ABSTRACT

2014. Thesis. English Department: Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts. Sebelas

Maret University.

The purposes of this research are (1) to find out the types of proper names found

in the novel entitled The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero, (2) to find out the

translation techniques applied by the translator in translating proper names, (3) to describe how the translation techniques impact the translation quality in term of accuracy and acceptability.

This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The researcher uses purposive sampling technique in this research. The data of this research are all proper names in the

novel The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero and their Indonesian translation and

information collected through questionnaires given to the three raters. The total data in the novel are 365 data.

translator in translating proper name in the novel entitled The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost Hero. They are rendition (59 data / 16, 16 %); copy (194 data / 53, 15 %); transcription (16 data / 4, 38%); substitution (12 data / 3, 28%); recreation (1 data / 0, 27%); transposition (5 data / 1, 36%); conventionality (6 data / 1, 64%). The combination techniques are rendition and copy (41 data / 11, 23%); rendition and transcription (6 data / 1, 64%); rendition and addition (4 data / 1, 09%); rendition, copy, and addition (2 data / 0, 54%); rendition and recreation (1 data / 0, 27%); rendition and deletion (1 data / 0, 27%); copy and transcription (2 data / 0, 54%); copy and addition (7 data / 1, 91%); copy and substitution (1 data / 0, 27%); transcription and addition (7 data / 1, 91%).

The analysis on the translation accuracy in the novel The Heroes of Olympus: The

Lost Hero shows that 360 data (98, 63%) are considered as accurate data, 4 data (1, 09%)

are considered as less accurate and 1 (0, 27%) data is considered as inaccurate date. The

analysis on the translation acceptability in the novel The Heroes of Olympus: The Lost

Hero shows that 359 data (98, 35%) are considered as acceptable data, 2 data (0, 54%)

are considered as less acceptable and 4 (1, 09 %) data are considered as unacceptable. The technique which produces translations in high level of accuracy is rendition. The translation of proper names by applying rendition technique can be conveyed because proper names in the target text are translated equivalently. The techniques which produce low level of accuracy translations are substitution and addition technique. The substitution of proper names leads to the difference of meaning between source text and target text. The addition technique makes the names more ambiguous because there are some additions of unnecessary words or information in the target text.

The technique which produces translations in high level of acceptability is rendition technique because of the use of familiar and common words which makes the translation of proper names sound natural. The techniques which produce translations in low level of acceptability are copy and addition technique. Some of copy names are unfamiliar and rarely used in the target text. The addition makes the names sounds awkward and less natural because this technique adds unnecessary words or information in the target text.
