O utline:

T a n jir o , the young master o f Karagotoya, f e l l in lo v e w ith Yonehachi, a g e is h a - g ir l, wh i l e he had a b e a u tifu l

fiancee named Ocho and set up housekeeping w ith Yone- hach i.

In the meantime T a n jiro c ame to lo s e his heart to another g e is h a -g i r l named Adakichi.

Thus Yonehachi and Adakichi g o t confronted w ith each other in everyth in g and i t gave r is e to trou b les between them. On the other hand, T a n jiro took pa in s in search fo r

t he valuable te a -p o t o f h is ma s t e r ' s fa m ily w hi ch had been s to le n , and t r aced to the fa c t that the te a -p o t was in the hand o f a samurai named Sabunta, who had s to le n i t . Then, he asked Adakichi to g e t back t he te a -p o t from Sabunta

under preten ce o f lo v e , and promised her that he would s ever

connections wi t h Yonehac h i , her r i v a l s , i f she succeeded in g e t tin g i t . One n ig h t, Yonehachi, in search fo r T a n jir o rushed by

mistake in to the room where Adakich i and Sabunta were s i t t ­ in g fa ce to f ace, and was put to shame by Adakichi. There­ upon Han j i r o , who had been in search f o r the te a -p o t aided by T a n jir o , made h is appearance in the scene and took i t back by k i l l i n g the wicked sam urai.

Yonehach i was impresse d by the fa ith fu ln e s s o f Ada- k i ch i to T a n jiro and g ot r e c o n c ile d w ith h er.

--- The Fi r s t Act — —

-Scene 1: On the bank at Mukojima.

There l i e s a grass-grown bank about si x f e e t in h e i g h t f r o m t h e r i g h t t o t h e l e f t . O n t h e l e f t t h e r e i s a f l i g h t o f s ton e-steps in fr o n t o f whi c h stands a la rg e stone t o r i i (a sh rin e-en tran c e)

On the r ig h t th e re i s seen the back sigh t o f a wayside t e a - s t a l l w ith a bamboo-blind in the f r o n t .

Evening about the end o f May. The cu rta in r is e s .

On the bank, ge is h a ’ s samisen ca r r ie r s Toyokichi and Ki suke a re tak in g a r e s t and smoking.

T oyokich i: H a llo , K isuke-don. I hear a te a p a rty i s to be held to -n ig h t at Mr. K a jiw a ra 's geisha- hous e . I t seems th ere are many gu ests, doesn’ t i t ?

Kisuke: W e l l . But the g e is h a - g ir ls are no t le e s than the g u ests. To say nothing o f the pic k e d g e i ­ s h a - g ir ls from Nakamachi, dancing master s ,

Toyokichi : Oh s u r e ! H a , h a , h a !

(The two e x i t to the r ig h t in la u gh ter. The v o ic e o f Osen, a g i r l o f the t e a - s t a l l , i s heard from w ith in the bamboo- b l i n d . )

Osen: As i t has become shady, I w i l l raise the b lin d .

(Osen winds th e b lin d . In the t e a - s t a l l Tanj i r o , former adopted-son o f Karagotoya, and h is fia n cee Ocho are s i t t i n g op p osite to each other using f a n s . )

Tanj ir o : I t has become p r e tt y c o o l. I t i s across only a narrow s t r ip o f water by b oat.

Say, Ocho, you have com e through m any hard- ships, h a ve n 't you?

Ocho: O my! I did not in vain make a prayer to G o d f o r a ll f e a r a n d s o r r o w . I h a v e

(T a n jir o le a v e s the s t a l l urging Ocho to go home. Thereupon the boat seems to have rea ched . )

(Thereupon g e is h a - g ir ls Yonehachi and Umeji make t h e ir appearance accompanied r

by Yoshitake , a buffoon and Yosuke , a samisen c a r r i e r . )

Yonehac hi : Oh, you are Tan-san , a r e n 't you? Tan: Oh, Yoneha ch i!

