Monthly News - August 2012

4 and 16 month Subscription type- No change to National and State fees!

Club Registrars: are you ready to go with opening this next week? I am about to send down the prices into your club console for you to add your club fee and open to the portal. Do you remember how?

Do you know how much your club component is going to be? Now is the time to refresh your memory on the process. Any concerns-please contact the branch office. It can so easily be done on your behalf if you need the help, do not hesitate to ask.

2013 Meet calendar is finalised

As this document goes to the printer many of you will be happy to know that Blacktown Beavers have agreed to combine their long course meet in March with State as a preparatory competition for the Nationals. This means medals will be awarded.

Ettalong Pelicans Club Banner Challenge

The Board has accepted an offer from Ettalong Pelicans to have a club banner challenge. Ettalong is donating $50 as prize in a lucky draw for clubs whose banner is displayed on the wall at the State Short Course Championships in October. Be in it to win it folks!

Repeat news-Volunteer of the Month

Congratulations to Katherine Woodburn from Manly club on taking the prize for Volunteer of the Month! The inaugural winner, Katherine was not sure if she was being contacted with good news.

For you to get involved in this initiative simply write a paragraph describing the person’s impact on you or your club and they may win a $30 gift card. This is club neutral, meaning that you don’t have to stay within your own club. Who looks after you, who goes the extra mile, who makes the calls or makes the tea? Our clubs are run by an army of generous souls and this is one small way to say thank you. Please email your nominee to the Branch office BEFORE the Board meeting each month ie by noon on the Friday before the 3rd Monday. (September 17) Small print- Be aware that the information may be used for publicity purposes.

Workplace Healthy and Safety-Warm up Supervisor (WUS)

It was a timely message in last month’s news regarding WUS’s and their important role at swim meets. Last weekend the attentive WUS had to revive a swimmer during their warm up. All clubs are asked to consider the skill set their members have and all club safety officers need to take a fresh look at processes and procedures. Are you prepared for an incident? How many and who has their First Aid certificate? Do you have up to date medical information on your members? Emergency contact? How about starting a buddy system so that at least one person on pool deck knows a little more about their lane mates. This time we have a happy ending, next time might be you!

Swimmers are asked to respect the directions given by WUS’s - for safety’s sake.

Masters Swimming NSW Monthly News — August 2012 2

2013 Masters Swimming National Championships 17-20 April

As hosts of the National Championships in 2013 MSNSW is looking for sponsorship. If you can help, or have contacts please contact the organizing committee through the Branch office.

It is also time to hear the clarion call to inform and entice all members to actively participate in this fabulous opportunity. We need to make a lot of noise to stimulate interest and make it the ‘best games ever”! So, while the organising committee has their heads down and tails up we need all members to get on board and spread the word...

Billeting opportunity

Any members willing to billet an out of town/out of state participant in the Nationals are asked to email their contact details to the Branch office as soon as possible so a directory of available accommodations can be offered to entrants. You already have something in common-we love swimming! The form is on our website for you to fill in and return to the Branch office. It may seem early to do this but other States are booking flights and accommodation now.

New Club

Welcome to Camden Club who will be seen in your program with the code NCD. We wish you many happy swims sharing fun, fitness and friendship.

New look Splash Splash-e

Feedback is requested for the new look Splash-e. Wendje is open to comments and suggestions on how we can best present news items to our members. Contact her NOW for the next issue at [email protected]

Clubs are requested to send in worthy news items to be shared across the Branch. And photos!

Marketing opportunity

There was little response to the offer of funding to clubs to market their own ideas for attracting new members. Two clubs will receive financial support and, if a successful campaign is launched their ideas will be shared across the Branch. Does your club want to grow? Get your heads together and send in your proposals.

Website details

Please check your clubs details on the Website and notify any changes that need to be made. Thank you to those clubs that checked and found out-of-date details, I’m happy to change them for you. In this age of technology this may be the first port of call for new members to find you-make it easy for them.

Australian Fin Swimming Championships

We are supporting this swim meet at SOPAC on 8-9 September with mention and links on our website. They are looking for timekeepers so if you are interested please check them out http://www.odex.com.au/

As the expo will involve many international companies and sports people they are offering some duo events for Master competitors if any members are interested in taking part using fins.

Medals will be presented for winners of open events and certificates for Age group winners. Only registered members will be eligible for age or open records. Distances involved are 50m – 1500m.

If you are not interested in competing you might like to go along and watch the events as well as the world championships of free diving.

Sports Federation Courses available

Have you checked out the courses provided by the Sports Federation that may benefit your club and members? They include: Marketing your club and Writing Winning Grants plus so much more.

For details and to book, please visit www.sportnsw.com.au under Education.

Jillian Pateman Administrator The next Board meeting is scheduled for Monday 17 September 2012.

These meetings are open to any member of Masters Swimming NSW. Please notify the branch office by the Friday before the meeting of your intention to join us or of any agenda items you wish to add.
