BEFORE OPERATION AFTER OPERATION

If patients look after their hands carefully they can be repaired to look like the one on the right. It is the patient's job to see that.

every joint of every paralysed finger is moved throughout its

whole range of movement at least once every day. He must also

soak his hands in water for ten to twenty minutes and he must

then pare down any callus or hard skin on them. The same thing

applies to the feet: they need daily care and attention. In addi-

tion, if the patient has lost feeling on the soles of the feet he

must always wear some sort of footwear.

When you look at the foot on the left it appears t ~ be healed.

After carefully paring down the hard skin you find an ulcer un-

t

derneath. It is very important to soak hard insensitive feet in water for -ten to twenty minutes a day. After that you should pare down the callus and then thoroughly massage them with grease.

People who have lost the feeling in their feet must wear some sort of footwear and quite often this has to be made specially for them by a proper bootmaker.

DERMATITIS CAUSED

BY A SULPHONE

TREATMENT: DDS or AVLOSULPHONE is the most common and

the cheapest form of treatment for leprosy. However, it can sometimes cause dematitis or anaemia.

HANSOLAR (Acedapsone) is a long-acting injection suitable for use in the rural areas.

RIFAMPICIN is a powerful antibiotic medicine that has to be given under close supervision.

CLOFAZIMINE or 8663 is another very powerful medicine used in treatment. It makes the skin look darker and colours the urine.

All of these medicines have to be given to you by your doctor, your nursing

sister or by your health worker. They are the people who know how much of

each one you should have and they also know of any problems you could

have with any of them.
