Tasman District Council Community Development Committee Agenda – 13 February 2014
Agenda Page 70
3 Purpose of the Report
3.1 The Community Relations section within the Community Development Department is responsible for planning and delivering two functions – communications and community partnerships.
3.2 While the communications function remains largely unchanged the community partnership function was formed through the joining of the community recreation and environmental education functions previously managed within the community services and strategic development groups respectively.
3.3 This report is to inform the Committee of the activities that have been undertaken by the Community Relations section in the months since the since the last Community
Development Committee meeting and to provide an interim communications report in light of the deferred Communications Subcommittee meeting.
4 Community Partnerships
4.1 The newly formed Community Partnerships team manages events and initiatives formerly managed by the Community Recreation and Environmental Education teams. It also undertakes environmental education activities with schools. The holiday period is a relatively busy time for this team with a number of events supported and/or delivered.
4.2 For a summary of the events managed over the holiday period and the events still to come please refer to attachment one.
4.3 The Community Partnerships team, will be producing a strategy and work plan to ensure the envisaged benefits are realised.
4.4 Among the envisaged benefits is the need to ensure the relationships created in the former structure are utilised within the Council’s community engagement obligations.
5 Communications
5.1 The communications team remains unchanged within the Community Relations section.
Council’s external communications for the last two months have followed a ‘business as usual’ pattern consisting of what would be regarded as normal for this time of year. Volume has been normal to below normal with no major issues.
5.2 For an activity summary please refer to attachment two.
6 Conclusion
6.1 Once the reporting requirements for this Committee and the Communications Subcommittee are identified, the nature of this report may or may not change for the next meeting of both this Committee and the Communications Subcommittee.

Jazz in the Park
The Jazz festival had two community performances, Takaka’s Village Green and Richmond’s Washbourn Gardens. Both went well with the wet weather that dampened other festival performances skirting the Tasman events. Washbourn Gardens had a record crowd of 3,000 attending.
