Under 18s Report – Garry MacFadyen.

The NSW 7-a-Side U’ 18 Tournament was played at Port Macquarie on 11th and 12th August 2012, and while our teams were competitive, we finished out of the places. We were represented by Luke Mc Beatty in singles (Everglades), Maddison Fennel (Gwandalan) and Jacob Casswell (Ettalong Memorial) in pairs, and in the fours, Jacob Burns and Caleb Peck (Bateau Bay), Brad McIntire (Avoca Beach) and Jayden Moody (Terrigal). A number of our bowlers were representing in Zone bowls for the first time and the experience will stand them in good stead for the future. Congratulations to Luke and Maddison who were selected in the City team to play Country later in the year.

On Monday 20th August, the Central Hub (Avoca Beach, Terrigal, Wamberal and Davistown) ran a Primary Schools Gala Day at Terrigal Bowling Club. With more than enough helpers from the four clubs plus Mark Whiteman (Development Officer) to co-ordinate activities, we successfully catered for 90 year 5 and 6 students from surrounding schools. Reports on the event appeared in Grandstand and in the latest NSW bowls magazine. Thanks to Peter for the photos and report.

A number of our U’18 bowlers will compete in a junior event at Asquith on 7th October. It is great to see our young bowlers taking advantage of these opportunities to develop their game.

General Business:

1. Clubs were reminded that for them to remain affiliated with Bowls NSW all Bowlers must be registered with RNSWBA.

2. Lauchlan Tighe presentations, 27th and 28th October at Avoca Beach.

3. Greg Helm request for Clubs to host Bowls Box seminars. Josh Wilton offered his services on this matter.

4. Training of Controlling Bodies – Wamberal. Tony Hegyi spoke on this matter and offered to conduct a Workshop / seminar. This is an important topic, so all persons likely to act as Controlling Bodies should attend.

5. Creightons Over 70 Challenge is planned for 29th October 2012.

6. Wyong 100 years celebrations will be attended by Ian MacKnight, Max Le Guier and Kevin Dring.

7. Match committee. Questions asked re various matters including the conditions of greens.

8. The meeting discussed the article in Jack 16 that questioned if this Zone should cease honoraria and employ an Administrator. The strong view of the meeting was that the current method of paying honoraria to 7 people was far superior to employing an administrator.

Next Meeting: 15th November 2012.

The meeting closed at 9.05 pm.

Confirmed

Reports for Management Meeting to be held 20

th

September 2012

President- Max Le Guier

On Saturday 21st July, I had the pleasure of attending the final of the Zone Triples contested

by the Aron Sherriff team from Ettalong against another Ettalong team skippered by Lee Trethowan. It was a game that could have gone to either side, with good bowls played, but the conditions were not good.

Aron’s team was the eventual winner. Well done team.

Thank you Munmorah United for the use of your club and the catering. Thanks also to President Charlie, the Board and Staff.

I was accompanied by Albert Heath and Bob Bourke.

On Tuesday 24th July, the Executives had a meeting with President John O’Connell and his staff re:

the No1 Pennant play off on Saturday 4th August till Monday 6th, all went well.

Saturday 4th August, I attended The Greens for the Pennant play off accompanied by all Zone Officials. Our Match Committee has done us proud over all games, Umpires and all workers,

thank you. We also had the company of the State President Ian, State Chairman of Match John and State Chairman of Umpires Leo. President John of The Greens was complimented on the way everything ran, with a special thanks to Maxine Gold.

On Saturday11th and Sunday 12th August, I attended the Pat Geary Trophy at Lambton Bowling Club. What a monster the weather turned out to be. On Saturday, one game was played in rain squalls and gale force winds. Zone 2 played Zone 15, it was any bodies game with Zone 2 the winner. At least one game was played. Sunday was not as bad with 2 games played of which we won both against Zone 6 and Zone 14. Our luck came when Zone 6 won by a big margin beating Zone 2, which gave us enough shots up to win the Trophy. Our last win was in 2003, so our players have done the Zone proud.

Saturday 18th August, I had the pleasure of attending the Umina Beach Bowling Club Presidents Day. I was accompanied by State Councillor Kevin, Secretary Doug and Vice President Bob Bourke Zone Publicity Officer. President Ross was unable to attend after surgery. Senior Vice President Ron Austin and his able band of workers made the day. Several awards were given out for willing work by club volunteers. These are the members that make every club something to be proud of.

