Ellyati’s and Yuni Kristianingsih’s Translations of Proper Names in the Novel Entitled The Old

Man and Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Thesis: English Department. Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts.

Sebelas Maret University.

The objectives of this research are to find out the techniques employed by the translators in translating

proper names in the novel entitled The Old Man and The Sea and to know the accuracy and acceptability

of the translations of proper names. The sources of data are the novel The Old Man and The Sea written

by Ernest Hemingway and its translation entitled Kisah Lelaki Tua dan Laut by Dian Vita Ellyati and

Lelaki Tua dan Laut by Yuni Kristianingsih. This research is a descriptive qualitative research which employs total sampling technique. There were 54 proper names found in the English novel.

The analysis of types of proper names shows that there are nine types of proper names, they are geographical names (14 data or 25,92%), personal names (11 data or 20,37%), names of institution & organization (9 data or 16,67%), holy names (9 data or 16,67%), names of days & months (5 data or 9,26%), names of species (3 data or 5,56%), titles of pieces of arts (2 data or 3,70%), brand names (2 data or 3,70%), and heavenly body (1 datum or 1,85%).

The analysis on translation technique shows that Dian Vita Ellyati applies five techniques in the novel

Kisah Lelaki Tua dan Laut, they are transference (31 data or 57,41%), translation (8 data or 14,81%), addition (1 datum or 1,85%), couplets (7 data or 12,96%) and transcription (8 data or 14,81%). While,

Yuni Kristianingsih applies seven translation techniques in the novel Lelaki Tua dan Laut. They are

transference (31 data or 57,41%), translation (8 data or 14,81%), addition (1 data or 1,85%), omission (1 datum or 1,85%), couplets (7 data or 12,96%), generalization (1 datum or 1,85%), and transcription (5 data or 9,26%).

The analysis of an accuracy level in the novel Kisah Lelaki Tua dan Laut shows that 50 data or 92,59%

are considered to be accurate translation, 3 data or 5,56% are considered to be less accurate translation

and 1 datum or 1,85% is considered to be inaccurate translation. Meanwhile, in novel Lelaki Tua dan

Laut shows that 51 data or 94,44% are considered to be accurate translation, one datum or 1,85% is considered to be less accurate translation and 2 data or 3,70% are considered to be inaccurate translation.

In addition, the analysis of an acceptability level in novel Kisah Lelaki Tua dan Laut shows that 45 data

or 83,33% are considered to be acceptable translation and 9 data or 16,67% are considered to be less

acceptable translation. Meanwhile, in novel Lelaki Tua dan Laut shows that 43 data or 79,63% are

considered to be acceptable translation, 10 data or 18,52% are considered to be less acceptable, and 1 datum or 1,85% is considered to be unacceptable.

In both novels, the technique results the highest level of accuracy and acceptability is transference, while translation and omission techniques produce the lowest level of accuracy and acceptability. The analysis

on the translation accuracy shows that the translation of proper names in the novel Lelaki Tua dan Laut

(translated by Yuni Kristianingsih) is more accurate than the translation of proper names in the novel

Kisah Lelaki Tua dan Laut (translated by Dian Vita Ellyati), while the analysis on the translation
