A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

For the last 23 years the Indonesia Project, publisher of this journal, has con-ducted an annual ‘Indonesia Update’ conference, in conjunction with the Aus-tralian National University’s Department of Political and Social Change. These conferences always begin with the presentation of economic and political updates, which are then followed by intensive discussion of the chosen theme for each year. Since 1988 the papers presented at the conferences, along with addi-tional commissioned chapters, have been collected together in volumes known initially as the Indonesia Assessment series, and more recently as the Indonesia Updateseries. The first few volumes were published by the ANU; since 1994 they have been published by the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singa-pore.

Beginning this year, we have decided to publish the economic and political update presentations from the annual conferences in the immediately following issue of the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies. This has three advantages. First, it means that the two update papers can be published in far more timely fashion. Second, it means that each Indonesia Update volume can be devoted entirely to that year’s conference theme, with more space available for chapters related to that theme. Third, it means that readers of the journal will be able to gain a better understanding of the political context within which economic pol-icy making in Indonesia takes place.

This is the first issue of the journal in which these new arrangements come into effect. We are proud to bring to our readers two excellent presentations from the Update conference held at the ANU on 23–24 September 2005. The first, by Dr Boediono, former Minister of Finance and former chair of the National Planning Agency, is entitled ‘Managing the Indonesian Economy: Some Lessons from the Past’. The second, by an eminent scholar of Indonesian political affairs, Professor R. William Liddle of Ohio State University, is entitled ‘Year One of the Yudhoy-ono–Kalla Duumvirate’.

On behalf of my colleagues at the Indonesia Project and of the Editorial and International Advisory Boards, I am delighted to present this first ‘new look’ December issue of the Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies.