Sunday 19th August, State Councillor Kevin and I attended the Rookies Final at Halekulani Bowling Club played between Andrew Parkinson of Toukley and Josh Rolfe from Woy Woy. It was a good game to watch, played on a speedy green. The eventual winner being Andrew Parkinson, who will go on to represent Zone15 at Raymond Terrace in October. Good luck Andrew.

On Saturday 1st September, I attended the final of the Champion of Champions at The Greens contested by Chris Smith from Gwandalan against Phil Flippence from The Greens. It was a good game to watch, played in cold conditions. Both players showing their skills in drawing and driving with Phil the eventual winner. It was a great game by two good players. I was accompanied by Councillor Kevin, Geoff Armstrong, Bob Bourke and Reg. Richardson. Thanks also to Bowls Co-ordinator Josh Wilton and President John O’Connell from The Greens. Thanks also to Treasurer Albert Heath for marking the Final for me.

On Friday 7th September, I went to Tamworth for the annual Inter-Zone games. Our team played hard bowls winning the first game with their last 2 bowls. Saturday mornings game was also a hard one, losing by 3 shots.

State Councillor Kevin Dring

The State Council meeting of July 19th 2012 was solely devoted to the important topic of Recruitment and Retention. A presentation by Michael Beaumont provided an update of membership data and trends. It was apparent that Bowls NSW did not favour an overall dedicated Open Day across the State mainly for logistical reasons and a mixed reaction by some Zones to participating in such a recruitment programmes. It would appear that whilst we are continuing to attract a steady stream of new bowlers into the sport the retention rate is not good and Zones and Clubs need to pay attention to this aspect of the process. Speakers on behalf of Zones 9 & 13 demonstrated an understanding and empathy with the marketing process and were supportive of our Zone 15 proposal that the Bowls NSW Board of Directors review the internal staff structure with the view of evaluating the appointment of a Marketing Manager

(4)

who could also be responsible for Sponsorship. It was agreed that our proposal be taken up at a future Board meeting. A paper titled “Membership is Dead?” by Belinda Moore from Strategic Membership Solutions an Australian owned and operated consultancy specializing in sponsorship and membership recruitment was circulated highlighting the powerful generational, cultural and economic forces that will make the next 5-20 years the toughest ever faced by associations. Fir more thought provoking information on this vital subject check out her Web Site [email protected]

The next State Council meeting is on September 27th preceding the Bowls NSW AGM which will determine the office-bearers for 2012-13.

The agenda topics for this State Council meeting are as follows:- The cost of State Pennant Play-offs from Zone 1

Coaching and reaccreditation from Zone 2

Regulation 8.3(?)- (3.9) Disciplinary action for non bowls related incident from Zone 10

Bowls NSW Magazine review from Zone 15 Membership sub committee from Zone 9

A meeting of all Zones was held in conjunction with the State Inter-Zone Sides Championships at Tamworth from September 7-9 2012. It was resolved that the 2013 championships will once again be contested by 16 players per Side (4 teams x 4) hosted by Zone 5 in 2013. An Open Draw was conducted and produced the following outcome:-

Section 1 Section 2 Section 3 Section 4 Blacktown City Blacktown City Blacktown Workers St Mary’s RSL

A Z 11 Z 7 Z 3 Z 2

B Z 10 Z 5 Z 16 Z 9

C Z 13 Z14 Z 12 Z 15

D Z 1 Z 4 Z 6 Z 8

Finals Blacktown City

In general business a motion by Zone 15 that future State Inter-Zone Championships follow the same format as the State Pennant Final Series ie. Round Robin Sat/Sun Semi-finals Sun PM and the final Mon AM was passed. Subsequent thinking raised doubts over the practicality of Zone 5 being able to host this event under this format using three Clubs as the logistics of getting the semi-finalists together during the Sunday lunch break may not be practical. State Match Committee to consider ramifications and put a recommendation back through the State Council.

