ROLE OF SME SECTOR

Indian market is growing rapidly in Industry, Service, Retail, IT, Food Processing, Manufacturing sectors and flow of Foreign Direct Investment has increased during the last decade. This growing trend creates excellent opportunities and challenges for Indian Companies.

In these developments, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises play an important role as the driving force for growth of national economy through employment generation, investments and exports. Indian SME sector produces 40% of the total industrial output of the country and contributes 34% to the exports.

Developing as well as the developed countries are making more and more efforts for promoting SME Sector by trying to resolve the issues and problems faced by them in the era of globalisation. While globalisation offers plenty of opportunities for SMEs in global markets, it also poses a number of challenges. Although SMEs are flexible and can quickly adapt to changes, they can be successful in the global trade only if they are competitive in terms of price, quality of goods and are able to meet the delivery schedules.

ß

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Globalisation has brought in many advantages to the SMEs by opening up world markets, but has also posed many challenges. Indian manufacturers, especially SME Sector, have to struggle a lot to cope with these challenges and the situation is aggravated by flooding of Indian markets with good quality - low cost products and high technology processes from many countries. The only way to sustain in face of these challenges is to produce better quality products at competitive rates. With predominantly rural background of Indian entrepreneurs, it is imperative that our SME Sector should be extended full support from all relevant quarters.

SMEs, especially manufacturers, are facing problems in the areas such as quality production, quality control, marketing, finance, exports, skilled labour for last many years. Because of these

issues, some of the manufacturers had to diversify their businesses or shut down their units completely. Since India is the manufacturing hub comprising mostly of SMEs, they should be provided with all assistance and support.

The entrepreneurs have been finding it increasingly difficult to cope with this situation and are not in a position to promote their businesses and exports. They are required to be put on a footing similar to their competitors by nurturing them and providing them support in all strategic areas. We are pursuing with the Government agencies to review the situation and to find ways & means for enhancing the competitiveness of Indian SMEs in global markets, while ensuring that they remain competitive in the domestic market as well. The biggest challenge is to educate the SMEs and more importantly the organisations supporting SMEs about the threats and opportunities associated with the changing environment, so as to enable them to draw appropriate responses & strategies to face the global competition.
