ABSTRACT

PROBLEMS AFFECTING EFL STUDENTS’ SPEAKING PERFORMANCE

(A Descriptive Study of Second Semester Students English Education Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in Academic Year

2016/2017) Department at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto that consisted of three classes: class A, B, and C. The subject of this study were 80 students. The study used descriptive survey. In collecting the data, the instrument used were questionnaire and interview. Based on the result data of analysis, there were five problem categories that affected the students’ in speaking performance students which is arranged from highest to lowest. Those were linguistically-related problem with percentage 61.25%, which belong to very high category, affective-related problem with percentage 58.15%, Indonesian educational system and facility-related problem with percentage 47.55%, followed by socially-related problem with percentage 42.69% and the lowest problem was instructor-related problem with percentage 35.63%. So that the dominant problem that was affected the students’ in speaking performance was linguistics. Which contain about grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and students fluency in speaking performance. Finally, it was found that the second semester students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto had various problems while speaking performance. The most dominant problem was linguistically-related problem.