CEO Greg Helm is keen to ensure that all Clubs are now using Bowls Box to receive all official correspondence and circulars from RNSWBA. If any Club is unaware of this service or is having problems operating it they are to let Greg know immediately. Greg’s newsletter the Weekly Roll-up which is featured within Bowls Box is his way of keeping Club’s better informed with snippets of news in an informal manner and personalizing information.

Greg is also particularly keen to breakdown the old “Them and Us” syndrome between Clubs / Zones and the Royal and with the new corporate governance structure in place along with State Council now representing its Zone and respective Clubs, it is timely that we all make a conscious effort to foster better relationships with open two-way communication. Greg is also undertaking a series of workshops over coming months to ensure all Clubs totally understand the role of Bowls Box and outlining some other important opportunities that today’s technology provides.

As your State Councillor I represent the Zone and our Clubs on key issues at State level, so please table any issues through your Club secretaries to the Zone so as they can be discussed and taken forward.

I am here to help and provide guidance and direction wherever possible.

Zone 15 State Council Report for the RNSWBA State Council meeting 27th September 2012

The State No 1 Pennant Final hosted by The Greens The Entrance Bowling Club on the Central Coast was an outstanding success with Cabramatta defeating Belrose 62 – 49 in a most entertaining final.

The hosting fee was shared between The Greens Bowling Club and The Entrance Town Centre

Management with both parties being rewarded many times over. Blessed with good weather, each day’s play attracted large spectator crowds and the Clubs trading figures over that weekend were the best in memory. The local business community and accommodation venues were also delighted with the influx of visitors to the town at a traditionally quiet time of the year. The Zone invested $1,500 in print advertising in local newspapers leading up to yhe event designed to increase awareness and showcase our sport amongst the local community. NBN 3 featured the event twice on their evening news over the three days including a segment on the final.

Slow play in one particular game, especially by one rink in round 3, caused a late start and a late finish under lights of the semi-finals on the Sunday and it was an example of how umpires and the Controlling Body need to be vigilant to such play as it can potentially detract from the overall staging of the event.

Today’s electronic age was well to the forefront with a progressive scoreboard being displayed on a big screen in the Club house and updated every 20 minutes on the Zone’s Web Site, with 12,000 hits being recorded over the 3 days. All in all, a most successful weekend befitting of the State Grade 1 Pennant final.

The Zone’s AGM was held on Thursday August 17 with the Zone Executive being elected as follows:- President Max Le Guier, Senior Vice President Col Bray, Secretary Doug Rose, Treasurer Albert Heath Vice Presidents Geoff Armstrong, Peter Arnold, Bob Bourke and Phil Davies.

The Pat Geary Trophy, a longstanding four ways tournament played between Zones2, 6, 14 & 15 was hosted by Lambton Bowling Club over the weekend of August 11 – 12 in atrocious weather conditions.

With Zones 2 & 15 winning two games apiece. Zone 15 was declared the winner with a superior margin to break Zone 2’s dominance in recent years. Over the years this event has attracted the interest of State Selectors but regretfully no one was in attendance this year.

Secretary – Doug Rose

Office Bearers – With the Zone AGM held 16th August 2012, a list of Office Bearers has been emailed to Clubs and is published on the BCC web site . This being the season of AGM’s and therefore changes of Office Bearers, I have emailed to all Clubs the latest list of Club’s Office Bearers. Clubs have been asked to respond by 1/10/12 if any entry needs to be updated. My thanks to the many Clubs who have already advised me of the changes to the personnel.

Email lists – I have also asked people on my email list of Clubs to advise if they no longer wish to receive emails or it is no longer appropriate for them to receive emails. To allow Clubs to check who from their Club is receiving these emails I never use blind copy. Club Secretaries are encouraged to check this list occasionally and advise me if any of the addresses are now unnecessary. Clubs are encouraged to ensure that at least two email addresses appropriated for their Club are provided in case one malfunctions.

