Corporate Social Responsibility
Ever since its founding in 1951, the Company has been actively pro m oting progra ms that benefit the larger community. Through the years, Gajah Tunggal has been f ir m ly c o m m i t t e d t o a s t r o n g C o r p o r a t e S o c i a l Responsibility (CSR) program, for w hich it had received multiple awards. To Gajah Tunggal, CSR means more than just complying with existing rules, for the sole purpose of Public Relations, but also to serve for the betterment of the com munity in and around the w orkplace. Gajah Tunggal’s CSR program evolves around four pillars; health, e d u c a t i o n , c o m m u n i t y D e v e l o p m e n t a n d t h e environment.
H ealth
The health activities programs focuses on HIV/AIDS and drugs abuse prevention as well as reducing child mortality. The Company has pro-actively collaborated with Yayasan Kusuma Buana, an NGO specializing in prevention of HIV/ AIDS, to launch a programme evolving around compulsory HIV/AIDS prevention training of its employees by peer educators. In May 2004, the Company received an award from the Indonesian government and International Labour Organization (ILO) for its concern an d co m mit ment towards the HIV/AIDS prevention in the workplace. In 2007, G a j a h Tu n g g a l b e c a m e f o u n d i n g m e m b er o f t h e Indonesian Business Coalition on Aids (IBCA). This coalition aims to combat HIV/AIDS through the private sector, by the delivery of effective w orkplace programs that focus on awareness and prevention.
In 2007, the Company received prestigious recognition for its commitment to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, specifically the efforts of the Company to combat child mortality handed out by Metro TV and en d orse d by t he U nite d N a tio ns. Aro u n d 1 millio n immunizations shots have been administered to infants and children in the GT Industrial complex over the decades. By sponsoring anti-drugs events in cooperation with Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB), such as the Lights On Sejak berdirinya pada tahun 1951, Perusahaan terus aktif
melakukan program program yang dapat memberikan keuntungan bagi komunitas yang luas. Dalam beberapa tahun, GT telah berkomitmen untuk melakukan proram CSR ya n g t erp a d u d a n t ela h m e n eri m a b e b era p a penghargaan. Untuk GT, CSR merupakan lebih dari sekedar m e m a t u hi p era t ura n ya n g a d a , ya n g h a nya u n t u k kebutuhan hubungan masyarakat, tapi untuk melestarikan komunitas yang lebih baik. Program kerja CSR Gajah Tunggal ada empat pilar yaitu kesehatan, pendidikan, pengembangan Masyarakat dan kelestarian lingkungan hidup.
Kese h a t a n
Kegiatan kesehatan terfokus pada kegiatan penyuluhan HIV/Aids dan anti Narkoba dilingkungan kerja dan juga pengurangan kematian Balita. Perusahaan berkolabarasi dengan Yayasan Kusuma Buana, LSM yang khusus bekerja dalam penyuluhan HIV/AIDS , terutama penyuluhan dilingkungan kerja. Di bulan M ei 2004, Perusahaan menerima penghargaan dari pemerintah Indonesia dan Organisasi Buruh Internasional (ILO) untuk kepedulian dan komitmen terhadapan penyuluhan HIV/AIDS dilingkungan kerja. Pada tahun 2007, GT menjadi salah satu pendiri dari Indonesian Business Coalition on Aids (IBCA). Koalisi ini berusaha untuk membasmi HIV/AIDS melalui sektor swasta, dengan melalukan program dilingkungan kerja yang efektif dan fokus pada penyuluhan dan pengetahuan.
Pada tahun 2007, perusahaan menerima penghargaan atas ko mit m e n nya t erh a d a p U nit e d N a tio ns M ille niu m Development Goals, terutama usaha perusahaan untuk mengurangi kematian pada Balita, yang diberikan oleh Metro TV dan diprakasai oleh United Nations. Sebanyak 1 juta imunisasi telah diberikan pada anak anak dan Balita didalam Kompleks GT dalam beberapa dasawarsa. Community Building and Disaster Relief
In recen t years, In d onesia has been unfort unate t o experience several severe disasters. As part of the larger community, Gajah Tunggal sees it as its responsibility to provide timely and proper support to the needy victims of these disasters. M ost disaster relief efforts from the Company are coordinated in collaboration with United in Diversity (UID) Foru m . A f t er t h e Tsu n a m i w it h t h e assistance of UID, Gajah Tunggal w as one of the donors engaged in the reconstruction of the village of Sirombu, Nias. Other activities the Company actively supports are and aiding victims of the Jakarta floods in 2007 and the central Java Earthquake in 2006.
Pembangunan Lingkungan dan Bantuan
Bencana Alam
Dalam beberpa waktu belakangan ini, Indonesia sering mengalami bencana alam. Sebagai bagian dari komunitas, Gajah Tunggal melihat hal ini sebagai tanggung jawab untuk memberikan bantuan yang cepat dan tepat kepada para korban bencana alam yang sangat membutuhkannya. Sebagian besar bantuan bencana alam dari perusahaan disalurkan melalui United In Diversity Forum (UID). Setelah Tsunami, dengan bantuan UID, GT merupakan salah satu donor yang membantu pembanguan Desa Sirombu di Nias. Kegiatan perusahaan lainnya adalah membantu korban bencana banjir di Jakarta tahun 2007 dan bencana gempa bumi di Jawa Tengah pada tahun 2006.
Lin gku n g a n Hid u p
Selain komitmen perusahaan kepada produk dan proses produksi yang ramah lingkungan, pada tahun 2007 GT bersama sama dengan Conservation International (CI) memberikan bantuan dana untuk melindungi satwa yang langka dan program pemanasan bumi.
Di Indonesia, bantuan akan menargetkan proyek konservasi di daerah konservasi Batang Toru di Sumatera Utara, dengan melindungi daerah tersebut yang merupakan tempat satwa satwa yang langka seperti Orang Utan Sumatera dan juga membantu kehidupan komunitas lokal setempat. Environment
N e x t t o t h e C o m p a n y ’s s t r o n g c o m m i t m e n t t o environ mental friendly products and m anufacturing processes, in 2007, Gajah Tunggal joined hands with Conservation International (CI) in an effort to combat climate change and protect endangered species, financially contributing to multiple projects. In Indonesia donations will target conservation projects in the Batang Toru conservation area in Northern Sumatra, protecting habitat which is home of threatened species such as the Sumatran orangutan, by amongst others supporting the livelihoods of local communities to ensure the sustainability of the program. These efforts will make Gajah Tunggal the first tire manufacturer to successfully offset its carbon footprints in 2008.
