THE STUDY

Context of the Study

This research was conducted at English Department of Satya Wacana Christian

University. To obtain the data for the study, five students who passed Speaking 4 class were

taken as participants. They were chosen because theywere supposed to have better vocabulary

and they had different ways to express ideas than the students who did not take speaking 4 class.

Participants

Five students who passed speaking 4 class were selected as participants of this study. The

selection of the participants were based on some criteria such as having passed speaking 4 class

and they speak Indonesian and English.

Data Collection Instrument

The instrument of this study was questions for semi-structured interview. Patton (1990)

stated that semi-structured interview is similar to structured interview but allows for greater

flexibility. The flexibility includes changing the order of the questions to provide opportunity for

follow up questions. The study used semi-structured interview as data collection technique

because it provided richer data than structured interview.

Data Collection Procedure

The first step in the data collection was designing the interview questions. The interview

UKSW, free open topic such as participant’s daily life or intereset, student’s job after graduation,

and their suggestion for UKSW. The next step was piloting the questions. The purposeof piloting

was to ensure that the questions wereappropriate and could elicit data for the study. In the

piloting process, one participant was interviewed. The interview was recorded using a

smartphone. After the interview was completed, the result was transcribed to see whether the

questions wereappropriate and useful for the study or not.

The result of the piloting contained appropriate responses toward the questions such as;

reason to apply in English Department, SIASAT in UKSW, free open topic such as participant’s

daily life or intereset, student’s job after graduation, and the last one was their suggestion for

UKSW.

The real interview was conducted after piloting the questions. It took about 5 minutes for

each participant to answer all questions. The interview was conducted in Bahasa Indonesia. The

purpose of using Bahasa Indonesia was to make sure that all the participants understood the

questions and to encourage code switching to happen. The result of the interview was transcribed

using a clean transcription technique. The focus was on the content of the interview.

Data Analysis

The next part was analyzing the data. The first step was identifying the data collected.

All cases of code switching that happened during interview was identified. The second step was

reread all the interview transcription to make sure that all the code switching cases were

identified. The next step was classifying the data according to the types of code switching. The

the participant.

This research investigated code switching among English Department students who were

already passed speaking 4 class. After the data needed was collected, the data was analyzed using

descriptive method to answer two research questions of this study. The first one was what the

reason the participants code switched. The second one was what the types of code switching used

by the participants.

The findings were organized by answering two questions above in two different sections.

The first step to answer the research questions waslistening to the interview script and

transcribed all the conversation. The second step was underlining the words or sentences which
