland Department of Education and th Queensland In-service Education Committee. Consultancy to schools, especially throug the Learning to Learn from Text Project, is provided by Centre staff.

Numerous groups, including the Queensland Writing Project and the Resource Teacher Sub-Branch of the Queensland Special Education Association, make use of the faci ties offered by the Centre, and from time to time, displays of student work are presen ed. Advisory services to staff, students, and the wider educational community, are als offered.

A workshop/seminar section houses a variety of curriculum materials to support the teacl ing of reading at all levels. This collection, while not available for borrowing, is access ble to students and teachers throughout the year.

Reading Centre - Mount Gravatt Campus: The Reading Centre, located on Lev 2 of the Main Teaching Building at the Mount Gravatt campus was opened in Nover ber, 1979. It serves two principal functions -

to co-ordinate the varied campus activities concerning aspects of reading, parti ularly to serve the needs of students within the various reading courses offered; ar to offer a teaching/consultative service to all campus students and teachers wt have an interest in aspects of reading, and also to the community at large.

A materials/study area provides easy access to papers on reading and language d velopment. This area is adjacent to an extensive stock of language/reading curriculu materials housed in the teaching area. The teaching area itself is designed to allow f1 large or small group sessions and ready access to whatever resource materials a1 needed.

With these facilities, and those available in the Headquarters of the Research and Lear ing Centre in Reading, the campus Centre is able to provide information, workshop f cilities, consultancy services and programs in particular areas of interest.
