Spices and hot chillies are the ingredients of most dishes. The staple food of rice is served with vegetables, tofu/tempe and meat/egg/fish. The popular side dish sambal- a fiery hot blend of chillies, spices and some-times terasi (belacan), lemon juice and tomato for extra flavour - comes in an endless variety.As the population of Indonesia is pre-dominantly Moslem, pork is usually not served except in Chinese and non -Moslem restaurants and places

Transportation
Bus
Bis (buses) are the most common means of
public transportation in Jakarta.
There are a large number of bus companies servicing various routes throughout Jakarta. Large air conditioned buses with 40seats costs Rp 5,000/trip. For transportation on Jakarta’s
major streets, you can take the busway operating in eight street corridors for Rp. 3,500/trip.
Train
A commuter train (kereta api) runs regularly
from Jakarta to Bogor via Depok.
It is a cheapmass transport. A train station is available near the UI Depok campus to connect you to Jakarta and Bogor. Tra-sportation by commuter train costs Rp. 5,500 for air-conditioned economy class and Rp. 9,000 – Rp. 11,000 for air-conditioned express class. Trains to other major cities in Java leave from Gambir, Senen, and Jatinegara sta-tions. Some trains can be booked in advance. Trains have been a comfortable means of transportation for inter-city travel with reasonable price.
Taxis
There are a number of foreign banks and local banks offering various banking services in Ja-karta, such as Citibank, HSBC, ABN-AMRO, Standard Chartered and local banks such as BNI, Bank Mandiri, BCA, and CIMB-Niaga Many offer both Rupiah and foreign currency (usually US$) savings, term deposits, safe de-posit boxes, credit and debit card accounts, and foreign exchange services. Due to the
va-riety range of services and different proce-dures in each bank, it is better to make in-quiries directly by phone before conducting a direct visit.

(Government) offices close at 11.30 am - 1 pm on Fridays (Moslem mass prayer)
Ramadan (the ninth Moslem month) is a month of fasting for Moslems. Food counters and restaurants are generally closed during daytime, while discotheques are totally closed. Business hours begin half-an-hour later and close one hour earlier.
There are many telecommunication providers that you can choose for your cellular phone. Most of them usu-ally have many to offer beside basic phone and short messaging service, such as Multimedia service and internet broadband service. To name a few, there are Telkomsel GSM cellular provider which offers prepaid
card named ‘Simpati’, ‘Kartu AS’, and post-paid card
called ‘Kartu Halo’. There is also Excelcomindo that
has ‘XL’ prepaid card and ‘Explore’ postpaid card.
Some other product is Indosat with IM3 and Mentari. You can also choose CDMA cellular providers such as Esia, Smart or Flexi. Some of them also offers internet service.
Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)
ATMs are usually available in malls, shopping centers, and other strategic business areas. It operates with widely accepted international credit and debit cards affiliated with: Alto, Maestro, Cirrus, Plus, Master Card & Visa.
Money Transfer
Western Union services are available in many business areas to facilitate mon-ey transfer from overseas to customer in Indonesia. Some banks, such as Bank Mandiri, have joint-cooperation with Western Union.
Money Changer
Money changers are located throughout such as shopping malls, department stores and hotels. It is recommended to bring clean and unmarked money. Otherwise, the money changers will refuse to give exchange or deduct the ex-change rate. Local banks often give exex-change rates that may be better.
There has always been a great demand for student places
at the university dormitory and as a result there is likely to
be a shortage of on-campus accommodation.
New students are advised to apply early for on-campus
accommodation, but however they must be prepared for
not getting a place on the campus. Therefore it is worthy
to be prepared to look for off-campus accommodation.
Although this may take some time, additional expenses
and patience. However, students do not need too much
worry about it. The International Office staff will assist
new students to find a suitable accommodation upon

Depok offers a competitive standard of living at a comparatively low cost. Compared to other study destinations, Depok provides excellent value for money.
The annual cost of living depends on the student’s lifestyle
and type of accommodation.
Students should also have additional funds to pay for initial establishment costs, textbooks, equipment, incidentals, local transport, temporary accommodation, and entertainment.
It is also important that you allow for transport costs approximately Rp. 48.000 (US$4) per week if you live
off-campus. Include extra costs in your budget, if you intend to do some traveling to places like Bandung, Bali, or Sumatra while you are in Indonesia.

Nature

Nature is the most attractive recreation, but if you only have tight time to fly far from Jakarta, you can just go to the national park near from the capital city, Me-karsari Fruit Park or Taman Buah MeMe-karsari.
