VD means - venerea_ l _ Disease.

In this book, three kinds will be talked about. They are:-

GONORRHOEA SYPHILIS

DONOVANOSIS

The names are a bit long and

hard to spell. Don't worry, it is

more important to learn what

the diseases look like and how

to fix them up.

(6)

GONORROEA

A person with th is sickness has yellow pus coming from his

penis. •

He might say that his penis

burns when he passes urine.

(7)

--~~=-=----=--=~-- --

Wome - n - can get thfs sort of VD.

A baby born to a woman with

this disease can get bad eyes.

(8)

Gonorrhoea is easy to fix up.

Give the person a bottle of three grams (3g) amoxycillin (MOX- ACI N or AMOXIL) medicine and two 500 mg probenecid (BE-

NEMID) tablets.

Remember to get the wife or

girlfriend of the man fixed up.

(9)

-- SYPHfLIS

The disease called syphilis is different from gonorrhoea.

It can first start as a sore on a

man's penis.

(10)

Sometimes there are two or three sores and they usually

don't hurt.

(11)

-

-

- -

Sores can sometimes come up on other parts of the body,

like the mouth,

- or finger.

(12)

After about one or two months the sores go away. The person thinks he is OK, but the syphilis disease gets into the blood and makes the person sick again later on.

He might get a temperature, or

a skin rash.

(13)

- - - - --

SO m - e ti m - e - s -t fl e ha i r Or eyebrows fall out.

Sometimes new sores or lumps

come up around the penis or

anus.

(14)

After a while, the rashes, sores and lumps go away, but the sickness stays inside the body if

it is not fixed up right away.

After a long ti - me, it can make many parts of the body sick -

like bones and joints.

It can even get into the liver, the kidneys and the brain.

If you think someone has got syphilis, you should first take some blood, and send it to the

hospital for a VD test.

(16)

You need to fill a 10 ml syringe with blood from the person's

arm, and put it in a plain blood , tube.

This sickness can usually be . fixed up with one injection of

penicillin.

(17)

- --

- - -- -- -

The aose - of LPG penicillin is 1.8 g.

Remember to take blood from someone you have fixed up for syphilis after 3 months, 6 months, and one year. It can show that the sickness has been

properly cured.

(18)

Donovanosis

A man called Donovan wrote about this venereal disease.

It can start as a small sore on the penis. It looks a bit like

syph i I is.

(19)

- - -- -- ... - -

The sore can spread all over the penis. •

It can sometimes

spread to the groin.

(20)

If you think a person has got this kind of VD, take them to a

doctor.

Donovanosis is best fixed up in a hospital with a tetracycline medicine.

A person with this sickness

will have to take tablets for

a long time.

(21)

Venereal diseases start when germs get into the body. Germs are so small, you can only see them with a microscope. They

are all different shapes and sizes. Here are some pictures of VD germs-

and Donovanosis germs .

- - -- - - - -

- - - -

There are plenty of germs in the pus, and on the sores of people with VD.

The germs can be passed from one person to another when they have sex together.

The medicines that you give to fix up VD slow down and kill these germs, so they cannot

spread inside the body. They

stop the VD spreading from a

sick person to a well person.

(24)

Health workers can help to stop the spread of VD.

You can tell the people in your community about the different VD sicknesses, and show them some films.

You can tell the people to come

and see you if they think they

might have VD.

(25)

OO<c, 22. / I\

- -

You can fix them up early with the right medicine, and stop the

sickness from spreading.

You can make sure that the wife . or girlfriend gets fixed up.

You can ask people if they

would like a blood test for

syphilis every year.
