(A Descriptive Survey on the Fourth Semester Students of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in Academic Year 2016/2017)

The aims of this study were to know the kinds of learning strategies and the most dominant learning strategy used in essay writing. The population of this study was fourth semester students of English Education Department at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto that consisted of four classes: class A, B, C, and D. The samples of this study were 65 students out of 109 students. The sample was taken by using random sampling. The study used descriptive survey. In collecting the data, the instrument used were questionnaire and interview. Based on the result data of analysis, there were six learning strategies used by the students which is arranged from highest to lowest. Those were compensation strategy with percentage 84.41%, which belong to very high category, memory strategy with percentage 79.17%, social strategy with percentage 78.56%, cognitive strategy with percentage 77.81%, followed by metacognitive strategy with percentage 77.76%. The lowest strategy was affective strategy with percentage 72.30%. Finally, it was found that the fourth semester students of English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto used various learning strategies to support their learning in essay writing. The most dominant strategy used was compensation strategy.
