Release of 2021 NAPLAN preliminary data

Purpose

To announce the release of the 2021 NAPLAN preliminary reports on Tuesday 13 July.

Background

Queensland is currently in the process of transitioning from paper to online delivery of the NAPLAN tests. This year, the preliminary reports for both online and paper schools will be released on Tuesday 13 July 2021.

The NAPLAN preliminary data include reports for the test domains of Grammar and Punctuation, Reading, Numeracy, Spelling and Writing. The reports contain preliminary data (raw scores) for each student. Bands and scale scores are not yet available from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA).

The final class reports, and student and school summary reports, providing student band and scale score results that take individual item difficulty into account, will be available from August.

ACARA will publish the NAPLAN National Summary Report in August. Paper-based and online schools should begin receiving the individual student reports (ISR) for distribution to

parents/carers at this time.

Information

These raw data do not reflect the difficulty of individual items, i.e. a raw score of 30/50 for two students does not mean that their scaled score will necessarily be the same. Schools should exercise caution in drawing conclusions from this preliminary data.

The raw data in the 2021 NAPLAN preliminary reports enable schools to:

• identify the test domains in which students experienced difficulty. For online schools, the branch taken by individual students is also shown, and each of the class reports includes a schematic of the tailored testing construct

• reflect on their curriculum and teaching, and take early action to improve identified issues

• check the accuracy of data, including the spelling of students’ names, before printing and distribution of individual student reports

• compare the overall performance of classes

• check student participation status, e.g. absent, withdrawn, exempt, refused, sanctioned abandonment.
