ABSTRACT
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease as the result of pancreasinsuficiencyto produce a proper insulin,or, in this case, the body does not use insulineffectively produced by pancreas. Diabetes management consists of medication management, diet management and walking exercise. A prescribed walking exercise is performed 3-4 times a week with moderate intensity. The effect willincrease GLUT4 (glucose transporter type 4) and sugar transporters in skeletal significantly. Thus, the oxidation of fatty acids and glucose uptake will be accelerated. This study aimed to identify the effect of programmed walking exercise on blood glucose levels of patients with type 2 diabetes. This study used quasi-experimental design with one group sample pretest and posttest method without a controlled group. The sample consists of 37 patients with type 2 diabetes with consecutive sampling technique applied, based on the inclusive criteria.Thedata analysis was carried with t-test dependent. Based on the statistical test results showed that mean of blood glucose levels before the intervention (pre-test) is 258.54 mg/dl, while a mean blood glucose level after intervention (post-test) is 202.19 mg /dl. This statistical test showed that there was a
decrease in the mean of blood glucose levels of 56.35 mg / dl.The test results dependent t-test on blood glucose levels pretest and posttest, revealed the value of p = 0.001 or p value of <0.05. Therefore it can be concluded that there is a significant influence between the walking exercise programmed toward the changingof blood glucose levels among patients with type 2 diabetes. It is also recommended that this study results will guide the patients with type 2 diabetes to have physical and walking exercise on a regular basis as non-pharmacological therapy. Thus, it can prevent further complications of type 2 diabetes mellitusin the future.
