Examination for Students in Medicine Regulation 3.34, concerning a preliminary course in Medicine, was

802 - 6. MEDICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Two tests during the year, covering lectures and practical work and a 3-hour written paper (Pass and Honours); practical exam if classwork is unsatisfactory; viva voce tests as notified by the Department.

803-1. APPLIED PHARMACOLOGY

Candidates are also expected to demonstrate adequate knowledge of pharmacology to Division II standard. A course of about ninety lectures in Pathology and practical work in gross and microscopic pathology. In addition, reference should be made to the pathological sections in prescribed textbooks of Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

MEDICAL PSYCHOLOGY AND CLINICAL PSYCHIATRY A course of lectures, seminars, and tutorials at the beginning of the Fourth Year

PAEDIATRICS

Students live at the Royal Children's Hospital for two weeks in the fifth year. The exam in Obstetrics and Gynecology includes a question about the care and diseases of the newborn child. In the 5th year, all students spend 6 weeks full-time as a full-time clerk with psychiatric patients (inpatients, outpatients and day patients).

POST - MORTEM DEMONSTRATIONS

Questions about psychiatry are included in the final exam in Medicine; while all students are asked psychiatric questions in the medical clinics.

COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

At the end of the 5th year clinical clerkship period, there is a multiple choice exam. The Public Health Administration lecture course will include the following topics: World Health Organization; health administration in Commonwealth and State Australia, with particular emphasis on Victoria, including the role played by municipalities and voluntary organisations. Population and health services; control of communicable diseases, including administrative aspects of tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases; industrial hygiene, including hazardous occupations;

804-3. SURGERY GENERAL SURGERY

A course of fourteen lectures during the Fifth Year, of which ten lectures will be given at the University and four at the Royal Children's Hospital.

RADIOLOGY

DISEASES OF THE THROAT, NOSE AND EAR

Emphasis will be placed on methods of examination and knowledge of common conditions should be acquired in the following areas:. i) Surgical anatomy and basic physiology of work. ii) Deafness and hearing tests, including basic audiometry. iii) Differential diagnosis and treatment of ear pain and ear discharge. iv) Vertigo and differential diagnosis. v) Intracranial complications of ear and nose diseases. vi) Minor procedures such as: wax removal; paracentesis of the tympanic membrane; removal of a foreign body from the ear canal. i) Surgical anatomy and basic physiology of work. This subject will be covered by instruction in the medical, surgical, and gynecological clinics at each of the teaching hospitals, with special attention given to lectures and demonstrations of the principles of diagnosis and treatment. There is no formal exam, but questions may be included in the medical and surgical exams.

804 - 4. OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY

  • Clinical Instruction at Recognized Teaching Hospitals CLINICAL MEDICINE," CLINICAL SURGERY, CLINICAL OBSTETRICS
  • Seminars on selected topics are held by the Department of Medicine between November and mid-March
  • On three other afternoons, students attend the Medical and Surgical Wards for teaching in small groups by tutors
  • Twelve lectures in Medical Psychology are given during the first and second terms
  • Pathology. Post-mortem demonstrations are given each day at 12 noon
  • During the last two months of the year ( after the Pathology Examination), students attend the hospital all day and are rostered to Medical or Surgical Units
  • Royal Women's Hospital and Royal Children's Hospital

During the last two months of the year (after the Pathology exam), students attend the hospital all day and are enrolled in medical or surgical units. A course of lectures in Medicine and Surgery is given during the third clinical term by members of the Honorary Medical Staff. Clinical demonstrations are also carried out on some Saturday mornings by the Honorary Medical Staff of the Footscray and District Hospital.

ST. VINCENT'S HOSPITAL

During the year, the students spend half of the year at the hospital and the other half at the Royal Women's Hospital and the Royal Children's Hospital. Students stay ten weeks at the Royal Women's Hospital and ten weeks (non-stay) at the Royal Children's Hospital. Students go to the Royal Women's Hospital and the Royal Children's Hospital for a two-week refresher course.

