1. MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD

In accordance with Section 25 (1) of the Hospital Management Boards Act, I submit the Board's Annual Report on its and the hospital's activities for the financial year ended 30th June 1991.

Vacant pending appointment The Director Management Services, Mr Trevor Webb, or delegate, is Secretary to the Board.

New Appointments and Resignations

Changes in the composition of the Board during the year are as follows:

Dr Stephen Meredith - resigned 9 January 1991 due to departure from Nhulunbuy.

Bernadus Van der Zon - appointment expired 28 August 1990, did not seek re-appointment.

Mr Rob Gelok, Mrs Denyse Simmons and Ms Lak Lak Yunupingu were appointed by the Minister for Health & Community Services on 27 February 1991 to fill vacancies on the Board.

2. BOARD MEETINGS

Board Meetings (Numbers 106 to 113) were held in accordance with Section 18 of the Act.

The September 1990 meeting did not take place due to a number of members being absent from Nhulunbuy and a Quorum was not

available.

The December 1990 and the January and February 1991 meetings did not take place due to a lack of Quorum pending appointment of new members.

During the year ended 30 June 1991, the Board dealt with the following items of business:

Closure of Nhulunbuy Aboriginal Hostel Nursing Summer School Meeting in Nhulunbuy QUARTERLY INSPECTIONS OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX

When the Board has its full complement the following areas are allocated to each individual member for separate

inspection.

1) Hospital Wards/Operating Theatres & CSD 2) Casualty/Out-patients Building

3) Stores/Maintenance

4) Laundry/Domestic Area/Catering

5) Staff Accommodation/Staff Facilities/Grounds

Mr Djerrkura inspected the Staff Accommodation and Staff Facilities on 20 August 1990.

YEARLY INSPECTION OF THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX IN THE PRESENCE OF THE DEPARTMENTAL HEAD

In accordance with Section 24 (3) of the Act, the Board accompanied by Mr Ray Norman, the Secretary for Health &

Community Services inspected the Hospital complex on 25 July 1990.

6. HOSPITAL STAFFING

(a) MEDICAL STAFF

Dr M King resigned as Director of Medical Services in December 1990. Dr I Ping acted in this position until appointment of Dr G Schreuder in February 1991.

Dr P Martin resigned in mid December 1990 and Dr W Frielingsdorf commenced in June 1991.

Doctors J Ferris and A Cohen continued as Medical Officers during the year.

The Board noted the difficulty the Department has in recruiting suitably skilled Medical Officers to Gove District Hospital.

(b) PARAMEDICAL STAFF Pharmacy:

Laboratory:

Radiography:

Ms R Fenton-Smith resigned mid December 1990 and was replaced with Mr T Sullivan who commenced in December 1990.

Mr Gabe Schraven continues in this position.

Mrs Norma Arnold commenced on 9 October to replace Ms H Devon who resigned on 25 September 1990. The service was

maintained by Locum staffing in the interim.

Physiotherapy: Ms Ruth Hannon continued as Physiotherapist.

(c) NURSING STAFF

The high turn over of nursing staff continued at the Hospital

10. GENERAL

Coomrunity

The hospital continues to offer the following to the people of Nhulunbuy -

Work experience

Tours appropriate to the area of subjects being taught at school

Tours by organisations and members of the public on request Donations

An ornate patchwork quilt wall hanging made by the students of the Nhulunbuy High School was donated to the Hospital in December 1990. The quilt is on display in Ward 1.
