Elizabeth's little boy Joe has a fever so she takes him to the clinic.

"Hey this kid is hot" says Alice, the health worker. She picks up the thermometer and wipes the end with a swab.

Ifs really hard to see the silver line on the thermometer.

Alice turns it around in her fingers and looks closely.

It is not below all the numbers. She shakes it hard so the silver goes down.

Alice tells Elizabeth to put the thermometer under Joe's tongue.

She tells him to close his mouth but warns him not to bite the thermometer. He'll get glass in his mouth if he does I

looks at the clock. She has to it in Joe's mouth for 3 minutes. While she waits she thinks of all

things that might make Joe hot.

She asks Joe's mother some questions.

"How long has he been sick?"

Elizabeth said Joe was playing yesterday but got hot last night.

Alice takes the thermometer out of Joe's mouth. She looks for the silver line. It takes her a while to find it.

The line stops between the 9 and the 40 mark on the thermometer.

Alice knows that 9 means 39. She counts the number of little lines up to the end of the silver line. There are 5.

She gives Joe some panadol elixir. Alice tells Joe's mother to give him plenty of fluids to drink and to give him a cold wash.

Alice knows that these things will help make the temperature go down and make Joe feel better. She shows Elizabeth how to cool wash Joe. If Joe gets hot down in the camp then Elizabeth can give him a cool wash.

Remember

1 . . Wipe the thermometer with a swab.

2. Shake it hard until it's below the numbers.

3. Put the thermometer under the tongue for 3 minutes.

4. Ask how long the patient has bee n · sick.
