1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

To make clear the present study, it is important to discuss a preliminary chapter as the researcher background in this present study. This will be done in chapter 1. This chapter presents some important parts namely; background of the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, the scope and limitation and the definition of key term. Each part is presented as below. communication, it can be verbal communication or nonverbal communication. It is used to express feeling of human. Thirdly, language as a unique status of human language. Human have language that different from animal. Human language is more open-ended and productive.

foreign language. In Indonesia, English is as a foreign language and formally it is taught in school from junior high school until university. It has become an obligatory subject and as one of the subjects examined in National examination.

Teaching is guiding and facilitating learning, enabling the learner to learn, setting the condition for learning which uses teaching strategies, teaching method, and also teaching techniques. According to Brown (2000), teaching is helping someone to learn how to do something, giving instructions, giving in the study of something, providing with knowledge, causing to know or understand. It is important to help students easy to get knowledge because it can be an act of teacher. Hence, there must be way in teaching. A way that will be more effective and efficient depends on the technique used by the teacher. It is also supported by goal of teaching.

English teaching is needed to develop the students’ language ability. It gives a lot of opportunities to the teacher to know the skill of students. It contains two the big parts, they are receptive and productive skills. Productive skill consists of speaking and writing while receptive skill consists of listening and reading. Speaking is skill that enables people to produce expressing idea and opinion. Speaking is very important to communicate in daily life.

stated that technique is the way how the teacher delivers the material to students to reach the learning goal. Techniques will determine whether the teaching learning process succeeds or not.

Many techniques can be applied in English teaching. Demonstration usually tends to be used by the teacher during learning process since it is effective to teach speaking. It can help student speak up what they look at the picture. However, every teacher should be helpful and acceptable for the students to improve speaking skill. In the class, teacher uses demonstration as technique of teaching speaking. It can solve the difficulties of speaking. It will increase the speaking skill in the teaching and learning process.

4 1.2 Statement of Problem

Based on the explanation above, this study attempts to answer the following research questions:

1. What are the techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking for the Tenth grade at SMA Islam Batu?

2. How the teacher applies the techniques in teaching speaking for the Tenth grade at SMA Islam Batu?

3. What are the advantages and disadvantages to apply the techniques in teaching speaking for the Tenth grade at SMA Islam Batu?

1.3Purpose of The Study

By knowing and referring to the statements of problem, the purposes of study are:

1. To know the techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking for the Tenth grade at SMA Islam Batu.

2. To describe how the teacher applies the techniques in teaching speaking for the Tenth grade at SMA Islam Batu.

5 1.4 Significance of The Study

The result of this research is expected to give information to the readers especially English Department lecturers, about whether the students have problems or not related to teaching techniques used by the lecturers in speaking class. Furthermore, this researcher also expected to give information to the teacher about appropriate techniques in teaching speaking. Then, they can use those techniques as the references to developed in teaching speaking. The last, this research will be useful for herself, it can be used as a reference for further researcher who is interested in conducting similar case study.

1.5 Scope and Limitation

The scope of this research is the techniques used by the teacher in teaching speaking of Senior High School.

The limitation of this research is using techniques by the teacher in teaching speaking for the tenth grade students at SMA Islam Batu.

1.6 Definition of Key Term

The following are some key terms that are useful to understand this study better:

1. Speaking : verbal use of language to communicate with others

(Fulcher,2003:23).

2. Technique : Moment to moment of exercise, activities, or tasks

3. Teaching : Helping someone to learn how to do something,

giving instructions, giving in the study of something, providing with knowledge, causing to know or understanf (Brown, 2000). In this study, teaching means learning teaching process to develop the students’ speaking

skill.

4. SMA Islam Batu : One of private school which is located in Batu,

Malang, East Java.

Therefore, to make the teaching and learning speaking interesting more and easy to understand, the teacher should use some techniques of teaching effectively. The techniques should be suitable with student’s characteristics and conditions.

The study used descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study was the English teacher who taught English at SMA Islam Batu. Moreover, in collecting the data the researcher used two instruments. The instruments were observation checklist guideline and interview guideline. The researcher read and reviewed the data that will be classified. Then, the description data will be processed to gain the conclusion.

The result of observation and interview showed that the English teacher used five teaching techniques while teaching speaking, such as: role play, demonstration, oral presentation, storytelling, and picture describe. Those techniques were used in order to make the students speak up.
