CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, the writer presents the introduction which consists of background of the study, statement of the problems, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of TheStudy
Literature is the social phenomena that related with life. Like a kind of art, literature appears from the morality of life.Every art work that had been made truly it would have close relationship with life because making the art work is a part of art work maker’s life. The work maker wants to deliver the message by art work.
He expresses what he feels in a paper to write story. Meyer (1990: 03) defines literature as a fiction consisting of carefully arranged words designing to stir imagination.
Reading or watching the literaryworks do not only get enjoyment but also catch the hidden sense until could be understood.To study literature, people should more concentrate to understand the story, as A.Teeuw (in Damhuri, 2010) says “Reading and giving value is not an easy work, because it needs systematic knowledge that complication, complex, and various.”

purpose, it is to entertain viewer. It gives the different experiences that viewer has got from their daily life.When people watch a film, they will probably come into the fantasy and imagination world created by author. Moreover, by watching scene by scene, viewer gets tension, angry, and sad. They do not care that their real emotion come though what the story they watch whether fiction or real. Film doesnot only entertain for the viewer but also has the message that will be delivered to the viewer. The viewer also can take some moral messagesand lessons from film.
Film has the same elements as novel. It is because they both have character and characterization, conflict, plot, theme, and setting. They support each other because each element is important part of film. Film has about two hours of duration. It makes people can understand the story easier than read a novel that needs many time to comprehend the content.
Film tells about the human being and life. The experience that appears in the film, have been made by emotion proccessing, that is why it can affect the emotional of the viewer. Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist” is the focus. This

International Film Festival. In 2005, this film also got Best Actress, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing in Barcelona Film Award.
One of main character in “The Machinist” film is Trevor Reznik, starred by
Christian Bale, is being analized. He finds himself guilty. Guilty is when someone is not taking full the responsibility for the action because he or she may have done something badly. Guilty is very dangerous because it can make someone go on to extreme level of stress, anxiety, and depression. Guilty is the spesific one to be analyzed. Guilty is also the thing that always be occured by the main character in this film.Moreover, Trevor Reznik’s guilty is taken since it becomes the core of
the story. Based on this film, eventhough there is another conflict like physical conflict, the main part of the story is his guilty. When Trevor Reznik gets guilty in his life, he does not realize that all the things he gets for the time is the worse big case in his past. His guilty influences his life experience.
1.2 .Statement of The Problem
From the background of study, theproblemsthat appear in understanding film “The Machinist”are:
1. What is the cause of Trevor Reznik’s guilt in Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist”?
2. What are the effetcs of Trevor Reznik’s guilt in Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist” toward himself?

1.3 Purpose of TheStudy
Based on problem found above, the three purposes of studyare:
1. To describe the cause of Trevor Reznik’s guilt in Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist”
2. To discover the effetcs of Trevor Reznik’s guilt in Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist” toward himself.
3. To find out Trevor Reznik overcome his guilt in Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist” toward himself.
1.4 Significance of The Study
Based on this study,the resultis expected to be ableto be useful for both teachers and learners.
For teachers,the result of this study is hoped can give a contribution in teaching English, especiallyabout the literature. This study hopefully can be alternative reference in teaching literature.

1.5 Scope and Limitation
In this study, the scope of the study isthe main character in Brad Anderson’s film “The Machinist”, Loner Trevor Reznik starred by Christian Bale.The cause and effect of Travor Reznik’s guilt, and Reznik’s way to overcome guilt are the
limitation of this study.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
The definition of key terms are expected to avoidthe missunderstanding for the reader. That is why the defintion of key terms are mentioned.
These are:
1. Analysis is a method by which a thing is separated into parts, and those parts are given rigorous, logical, detailed scrutiny, resulting in a consistent and relatively complete account of elements of the thing and the principles their organization (Holman, 1986:20)
2. Trevor Reznik
Trevor Reznik is the main character in “The machinist” film.
3. Guilt
Guilt is a feeling that is experienced when a person feels regret over something they thought, something they said, or an action the person has done (Holt, 2007).
