48 APPENDICES
Goenawan Mohamad’s poems which are translated into English by Laksmi Pamuntjak:
1. Firman ke-12 (The 12th Commandment)
Line Source Text Target Text
I do not know what is said in the 12th commandment
2 “Mungkin sesuatu tentang angin dan muara,” katamu
“Maybe something about the wind and the estuary,” you say
3 Ku dengar suaramu I hear your voice 4 Aku bayangkan garam yang dikais
dari ombak
I imagine salt scraped off waves
5 Dan ombak yang di pantai dipatahkan
And waves sundered on the shore
6 Aku bayangkan biduk yang mencari tempat
I imagine a barge seeking space
7 Mendapat, tak mendapat Getting, not getting 8 Aku tak tahu apa yang disebut
dalam firman ke-12
I do not know what is said in the 12th commandment
“Maybe a terse tale about an eternal journey, faraway, with a simple ending.”
And someone will depart; I know not for long
11 Barangkali bintang jadi tajam di dinihari
Perhaps stars are honed at first light
12 Aku bayangkan waktu terseret sungai
I imagine time carried away by the river
49 2. Sang Minotaur (The Minotaur)

1 Di ranjang itu sang Minotaur datang
Into the bed the Minotaur comes
2 Dan mengendus tubuhmu, bulu tubuhmu
And sniffs your body, your body hair
3 Yang kian panas That glows in heat 4 Yang melepas And gives off
5 Aroma adas The aroma of aniseed 6 Parasmu ranum Your face is ripe 7 Seperti biji gandum Like a grain of wheat 8 Di ladang penghabisan In the final field 9 Dan lenguh yang mengguncang
kelambu
And the growl that makes the curtain shiver
10 Membujukmu: kau goyangkan susumu
Lures you: you sway your breasts
11 Ke arah seram dan bau asam Towards the eerie and acid smells 12 Tatkala hasrat menjulurkan lidah
yang merah
When desire sticks out its red tongue
13 Ke syahwat yang membasah Onto lust that moistens
14 Setelah itu, siuman. Dan kematian And then, awakens. And death 15 Di arena di mana lembu jantan
mengais-ngaiskan kaki
In the arena where the bull scuffs his feet
Where seconds seem to pour like rust from the sun
17 Di plasa tempat nasib menarik picu In the plaza where fate pulls the trigger
18 Pada rembang petang Sabtu In the waning light of Saturday evening
19 Kemudian kamar jadi terang Soon the room becomes bright 20 Dan dari ranjang itu sang
Minotaur menghilang
And the Minotaur vanished from the bed
21 Jam pun memasuki tanah The hour seeps into ground 22 Hanya maut luput Only death slips
23 Dari lezat yang lewat From the thrill passing 24 Di pusarmu, di pantatmu, yang tak
akan musnah
Though your navel, your loins, the imperishables
50 3. Doa Persembunyian (Prayer for Refuge)

My Lord who permeates the wooden walls of this village church
2 Di lembah yang kosong itu In the empty valley 3 Kusisipkan namamu Let me inter thy name 4 Jangan jadikan kerajaanmu Don’t let this be thy kingdom 5 Bebaskan aku dari sempit yang
gelap seperti surga yang gemetar
Free me from these dark narrows so like a fearful heaven
6 Beri aku tuah, dari isim yang asing Give me a spell, from a foreign chant
7 Seperti sepatah kata Ibrani Like the Hebrew word 8 Dari lidah tuan padri On the priest’s tongue 9 Beri aku merah anggur yang
tumpah
Give me the red of spilled wine
10 Sebelum mereka datang Before they come 11 Sebelum mereka melintasi makam
peladang
Before they cross the farmers’ graveyard
And seize you from the sleeping congregation of this Gethsemane 13 O Tuhan yang lenyap dalam ruang
kayu
Oh my Lord who has vanished into the wooden walls
14 Yang hitam, sehitam tembakau So dark, as dark as tobacco 15 Kusembunyikan namamu Let me hide thy name 16 Kusisihkan laparku, takutku,
pedangku
Let me shelve my hunger, my fear, my sword
