NAPLAN changes for 2023

Purpose

To advise schools about changes to NAPLAN from 2023.

Background

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is responsible for central management of NAPLAN tests. The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) coordinates the administration, marking and reporting of the tests in Queensland. The tests assess students in the areas of literacy (reading and writing) and numeracy.

NAPLAN has always been held in the second week of May for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Every third year, NAP sample assessments for Years 6 and 10 in Science, Civics and Citizenship, and Digital Literacy are held in October.

Education Ministers have agreed that from 2023 NAPLAN will be held in mid-March of Term 1, NAP sample assessments will move to Term 2 and that new ‘opt-in’ assessments will be made available.

Information

Changes to NAPLAN

From 2023, the following changes to NAPLAN will occur:

 NAPLAN testing will move to mid-March Term 1.

 In 2023, NAPLAN will be held from Wednesday 15 March to Monday 27 March.

 The existing three-yearly NAP sample assessments (which involve some students) in Years 6 and 10 in Science, Civics and Citizenship, and Digital Literacy will move to Term 2.

 Separate opt-in assessments in these same domains and year levels will also be available in Term 2 each year for any school. Science will be available in 2024, with Civics and Citizenship added in 2025 and Digital Literacy in 2026. Results will be available to participating schools to support teaching and learning but will not be reported publicly .

Moving the tests forward mean this data will be available earlier in the year to inform teaching and learning programs as well as giving parents/carers information about their child’s performance earlier in the year.

Administration

The QCAA is working on updating its implementation resources for the new NAPLAN timeframes.

A new 2023 NAPLAN page is available on the QCAA website. It will be updated as more information and resources are available to support schools.

What you need to do

 Ensure that all relevant staff are aware of the changes to NAPLAN from 2023.

 Consider the changed NAPLAN dates when planning your school calendar for 2023. School camps and excursions should not be booked during this new test window.

 Schools of Distance Education should ensure student musters at this time align with the official test schedule.
