Foreword

Welcome to Liquid Light, the 1998 Dance Graduation season. The year seems to have passed quickly and with many highlights. QUT hosted the 4th Options Tertiary Dance Festival in June with more than 200 students from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa enjoying a week of performances, classes, workshops and lectures. A highlight of the week was the retum to Brisbane of two star graduates- Catherine Quinn and Deb Saxon- who performed Island to Island to great critical acclaim. The Graduate tour to the Philippines in July was a wonderful experience for all that made the trip. The students

performed works by Harold Collins and Natalie Weir and participated in a demonstration workshop.

Our graduates continue to reach new heights in the industry. Associate Degree graduate Tracey Carrodus, who this year performed the title role in the Sydney Dance Company's production of Salome was awarded the Faculty Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Graduate, and regularchoreographerforQUT, Natalie Weir, who has received critical acclaim all over Australia, was awarded a Creative Fellowship from the Australia Council.

Graduates from the double degree course (Bachelor of Arts (Dance )/Bachelor of Education) continue to be in high demand, with all being placed in full-time employment after graduation.

This year we also launched our new correspondence courses for dance teachers and appointed Jude Smith to the full-time faculty to coordinate this course. We have more than sixty people throughout Australia now participating in this course and we welcome every one of them to QUT.

I thank all the full-time staff for their dedication and work during the year. My thanks also to the many part- time staff, including our wonderful accompanists, who are a vital part of Dance at the Academy. Finally, my sincere thanks to the students who have shown great application and dedication to their studies. I wish them all the best for the future and hope that they will remain in touch with us in the years ahead.

Choreographer's Notes:

The first part of this work is based on my recollection of my first audition for English National Ballet (then the Festival Ballet Company) on the stage ofthe Sadlers Wells Theatre in Rosebury Avenue, London. The audition process is such a difficult part of a performing artistis existence perhaps a necessary evil that we are all subjected to. Parts two and three of the work were put together to show a positive outcome of the audition process. The whole ballet forms the third part of a trilogy about dance and dancers all of which were commis- sioned by QUT over a period of years.

Harold was one of the original dancers of the Queensland Ballet before joining The National Ballet of New Zealand where he was promoted to principal dancer in 1964. In 1968 he returned to the Queensland Ballet to dance Albrecht for Garth Welch's production of Giselle.

He then travelled overseas to dance throughout England, Europe, United States and Japan working with some of the best companies, teachers and choreographers including Sir Frederick Ashton, Rudi Can Dantzig, Sir Robert Helpman and Sir Kenneth McMillan. Harold also danced with the San Fran- cisco Ballet and the London Festival Ballet. During this period, he performed a large number of specially created roles and partnered many famous ballerinas including Dame Margot Fonteyn and Galina Samsova.

In 197 4, Harold returned to Brisbane taking up an invitation to become prin- cipal dancer with the Queensland Ballet. He was appointed the company's artistic director in 1978 and remained in this position for 19 years, creating many successful and popular works. In 1989 Harold was awarded an MBE for his services to dance and the community. Since leaving the Queensland Ballet, Harold has continued to work as a freelance artist and most recently has accepted a commissi<;m for a new work from The Houston Ballet II, USA

Natalie Weir

Natalie graduated from QUTwith an Associate Diploma in Dance in 1984 and has forged an impressive choreographic career having created more than 60 works to date. She began her professional career as a dancer with Expressions Dance Company and created her first professional work for them.

Natalie spent 1991 as choreographer -in-residence for the Queensland Ballet and continues her close association with the company regularly creating works for them since that time. Natalie has also choreographed works for Dance North, 2 Dance Plus, Western Australian Ballet, QUT Academy of the Arts, Victorian College of the Arts, Centre for the Performing Arts, sporting events and special events such as the Victory in the Pacific celebrations Flame for Freedom which was telecast on ABClV.

Last year Natalie recreated Jabula for The Dancers Company and has recently completed her first work, Dark Lullaby, for The Australian Ballet, which will be touring Australia next year. In 1998, Natalie was awarded a Creative Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts.