THE ROYAL WOMEN'S HOSPITAL FIFTH YEAR

This will be incorporated into medicine on a one day per week basis over a period of three months. Students will spend two weeks in the clinic for further instruction in minor surgery and injury treatment. Students are expected to accompany the patients they are responsible for when they go to theatre.

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL BIOLOGY (WALTER AND ELIZA HALL INSTITUTE)

The department is organized into five main units, namely cellular immunology, cancer research, clinical research, biochemistry and biophysics, and experimental pathology. In each unit, candidates will be required to carry out research in one of the fields currently being studied in the unit, the subject must be approved by the Professor of Medical Biology and the work must be carried out under the closer. guidance by the head of unit and general guidance by the professor. The research results will usually be published and a thesis is required. Knowledge of relevant topics in current journals published in English is expected.

PHYSIOLOGY, BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHARMACOLOGY

The special training required in Obstetrics shall consist of not less than one year's experience as Resident Medical Officer in the Obstetrics Department of The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, or equivalent. Clinical schools at Australian universities must have equivalent status; in the case of public hospitals or departments not so recognized, the Faculty of Medicine will require of a candidate particular particulars of his experience, the acceptance of which will enable the candidate to proceed with the degree. The special training required in gynecology must consist of at least one year's experience as a Resident Medical Officer in the gynecology department in one of the clinical schools of the University of Melbourne or equivalent.

Articles in Physiological Reviews, Annual Review of Biochemistry, Annual Review of Physiology, Obstetric and Gynecology Survey, Clinical Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, Annual Review of Pharmacology, Pharmacology Reviews. When assessing equivalence, the same status as that described in point 2 (above) is required, with the necessary changes.

CHAPTER 10

POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL DIPLOMAS DIPLOMA IN PUBLIC HEALTH

ANATOMY

PHYSIOLOGY

The joint medical library of the Ophthalmological Association of Australia (A.M.A.) and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital contains textbooks, reference books and journals. The examination may include questions relevant to any aspect of the medicine and surgery of abnormal conditions affecting the visual apparatus and adnexae. The joint library of the Ophthalmological Association of Australia (A.M,A.) and The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital contains all current ophthalmic textbooks and reference books and journals.

PATHOLOGY (INCLUDING MICROBIOLOGY) PATHOLOGY

The examination may include questions relating to (a) the general physiology of the nervous and circulatory systems and nutrition and metabolism; (b) detailed physiology of the head, neck and thoracic organs. Evidence that he has performed under the supervision of one or more consultants in otolaryngology all the usual procedures of the specialty. In addition, candidates will be expected to have a sound knowledge of general medical and general surgical aspects of all conditions relevant to the specialty.

PART I ANATOMY

Knowledge of relevant pathological topics appearing in current English-language medical periodicals is expected. In addition, candidates are expected to be informed of relevant issues in current English-language radiology periodicals. PATHOLOGY

DIPLOMA IN THERAPEUTIC RADIOLOGY

Evidence of having carried out all the general procedures of the specialty under the supervision of one or more consultants in radiation therapy. Candidates are encouraged to consult the Chair of the Standing Committee for advice on the current joint procedures. In addition, detailed knowledge of all technical procedures in radiation therapy will be required, together with an understanding of the general principles of radiation biology.

DIPLOMA IN PSYCHOLOGICAL MEDICINE

The examination may include questions about the anatomy of (i) the respiratory system (including its histology and development), (ii) the heart and pericardium, (iii) the peripheral nerves, (iv) the nervous system, (v) the sub- arachnoid and subdural, with their coverings and contents, (vi) superficial venous system. The examination may include questions about the physiology of (i) respiration, (ii) circulation, (iii) metabolism, (iv) secretion, (v) the nervous system. Candidates are expected to have a detailed knowledge of the most common respiratory, cardiovascular and renal diseases.
