Applications open for 2021 NAPLAN writing test markers

Purpose

To notify schools that the QCAA is now seeking applications from teachers to mark student responses to the National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) writing tests.

Background

Each year, the QCAA appoints registered teachers and retired teachers to mark student responses to the NAPLAN writing tests, drawing from the pool of re-applicant markers and recruiting new markers.

Successful applicants must mark student responses using a national rubric. They gain valuable professional experience and are paid for marking and training.

Information

The QCAA is seeking applications from practising and retired Queensland teachers for the following NAPLAN writing test marking roles:

• Marker

• Group leader

• Professional leader.

The 2021 NAPLAN marking operation begins on Wednesday 19 May and continues for approximately four weeks, or until all scripts have been marked.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only a limited number of markers will work together at a Brisbane- based venue. Most markers will work online at home. The move to online marking gives teachers across Queensland the opportunity to apply.

Application process

New applicants

To apply, new applicants must:

• hold a teacher registration number (or have previously held a teacher registration number, i.e. retired teachers) that is not suspended or deregistered

Minimum ICT requirements

All applicants are required to have good computer literacy and must meet the QCAA’s minimum ICT requirements on their home PCs or laptops. If COVID-19 restrictions prevent a face to face marking operation, markers must be willing and able to work from home.

• were successful in the 2020 recruitment process.

The QCAA does not pay applicants for attending a recruitment webinar and not all applicants will be offered a marking position.

Selection and training

The QCAA selects markers based on:

• satisfactory achievement in the marking of student compliance scripts following participation in a recruitment webinar

• maintaining a balance of new and experienced markers.

Marker training will include an online course designed by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority and a marker training webinar delivered in a day or evening session on Monday 17 May.

Benefit to teachers and schools

Teachers who mark gain a better understanding of the:

• tests, criteria and standards

• marking operation

• quality assurance processes for the NAPLAN writing task.

Completing the recruitment webinar, marker training and marking contributes to continuing professional development requirements for registration renewal. Markers are paid for training and marking.

How to apply

New applicants and re-applicants must apply via QCAA Marker Applications Online (MAO):

www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/MAO/login.jsp.

Applicants who are required to complete a 2021 recruitment webinar will be prompted to select their preferred recruitment webinar date and time as part of the application process.

Applicants interested in applying for the position of Group Leader or Professional Leader, must submit an application to be a marker through MAO (Marker Applications Online) before submitting an online application.

What you need to do

Please encourage your teaching staff to apply to become a 2021 NAPLAN marker.
