The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom. Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

including next steps in our plan to attract more

younger members Rotarians Against Malaria

Last year there were more that 200 million cases of malaria and 438,000 people died due to malaria across the globe. Those are terrible figures but are a significant improvement on deaths of over a million people per annum only a few years ago. The World Health Organisation estimates that international malaria control programs, since the year 2000, have saved the lives of 5.9 million children and Rotarians Against Malaria is proud of its contribution to this in our part of the world. But we (including Rotarians Against Malaria) are slowly but surely making progress to remove that scourge. The WHO is confident that malaria can be defeated and has set a target of 2040 for its total eradication.

Malaria Awareness Day is 30 April and Rotarians Against Malaria want us to take that opportunity to promote community understanding of the global campaign to eradicate malaria.

Only Norma knew the words, but on the second try most managed to sing it.

Try again now:

In come the dollars and in come the cents

To replace the pounds and the shillings and the pence Be prepared folks when the coins begin to mix On the fourteenth of February nineteen sixty six Clink go the cents folks

Clink, clink, clink,

Changeover day is closer than you think

Learn the value of the coins and the way that they appear And things will be much smoother when the decimal point is here In come the dollars and in come the cents

To replace the pounds and the shillings and the pence Be prepared folks when the coins begin to mix On the fourteenth of February nineteen sixty six Guest speaker

Jeff Ibbotson introduced our very own honorary member,

Ros Osbourne who gave us a very worthwhile talk on her approach to share trading called Thinking outside the Box. Ros started by stating she was not a qualified financial adviser and made a formal disclaimer of responsibility for any information she gave.

Ros advised that whatever investment method you choose, the first thing to ensure is that you can sleep at night. It is no use worrying in the early hours of the morning about falling markets or difficult tenants. Once you choose the investment strategy that suits you, make sure you follow at least some of the golden rules; eg, don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and diversify your holdings. A financial adviser is useful in making you aware of the

superannuation and tax implications of your own situation.

Ros has invested in Australian rather than overseas shares because she feels she understands the Australian market. There are over 2,200 listed companies to choose from. What does she do?

She buys and sells Australian shares – choosing companies in which to invest by thinking about socio-economic trends and the shares

she thinks that will increase in value.

According to Ros, people think she is crazy when she says that she buys shares that she expect to gain 100% in a year. ‘If I buy twelve shares in a year and just one of them gains 100% and others gain 50%, 20%

or even 10% I am ahead of the market. It is when they lose 100%, or 50% or even 10% that I am behind.’

If any member would like more information, Ros is very happy to give you her address, if you contact her by email at:

[email protected] Closure

Lyn closed the meeting and wished all to have a great week.

Opening

Sergeant Neale opened the meeting with a toast to the Rotary Club of Albania on their National Day, followed by a toast to our visiting ladies and then handed over the meeting to our Acting President Lyn.

Race night

John Widdup explained some more information in relation to the nature, requirements and expected returns of running a ‘Charity Race Meeting’.

We are required to obtain approval from the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission to conduct what they call ‘charitable gaming’ even though we will be only using play money.

However we should have no difficulty in obtaining the necessary approval as we meet all the requirements – the Club and the proposed event.

The meeting was in favour of the Board proceeding with this event sometime in Winter.

Sergeant session

The Sergeant at Arms amused our members and guests as he extracted a suitable amount of cash from their pockets. Ros Osbourne (our guest speaker) won the two-up and a bottle of wine.

News from our exchange student Isaac Mitchell

The Club received the following news from our exchange student Isaac Mitchell who is now in Norway:

‘My first three weeks in Norway have been amazing! My host family is lovely and I have not experienced any problems with them so far, and I hope I don't encounter any in the future. I went cross-country skiing with them in my second week in Norway. It was so much fun. I had been somewhat prepared for Winter Camp. Meeting all the old exchange students from the States, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and France was awesome. They all had some good points on getting through exchange. I'll be seeing them in a month in Oslo for another Rotary Weekend.

School is going very well. I am making friends and everyone is really nice. The teachers are very helpful and there are no problems there. I haven't yet been to a Rotary Meeting due to Winter Camp and other commitments but this coming week I will be going to one. Cheers, Isaac.’

Fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency into Australia

As the following Sunday, 14 February, was to be the fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of decimal currency into Australia on ‘C-Day’, we were all asked to sing the Dollar Bill Decimal Currency Jingle (circa 1965) to the tune of “Click go the Shears” (lyrics written by Ted Roberts).

Guest speaker Ros addressing the meeting (with the bottle of wine she won in evidence) with Lyn and Phil taking notice of the advice being delivered – together with the remainder of the meeting attendees.
