ADVICE TO THOSE PREPARING TO ENTER THE MEDICAL COURSE

REGULATIONS

  • No candidate shall be admitted to the course for the degrees of bachelor of Medicine and bachelor of Surgery unless—

A candidate who fails to obtain one or more certificates will not be admitted to the examination of department IV without the permission of the Faculty of Medicine. In Division II, examinations are held at the end of the second year (hereinafter referred to as "the Sub-Division IIA Exam") and in the third year (hereinafter referred to as "the Division II Exam").

PAEDIATRICS

Students stay at the Royal Children's Hospital for two weeks in year five. In the examination in Obstetrics and Gynecology, a question about the care and diseases of the newborn child is included.

PSYCHIATRY

This is followed by clinical instruction in the wards and in the outpatient clinic, as well as lectures in pediatric medicine and surgery, delivered by members of the senior medical staff of the hospital and the Department of Child Health. Written Examination: A question from Paediatrics is included in the Medicine exam and one may be included in the Surgery exam.

Clinical teaching is provided by members of the clinical school at The Royal Women's Hospital. The course of lectures in medicine and surgery is given in the third clinical semester by members of the honorary medical corps.

ALFRED HOSPITAL Sraтн YEAR

Ryan Scholarship in Medicine (£100) is awarded on the basis of an examination conducted by the. Ryan Scholarship in Surgery (£100) is awarded on the basis of an examination conducted shortly after the final examination by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. iii) The Stirling Prize in Clinical Surgery (2.40) is awarded to the student in Division IV who submits the best essay on a selected surgical topic. iv) The Alison Howorth Prize (2.35) is awarded triennially to the student of the Royal Melbourne Hospital who submits the best essay on the Rheumatic Disorders or a related subject.

In the remaining eight weeks, clinical instruction is carried out by members of the Clinical School. Each patient in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is assigned to a student and the student keeps detailed notes.

1) FOR CANDIDATES PROCEEDING BY EXAMINATION PART I

PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

PATHOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY

MEDICINE

A candidate submitting work carried out in collaboration with other workers must make a statement as to the extent to which he was responsible for the initiation and prosecution of the work. The examination in clinical medicine for candidates proceeding to specialization may involve the examination of the candidate in any matter relating to the practice of clinical medicine.

DEGREE OF MASTER OF SURGERY

This review shall not be governed by section (v) thereof. v) must be in a form suitable for publication or have already been published in an approved form and. vi) must show work at least equal to that involved in the preparation for the examination in Medicine for the M.D. Degree. Examiners must take such steps as they think reasonable to assess the value of the candidate's contribution to the joint work and must be satisfied that the individual candidate has been responsible for making a substantial contribution to the theory or practice of medicine.

ANATOMY

This review need not be governed by section (v) hereof. v) must be in a suitable form for publication or already published in an approved form and. vi) must show work at least equal to that of preparation for the medical examination for the degree of doctor. A candidate who submits work that was done in collaboration with other employees is required to submit a statement showing the extent to which he was responsible for initiating and following up the work. Candidates are also expected to have read the most important articles in the various journals of Physiology and Medicine.

PATHOLOGY INCLUDING MICROBIOLOGY

2) FOR CANDIDATES PROCEEDING BY THESIS NATURE OF THESIS

Candidates are advised to register in the first instance with the Secretary, Medical Branch of the Registrar's Office. The exam may include questions relating to the anatomy of the female pelvis, mammary gland, abdomen, regions adjacent to it and the newborn child.

PHYSIOLOGY (INCLUDING PHARMACOLOGY) AND BIOCHEMISTRY

PAftT II

The examination will include General Pathology and a special knowledge of the pathology of diseases peculiar to women. Examination in Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology for thesis-proceeding candidates may include examination of the candidate on any matter relating to the practice of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology.

ANATOMY

Candidates are advised to register in the first instance with the Secretary, Medical Branch, of the Registrar's 00cc. Not less than twelve months' experience as Resident Medical Officer in The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, or its equivalent.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

The joint medical library of the Ophthalmological Association of Australia (A.M.A.) and the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital contains textbooks, reference books and journals. Inquiries about relevant study materials or library services can be sent to the Librarian, The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, East Melbourne, C.2.

PATHOLOGY (INCLUDING MICROBIOLOGY)

Evidence that he has completed all normal specialist procedures under the supervision of one or more Consultants in Ophthalmology. The exam will require candidates to know about:. a) general biological properties of microorganisms;

The exam tests the candidates' knowledge of pathology and of general and regional morbid anatomy and histology with particular reference to structural and functional variations that can be detected by radiodiagnostic methods. The practical exam will test candidates' ability to recognize and interpret specimens illustrating relevant morbid anatomy and histology.

DIPLOMA IN THERAPEUTIC RADIOLOGY ( Regulation 3.40)

PART II

Proof that you have performed all the usual procedures of the specialty under the supervision of one or more radiotherapy consultants. Candidates are advised to consult the chairperson of the program committee for advice on current customary procedures.

RADIOTHEØPY

Two years at a special hospital or clinic with not less than half-time attendance under the supervision of a senior practitioner or practitioners in Radiotherapy, or its equivalent. In the case of public hospitals or departments not so recognised, the Faculty of Medicine will require of a candidate particular particulars of his experience, the acceptance of which will enable the candidate to proceed with the Diploma.

DIPLOMA IN PSYCHOLOGICAL MEDICINE ( Regulation 3.40)

PHYSIOLOGY The examination may include questions relative to-

The study may include que stuns related to the physiology of (i) respiration, (ii) circulation, (iii) metabolism, (iv) excretion, (v) the nervous system.
