Volume of International Cargo at 4 Main Sea Port (000 ton)
During 2001-2004, number of sea transport passenger declined, however it increased as much as 9.4% (1.2 million people) from 12.8 million people in 2004 to 14 million people in 2005. Meanwhile, freight transport user has been increasing about 7.6% yearly during 2001-2005. Four biggest ports for international and domestic transport are Tanjung Priok, Tanjung Perak, Makassar and Belawan.
Sea transport service is a substitute for air transport service. One of the reasons behind the drop of sea transport user is increase in air transport user. However, due to rise in trade between islands and international trade, port service for loading and unloading must be improved, especially in those 4 big ports. Means and infrastructure need to be developed by government and private companies to improve service quality.
