Ancient History and Modern History
alternative sequence external assessment topics
Purpose
To notify schools about the external assessment topics for the alternative sequence course of study in Ancient History and Modern History in 2020 and 2021.
Background
In December 2016, the QCAA Board approved the development of alternative sequences for 19 subjects, including Ancient History and Modern History. See memo 090/16 ‘Senior syllabus redevelopment update’, 22 December 2016.
Alternative sequences for Ancient History and Modern History were made available to schools in August 2018 as one of a number of flexible delivery options for schools with small cohorts studying these subjects. Flexible delivery options are discussed in the Flexibility in senior secondary schooling report available from
www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/downloads/senior/report_flexibility_snr_schooling.pdf.
Subject matter for the alternative sequences in Ancient History and Modern History is organised into four units, each with a number of topics. The breadth of subject matter in the Modern History alternative sequence provides opportunities for teachers to select an aspect of the topic when developing units of work.
In an alternative sequence, students completing their summative studies in 2020 will study topics from Units 3 and 4. Students completing their summative studies in 2021 will study topics from Units 1 and 2. For the alternative sequences for Ancient History and Modern History, QCAA will notify schools of the external assessment topic at least 12 months in advance.
