CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the aspects dealing with introduction. These aspects are background of study, statement of problems, purpose of study, significance of study, scope and limitation and definition of key term.

1.1 Background of study

Nowsdays most people spend their time and get pleasure by reading a literary work. They assume that literary work is really enjoyable and comforting; however, it is hard to understand. Actually, the purposes of reading literary works are to increase an insight and new experience for the reader about value, culture, language, and knowledge.

Literary work is a branch of literature. According to Merriam Webster’s

(1995:686), “Literature is writings in prose or verse; expecially, writings having

excellence of from or expression and presenting ideas of permanent or universal interest”. Therefore literature is an imaginative words that express the feelings and

experiences of human aspect.

Reading literature is really enjoyable, comforting but not easy to understand because the concepts of the content is packed by an imaginative words. Then reading literature needs a long time to understand the meaning.

Prose is the work of the author's imagination, which contains about life experiences or interesting things that sometimes it is difficult to predict. There are some important things to study a prose, they are reading the whole story and also undesrtand about the elements of the novel such as plot, setting, theme, character, point of view and conflicts in order to know what the author tells about.

In this thesis the writer focuses on analyzing a novel. Therefore, the writer chose thenovel “Percy Jackson &the Olympians: The Lightning Thief ” because of two reasons. The first reason is that novel is ablockbuster bestseller in 2005 for children and adolescent. The second is the author’s success in making the fiction story a real life story. Rick Riordan as the author describes about the Greek God mythology in modern way. He used his own version about the Greek Gods mythology. He describedthe main character, Percy,as a demigod. Demigod is a child of the God and a human being. And, Percy is the child of Poseidon and a human

Based on the explanation above, the writer focused on Percy Jackson’s anger. It is supported by the fact that there are a lot of conflicts that are influenced by the anger in this novel. So this study is entitled An Analysis of Percy Jackson’s

Anger in Rick Riordan’s Novel “Percy Jackson & the Olympians : The

Lightning Thief”

1.2 Statement of the problems

Based on the background above, the writer formulated the problems as follows :

1. What are the causes of Percy Jackson’s anger in the novel of “ Percy Jackson & the Olympians : The Lightning Thief ” ?

2. How does Percy Jackson express his anger in the novel ? 3. What is the effect of Percy Jackson’s anger on himself ?

1.3 Purpose of the study

The purposes are formulated as follows :

1. To know the causes of Percy’s anger in the novel of “ Percy Jackson &the Olympians : The Lightning Thief ”

2. To describe Percy’s ways to express his anger in the novel 3. To know the effect of Percy’s anger on himself

1.4 Significance of study

expected to be useful for the students who want to analayze the same subject as guidance of how to do a similar research. Besides, this study may also be useful for English Department students of Muhammadiyah University of Malang to have desirability in reading novels so that they get more knowledge and enrich the vocabulary. This study is hoped to give information to those who study literary works, especially about novel. It is also expected to the able to encourage the students of Muhammadiyah University of Malang to give more attention on literature, so the teaching learing process can run well.

1.5 Scope and limitation

This study has a scope of discussion of the novel written by Rick Riordans “

Percy Jackson & the Olympians : The Lightning Thief ”. There are many topics that

can be analyzed in this novel such as character, conflict, theme, plot, point of view but in this thesis the writer only focuses on Percy Jackson’s anger.

1.6 Definition of key terms

In order to avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation, it is necessary for the writer to provide the following definition of key terms:

1.6.1 Analysisis study of something by examining its parts (Oxford Learner’s Pocket Dictionary, 2000:13).
