ABSTRAK
Beberapa tahun terakhir pemerintah terus aktif melakukan penyuluhan mengenai bahaya merokok.

ABSTRACT
The last few years, the government continues to actively carry out counseling on the dangers of smoking. This is caused by the high number of active smokers in Indonesia. Although the smokers is aware of the dangers of smoking, but this didn’t make them stop to consume cigarettes. One of the dangers of smoking is the damage in the respiratory system. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to prove the difference in peak expiratory flow on the light smokers and moderate smokers.
This research using a cross sectional study. Subjects of this research are active smokers aged 19 to 22 years and enrolled as a student at the Faculty of Medicine, University of North Sumatra (n = 40). With the simple random method, subjects were divided into two groups: light smokers (n = 20) and moderate smokers (n = 20). The subjects that have been divided into two groups took a peak expiratory flow test by using the Peak Flow Meter. Results of the research are then processed by using SPSS for Windows.
The results of this research shows that 13 peoples have normal PEF and 7 peoples have abnormal PEF on the group of light smokers, while moderate smokers group shows that 5 peoples have normal value and 15 peoples have abnormal value. The result of analysis shows the difference of Peak Expiratory Flow were significantly (p <0.05) between group of light smokers and moderate smokers group.