Bowler of the Year – with the BCC and 1 Sherriff, Aron Ettalong Memorial 200 Club Championships nearing completion 2 McDonald, Harley Ettalong Memorial 175 The Bowler of the year ladder is getting 3 Roberts, John Ettalong Memorial 90 interesting. With the domination of BCC 4 Rolfe, Josh Woy Woy 80 Championships by Ettalong, their players 4 Smith, Chris Gwandlan 80 hold the top 3 spots. I have not received 4 Trethowan, Lee Ettalong Memorial 80 any results from the following Clubs: 7 Flippence, Phil The Greens 75 Avoca Beach, Bateau Bay, Gosford City, 8 Neilson, Dave Terrigal 70 Halekulani, Morisset, Norah Head, The 9 Balsdon, Steve Ettalong Memorial 60 Greens and Toukley District. 9 Parkinson, Andrew Toukley District 60

Hosting Pat Geary Memorial Shield – Next year it is our turn to host this prestigious event. A request for Expressions of Interest to host this event will be issued in the next few weeks. The event is held on the week after the State Pennant Finals which for 2013 will be 10th & 11th August. At least 2 greens are required with lights. Clubs will be asked to assist the BCC with funding for the event. A condition will be

(6)

that meal costs will be a maximum of $10 for Breakfast and $12 for Lunch. The request for EOI will have more details of the requirements.

Umpires Report – Leo Finn

The Umpires panel has had a couple of quiet months.

We are currently running classes for members from Diggers and Mingara and a further class at Toukley RSL. It is pleasing to note that these Clubs are in need of Umpires due to members retiring and these members have seen the need to step up and be counted. I can only encourage other members to do the same and hopefully we the Zone will continue to be one of the largest and strongest group of Umpires in the State.

We must remember that the Club cannot run Championship events without Umpires and Controlling Bodies in official positions. So it is necessary to have your Club sponsor people into the roll of Umpire and Controlling Body.

There are currently 222 umpires and measures in Zone 15.

Website Manager and IT Advisor – Geoff Graham

Page Requests – The Zone Website continues to go from strength to strength registering a massive 33,097 hits in July and August this year compared to 18,487 over the same 2 months last year. The 20 minute live update provided on the Zone Website on 4th, 5th and 6th August of all rink scores from The Greens The Entrance BC during the playing of the Grade 1 State Pennant Finals was obviously appreciated as the site received 11,955 hits over the 3 days. Once again I would like to thank the members of the Zone 15 Match Committee who acted as runners and made this service possible. Also Denise Ellison from The Greens did a great job relaying scores from green 4 on the walkie talkie supplied by the club.

I would also like to thank the Management at The Greens for updating the overhead projector for the event which provided an excellent display of the scores inside the Club.

Financial Report – Albert Heath.

Selectors Report – Richard (Dick) Love

The newly appointed selectors voted me, Dick Love in as Chairman for the coming year. I thank Ray Vetter for his work as Chairman for several years.

The selectors have all completed a Bowls Australia module on selection and, as a result, have formulated the following objectives for Zone 15 selected teams:-

To achieve these goals the selectors believe we have to raise the bar in several key areas. The Chairman will meet with the Zone Executive on Monday 17th September to outline these plans which include preparation for events, selectors involvements with Clubs, statistical review of performance, training routines and player commitment and disciplines.

All clubs will be requested ( by November 2012) to provide a list of players considered worthy of selection in Open, Seniors, Emerging, Under 25 and Under 18 categories. These will be developed into lists on the Zone Website from which Zone sides will be selected. All these players will then be issued with a calendar of 2013 events and a letter of commitment which must be signed and returned to the Zone Secretary.

State Inter Zone Championships at Tamworth September 7/8/2012.

Our Inter-Zone side preformed credibly in a very strong section at Tamworth. In the first game against Zone 11, we came from well back to win on the last bowl. Both Aron Sherriff and John Roberts played absolute bombs with their last bowls to clinch the win. In the second game against arch rivals Zone 2 Newcastle, we fell short by 3 shots across the four rinks. Conditions were difficult with strong winds and a fast green and several new Zone players, such as Justin Shelley and Jeff Watson really benefited from the experience. In the third game we played the star studded Zone 16 Illawarra team and were beaten by 7 shots in a very high standard game. Zone 16 went on to be beaten finalists by Zone 13 from South Sydney.

Zone 15 has won this championship twice in 1996 and 2005 and we plan to return to the winning list in the immediate future.

The selectors will meet on September 25th and will select a team to play N.S.W. RSL team at the Entrance in November. We will also review the Inter-Zone performance and the under 25 Inter-Zone Championships at Belmont.
