ABSTRACT
This study attempted to find out some factors cause students’ anxiety on
speaking performance of second semester in English Education Department at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. This study was a descriptive study. A
questionnaire was distributed to students to find out the causes of students’
anxiety on speaking performance. To get deeper information, observation and semi-structured interview were conducted. The subject was 79 students of second semester in English Education Department at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. Based on the data collection results, the results were as follow: 66,8% of students had experienced anxiety. Causes was found by some reason on their statements, namely; communication appehension, test anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, lack of motivation, negative self-perception, speaking activities, and competitiveness. It was showed by some symptoms of anxiety on their speaking performance, namely; tremor, eye contact, body movement, lack of speaking ability, shame, hyperventilation, inhibition of thinking, poor concentration, forgetful, easily distracted, tense, nervousness.