Y o n e : O my! I t i s a lon g t i me since I saw you l a s t , Ocho-san! You have qu ite grown up and become v e r y b e a u tifu l. You may marry somebody now.

Tan: Sa y , Yonehac hi , I s h a ll t e l l you d e t a ils la t e r . I t was almost a su rp rise to me th a t I met

her th ere by chance I hear she l e f t the gay qu arters a f t e r having su ffered hardships.

Ocho: Exouse me, Yonehach i - san. I could not say anything becau se I becam e sad havin g met you a f t e r a long t i me. Don't think i l l o f me ple a s e.

Yonehachi : By no means. You s e em to hav e s u ffe re d many ha r d s h i p s . Since I l e f t your house, I have, t r u l l y speaking, become a g e is h a - g ir l o f e s ta b lis h e d rep u ta tion in Fukagawa through the g ood favou rs o f Ume ji- s a n and oth er persons.

( a f t e r h e s it a t in g a b i t . ) I came to exchange vows o f lo v e wit h Young Master by chance and now we are ju s t l i k e man and w ife though we don’ t l i v e to g e th e r , (makes a sm ile pu rposely) Excuse me, but you seem to be in di s t r e ss c i r - cumstance s . You need not h e s it a t e in asking me f o r anything, I am ready to lo o k a f t e r you as much as p o s s ib le .

Ocho: Say, Yonehach i-s a n . Many thanks f o r your kindness, but i t pains me f o r the t wo o f us to be lo o ked a f t e r by you, g e is h a - g ir ls , who were form erly in s e r v ic e a t my house. So you need not be envious about i t . From now on I am goin g t o ta k e c a re o f m y brother to h elp him.

house fo r you. So you had b e t t e r remove to i t . Your present resid en ce i s so fa r f o r my goin g and coming, and m oreover, i t is unsafe f o r you as you see now.

U meji: Say, Yonehachi-san, you r way o f speaking

does not seem moderate. You need not be jea lou s o f him l i k e a woman strange to a l i f e o f shame . I am a fr a id that would sound harsh.

Yone: No. Le t me do what I li k e . (to T a n jiro ) C a n 't you take my advi c e ? You are going to run away somewhere w ith Ocho-san, a r e n 't you?

Tan: Don't be suspicious o f me lik e th a t. Now I want to go t o the house o f a woman named Oyosh i who has been lo o k in g a f t e r Ocho

Tan: Good-by e , Yonehach i. Ocho: Good l uck t o you.

(Ocho goes down the bank making vows to Yonehach i and o t h e r s .)

Yone: Say, Tan-san ! ( approaches h im .) Come back as soon as p o s s ib le . How

h orried you a re ! (P in ches him s e c r e t ly ) Tan: Ouch! What a th in g you should do!

Ume j i : Enough! She i s mere a g i r l , you see. Tan: Hum. You lo o k c ra z y .

Yone: I am crazy a f t e r a l l . T h erefo re you don 't know what I may do!

(She throws her fan away and fo llo w s T a n jiro )

Tan: Enough! Drop i t . Say, Ume ji- s a n , I le a v e her to you.

Ume j i : That does not become you, Yonehach i. I t is s i l l y o f you to do such a thing. Yone: W e l l ----. But I mus t keep sharp watch

Ume: Nonsense!

Yoshi taka: Now S is t e r . Let us s t a r t b e fo re g e t t ­ ing dark.

Scene 2: In the Sumida R iv e r .

(In the middle o f the r i v e r , th ere f l o a t s a r o o f boat w ith a b lin d . Soon the boat of T a n jiro and Oyone approaches the o th e r.

Thereupon M a s a ji, a gei s h a - g i r l appears f r om w ith in the b lin d .)

Masaji : Oh, Tan-san! Where are you going?

Tan: Oh, M asaj i - s a n ! Ar e you goin g to the upper way? (tu rns back and smi l e s . )

Masa: ( Fin d in g Ocho) Oh, Ocho-san! You are having a good time o f i t .

(Thereupon Adakichi, another geish a - g i r l , sees o f f the boat o f Tanji r o , standing at the bow.)

