MODUL 5 : PEMBANGUNAN KERJAYA

PENGENALAN

‘Rebranding and Employer’s expectation on graduates’, ‘Knowing Yourself’, ‘Branding

Yourself’, ‘Resume and Cover Letter’ dan ‘Job Interview’.

NOTA CERAMAH UNIT 1

EKPEKTASI MAJIKAN TERHADAP GRADUAN

(Rebranding and Employer’s Expectation On Graduates)

1.0Branding Yourself

 A personal brand is a unique set of attributes or characteristics that

differentiate you from others

These characteristics can be ‘functional’ (like having a particular degree or

proficiency in typing) or ‘perceived’ (like being a go-getter or thought leader)

Remember, ‘unique’ means that there aren’t lots more like you!

 The public expression and projection of an individual's identity, personality,

values, skills, and abilities. The idea of personal branding has evolved by

applying the concept of a product brand or a corporate brand to an individual

person. The creation of a personal brand can be used as a tool for personal

development as described by Thomas Gad and Anette Rozencreutz in their

book, Managing Brand Me (Momentum, 2002).

2.0Why Personal Branding Important

 Making sure you stand out from the crowd

Personal brands are ‘shortcuts’ to help employers see hiring you as ‘the right

decision’

 Allow you to tie your experience, education and interests together in a

coherent package

 More than ever, you are in control of your own career - and life goals

 Everyone is busy - employers don’t have time to ‘figure you out’

(8)

3.0Why You Need To Rebrand Yourself

As you grow, mature and accelerate in your career, everything you’ve created

has to be updated so that it accurately represent the current “brand you”.

 Attend training and re-skilling program to enhance your skills and

competency especially in those area that you are still lacking or you might

want to become multi-skill and multi-tasking.

 Once you gain some new skills or add-value to the current skills, you need to

do rebranding process.

4.0Employer’s Expectation

 Employers worldwide want well-rounded graduates who possess ( Work-ready

graduates );

1. Discipline-specific knowledge and skills (hard skills)

2. Desired soft skills

3. Relevant work experiences

(typically attained through internships or part time job)

 Based upon analysis of over 500 graduates recruitment advertisement in The

Star and New Straits Time by Ranjit Sigh for the period June – December 2006,

the most highly-valued soft skills were;

1. Oral and written communication skills

2. Interpersonal skills

3. Ability to work in a team

4. Problem solving & decision making

5. Leadership

6. Achievement orientation

7. Proactive(initiative)

(9)

9. Self-confidence

10.Independent with minimal supervision

11.Perform well under pressure

 MacLeod (2000) identifies the following as softy skills: ability to communicate

effectively, creativity, analytical thinking, problem -solving skills, leadership

skills, team-building skills, listening skills, diplomacy, flexibility,

change-readiness and self-awareness.

 The lack of soft skills has contributed greatly to graduates unemployment,

besides factors such as ;

1. Low proficiency in English,

2. Lack of relevance of university majors to job available.

3. Lack of work experiences (Hariati, 2007 )

(10)

 The inability to converse in English, a lack of experience and being choosy are

among the reasons many fresh graduates are unemployed. Young graduates also

demanded high salaries and rejected job offers that did not match their

qualifications. Career opportunities were abundant in the country with many

industries and sectors looking for young talent. Our aim is to produce a

world-class work force that can bring the country to a greater heights. (Datuk Maznah

Mazlan Deputy Human Resource Minister” Graduan Aspire 2011” KLCC16 July 2011 )

5.0Eight key Employability skills

 Communication skills

 Team work skills

 Problem Solving

 Initiative & Enterprise skills

 Planning & Organizing skills

 Self Management skills

 Learning skills

 Technology Skills

6.0Expected Personal Attributes

 Punctuality

 Dependability

 Loyalty

 Commitment

 Honesty & Integrity

 Enthusiasm

 Reliability

 Personal Presentation

 Common sense

(11)

 Sense of humor

 Balanced attitude to Work & Home life

 Ability to deal with pressure

7.0Why Soft Skills Important ?

 Survey conducted locally by Ranjit Sigh & A. Wahab in 2007 involving 336

Human Resource and Hiring managers indicated that 41.1 % of the

respondents ranked soft skills as the most important criterion in hiring fresh

university graduates followed by academic background, proficiency in

English, interview performance, graduate’s fit with company culture and

internship/relevant experience .

 A study conducted by the Standard Research Institute and Carnegie Mellon

Foundation involving 500 CEOs found that 75 % of long-term job success

depended on people skills and only 25 % on technical knowledge.

 Soft skills enable graduate employees to optimize their personality and

personal productivity.

Soft skills contribute towards enhancing graduates’ moral intelligence

In today’s world, knowledge is often out-of-date in 3 to 4 years and graduates

need to be prepared adequately for an unknowable future

8.0How can these skills be obtained?

 Studies

 University Activities/ Clubs/ Societies

 Extracurricular activities – hobbies & leisure interests

 Community involvement

(12)

9.0Changes in the world of work

Career moves are not always upward, zigzags are often required in today’s

flat organizations

• The individual needs to take responsibility for their career development, not

organizations

• There is less emphasis on a set list of job duties, and more emphasis on the

package of transferable skills and competencies a person has to offer

10.0 Comments by previous company interviewing UiTM students/graduates:

“Mempunyai kelayakan CGPA yang baik. Penggunaan Bahasa Inggeris memuaskan.

Tetapi calon kurang pengetahuan am/khusus pada industri. Perlu lebih prihatin

Exercise 1 : Writing Resume’s Career Objective Statement

You can stand out from the others if you just write your objective from the

employer's point of view, instead of your own.

The key: To write an objective that answers this question: "What's in it for me?" ,

which is on every employer's mind as he or she reads your resume.

To get you started, here is an example:

OBJECTIVE

Management position in procurement where over 10 years of experience will

add value to operations.

Avoid such cliche phrases as: "seeking a chance for advancement," or "where my

skills will be utilized," or "where I can further my career."

So, to keep your objective from being objectionable, put the focus where it belongs --

on the employer and their needs.

CAREER OBJECTIVE

Seeking a position as … ( the type of role) ..in ( explain, if relevant, the industry or

niche where you want to work)…

where my … ( describe two, perhaps three of your strongest assets - skills,

knowledge, attitude, experiences ) .. will contribute to…( key words which relate to

what is important to the employer- for example words like – profitability,

productivity, efficiency, image, reputation, service quality, safety, cost effectiveness

(25)

Career objective statement – An example:

Seeking a position as a Training Consultant in a service based industry where

my well develop instructional design and facilitation skills in Quality Service

Management can be utilised to assist the organization achieve a reputation for

delivering service excellence.
