Damaged on reinforced concrete strucures can be due to a variety causes including
earthquake, excessive loading or corrosion of reinforcement. The appearences of the
damaged may be in the form of cracking, spalling or delamination of concrete cover
or particular element of concrete structure is broken. In the case of spalled or
delaminated concrete cover, patch repair may be applied to recover size and
appearence, to protect reinforcement from further corrosion, and partially to regain
its strength capacity. Material used for patching application should have
compatibilities with the existing concrete. These include compatible in mechanical,
dimensional dan durability characteristics. In term of mechanical compatibility,
repair material should have comparable in strength to the existing concrete. This will
dimensional compatibility, repair maerial could be subjected to tensile stress induced
by differential shrinkage between repair material dan existing concrete. This
dimensional incompatibility can lead to cracking and delamination. Whether
particular repair material will crack/delaminate or not depends on a variety factors:
shrinkage, creep, elastic modulus, tensile strength, bond strength and degree of
restraint. Any effort to develop repair material should consider all these paremeter in
order to have repair material that will resist againts cracking and delamination due
to restrained shrinkage.
The aim of this research is to obtain repair mortar containing polymer for application
in patch repair system. The use of polymer is intended to modify mortar so it will
become flexible. The flexibility property is important to reduce tensile stress induced
by restrained shrinkage as with this property repair material tends to deform more
under restrained shrinkage stress. This deformation results in releasing tensile stress
developed in repair material which, in turn, reduces the possibility of cracking and
delamination. The goal of this research can be achieved into two stages. The first
stage, which is carried out in the first year of the research, focus on obtaining
proportion of repair material and quantifying mechanical dan deformability
characteristics: compressive strength, tensile strength, bond strength by mean of slant
shear, shrinkage and creep. These parameters are then will be used to formulate
prediction model to estimate tensile stress developed in repair material. The
formulation of prediction model will be carried out in the second year together with
validation of the model from the observation of restrained shrinkage cracking and
delamination tendency. The model proposed will be usefull for examining cracking
and delamination tendency of particular repair material.
Proportions of repair material were determined from the workability and strength
properties. After several preliminary investigation, the proportions were found to be
as follows: cement: sand rasio equals to 1:2.5, with water/cement rasio 0.5, and
superlasticizer and accelerator respectively 2% and 0.4% by weight of cement.
Meanwhile, the amount of polymer added to the mixes were 2%, 4% and 6% by
weight of cement. In addition to that mixes composition, commercial repair mortar
produced by manufacture was used for comparison purpose. All these composition
were subjected to testing to determine shrinkage, creep, compressive strength, tensile
The results of this resarch during the first year can be summarised as follows: Based
on measurement of 28-day compressive strength, tensile strength and slant shear it is
justified to use low proportion (2-4%) of polymer to modify mortar suitable for patch
repairing concrete with strength of about 20-30 MPa. However, further effort is
needed to improve the strength development of this material so it could gain high
strength at early age. On the basis of flexibility property, the inclusion of polymer
seems to produce repair material that will potentially reduce the risk of cracking due
to dimensional issues. The reduction in flexibility of repair material containing
