This material is the result of many years of field testing and development on the part of the I.A.D. Health Worker Literacy Programme, sisters, health workers and doctors working with the Health Department (Southern Region) and members of the Urapuntja and C.A.A.C. Medical Services. The resource people developing this material need the advice and direction of workers

Notes to tutors

From our observations, many Aboriginal people are unsure about how to write the letters of the alphabet1 They don't know where to start and this means they have to think about

- how to write the letter.

- how to spell the word.

how to keep their writing neat. (What about lessons for doctors too!) - how to write what they want to say.

Health workers don't need to work on activities prepared for children, like sloping lines and aides.

They use medicines every day and there are many other "real life" words they can use for practice.

For beginning writers a small part of their work each week should include writing practice. Just 10 minutes a day is enough if they can do it every day.

U~ lots of scrap paper - then throw it away. This work should not be kept. It is practice work and is not for showing or testing. In the beginning use words the health workers are familiar with then they only have to worry about writing, not understanding and writing at the same time.

Get health workers to write on the blackboard or in the sand.

Find out the things they need to write (e.g. names, addresses, problems treatments).

Later on handwriting practice can use their own language experience sentences from the workbooks.

Remember:

Health workers cannot learn by sitting down and filling in the book in one day, or by working on their own.

Even handwriting practice needs language work as well.

Regular practice will give confidence.

Please let us know what works and what doesn't. We need your comments to keep us on the right track.