Adakichi: H a llo , Masa j i , who i s th at gentleman? Masa: He i s th is o f Yonehachi, you see.

(Shows a thumb.)

Adakichi: Then, he i s ---- ? (T o tte r s a b i t . ) Mas a ji: Be c a r e fu l!

Adakichi: (Absent-m indedly) What a handsome man , he i s !

(Adakichi i s struck by Tan j i r o . Ma s a ji looks a t her f ace w ith amazement. Ta n jir o 's b o a t gradua l l y g e ts out o f s ig h t .)

The Second Ac t: Scene 1

The stage in d ic a te s the entrance o f Obanaya, a resta u ra n t, a t Fukagawa. On the r ig h t sid e th ere stands an elega n t g a te with a r o o f.

Evening in the end o f June.

The cu rta in r is e s with a popular song.

From w ith in the g a te , Furushima Sabunta, a samurai, wearing t wo swords, makes his appearance accompanied by m aid-servant Ohana.

Ohana: Many thanks fo r your continued favour. Good n i ght , si r .

(Goes back and en ters the house.) Sabunta: I t i s very com fortable to go under the

in flu en ce o f drink in the evening breeze.

Matsube: Sabunta: Matsube:

mo to, and went f i r s t t o Ma ts umoto. I t was a m istake. I should have been a b le to have a drink i f I had come here f i r s t . I have got g r e a tly disappointed.

(Thereupon Matsube, the c le r k o f Kara- g oto ya , appears.)

H a llo , master!

(S tops) Oh, c le r k o f Karagotoya!

Matsu-S a b u n t a : I s t h a t s o ? I f I had no urgent b u si-ness, I mig h t go bac k ag a in to have a drin k. (Takes out a s i l v e r coin )

You may have a drink somewhere.

Matsube: Thank you very much. By the way, master about the te a -p o t in q u e s t io n ----.

Sabunta: (Looking around) Hey! What i s the ma t t e r w ith the t ea - pot?

Ma ts ube: A c e rta in person wishes to g e t the tea­ pot y o u le ft in m y c a r e a t a h ig h p r ic e . Do you care to s e l l i t ?

Sabunta: W e ll. I am ea ger t o dispose o f i t , but i t is n ot y e t the r ig h t time. That tea ­ pot n a m ed Zan getsu is the preciou s trea­ sure o f the H atakeyam a fam ily, and they seem to be in search f o r i t under s t r i c t in v e s tig a tio n . You must not take i t out ca r e l essl y l e s t the ma t t e r should be la id ba re , I le a v e i t in your s t r i o t care t i l l

the sensation i s over, you see.

Matsube : By the way, I mus t t e l l that H a n jiro , who was disowned because he lo s t the te a ­ p o t, i s liv in g , a t Nakaura q u ite near f r o m h ere. You must keep a sharp watch , th e re fo re .

-Sabunji : That i s qu ite unsafe. Who i s h id in g him then?

M atsu He I s under the c are o f my form er master named T a n jiro , and i s s e c r e t ly lo o k in g fo r the te a -p o t.

Sabu ji: W e ll, I must be c a r e fu l a l l th e more. T a n jir o is a g o o d - fo r - n o t h in g a f t e r a l l , I suppose. I f he backs up H a n jiro he is a nuisance to me. You s h a ll dispose o f him by the way.

Ma t su: W ell — .

Sabun: T i l l that tim e, the t e a - p o t ---- .

M a t s u : Y e s , I w i l l k e e p i t w i t h g r e a t e s t c a r e . Sabun: You must be ca r e fu l so as not to arouse o th e rs ' su spicion.

Matsu: Ther e i s no anxiety about i t , s i r . Good n ig h t , Sabunta-sama.

Sabun: See you again.

(The t wo p art from each other a nd e x it . Thereupon Kohama, a w a itre s s , makes her appearance.)

Kohama: What on earth i s the m atter w ith T a n jir o -san, white s i s t e r Ada k ich i has bean w a itin g fo r him? I cannot remain w ith her because s h e is s o im patien t. By the way I heard

I cannot but f e e l uneasy to have a se­ c re t m eeting w ith Adakichi by s te a lth . I had b e tte r go home to n ig h t? (About to go back but stops a g a in .)

Inner room o f Obanaya fa c in g the garden. Ohana sn u ffs the caudle. Oki n i s s i t t i n g on the verandah, Os e i standing in the garden.

Hana: I wonder why Adak ich i - san is in a way lik e th a t!

Kin : She had been very nervous, standing, s i t t i n g g e ttin g out or coming in , be­ cause Ta n jir o i s la t e to come.

Se i: Tan -san is a h appy man, anyhow;

Adakichi-san is g ive n up to him w h ile he i s Yonehachi-san' s lo v e r .

Hana: Now I remember, she s a id she made a coat f o r him I hear she i s going to

b rin g i t to n ig h t and h elp him to wear i t. Kin: I f Yoneha ch i-s a n know such a th in g (m a k es

horns with fin g e r s ) the m atter would become s e rio u s , I suppose.

Sei : Yonehach i- s an i s in t h is house, however. Hana: Good heavens i f they meet by c hance !

I am anxious about i t , but i t i s o f no use to be worried about o th e rs ' a f f a i r s . T h e r e f o r e l e t us put the room in order and go over th ere to hear the Kiyomoto r e ­ c it in g .

wrote a hot l e t t e r lik e th a t, but I wonder what the m atter w ith h im, I have been

waiting fo r him f o r about an hour.

(Thereupon T a n jiro appears l o oking before and behind.) Tan:

: What do you mean? A whale came up to the Shore o f Shibahame?

: Don't jok e. I am ta lk in g o f H anjiro-san who is sta y in g at your house. I hear he l o s t a valu able te a -p o t and was d is ­ owned from h is fa m ily , you see.

Tan: Formerly I was much o b lig e d to H a n jir o 's fa th e r. One day, la s t A p r il, Ha n jiro re c e iv e d i n tr u s t from Mr . Hatakayama the v a lu a b le t e a - p o t , but on h is way home he was deprived o f i t by somebody on the b rid ge of E it a i. Since then, the matter got com plicated and Hanji ro-san was d is ­ owned by his fa th e r . Though he has an honourable r e l a t i v e named Tobee in Chiba, he could not openly be allow ed to access th e re . So he came to stay at my house.

I am also anxious to fin d out the te a ­ pot that he may be allow ed to retu rn home.

( Sinks in th ou gh ts.)

Tan: L e t m e s e e - - - - . I f I c a n , m y f a c e w i l l b e saved to say nothing o f Hanji r o - sa n ----. Say, Adaki-c h i! C an't you fin d any good id e a fo r i t ? I should be g r a t e fu l fo r you through my l i f e . Ada: Well, th ere i s not no id e a , but ----.

Tan: What i s that?

Ada: I t i s the conventional coquetry which d eceives a man.

Tar: What do you mean, eh?

(Kiyomoto r e c i t i n g s t a r t s . Adakichi seems to have made up her mind a f t e r having ta n ta liz e d him very much.)

Ada: Well, I may p ersevere anything f o r the sake o f you.

(Okin and Osei ca rry out b o t t le s o f sake and e a ta b le s . )

Okin: Sorry to have kept you w a itin g .

Osei : Is th ere anything e ls e I can do fo r you? I s h a l l c a l l you when you are wanted. Tan:

( The wa itr e s s e s are about to le a v e the room. Adakich i c a l l s back Okin and whispers something to h er. Okin makes a nod and e x it s w ith O sei. )

Adakich i: Say, Tan-san! As f o r the m atter i n ques­ t io n , I w i l l d evice some way. Set your mind a t r e s t , th in k in g i t would be a l l r i gh t nine c ases out o f ten.

Tan: Thank you very much indeed. I sh a ll be g r e a t ly o b lig e d t o you.

Ada: But I must do i t even again st my w i l l . There­ fo r e you must a lso enter my fe e lin g s , you see. T
