ABSTRACT

The goal of this research is to identify the different types of deixis and the most dominant deixis in the Kings'man Movie. This study used a qualitative approach, with data gathered by watching the film and trancribing the dialogue delivered by the characters. The data used in this paper are the movie The King's Man and its transcript. This study looked into two research questions. The first question is to determine what types of deixis are found in The King's Man Movie, and the last is to determine the types of deixis that are most commonly used in The King's Man Movie. The researcher discovered 786 deixis data. The data was categorized to person, time, place, discourse, and social deixis. The result showed that there are 666 person deixis (85%), 14 time deixis(2%), 22 place deixis (3%), 52 discourse deixis(7%), and 32 social deixis( 4%). the most dominant types of deixis is person deixis.

1. INTRODUCTION

Communication skills are essential in everyday life. The delivery of language to a larger audience of speakers and listeners is referred to as speaking. The participant determines whether or not to speak when speaking. If both the speaker and the audience focus on the discussion, the audience can have a decent discussion.

Pragmatics is the study of examining and determining the meaning of utterances from the speaker to the addressee or hearer. Pragmatics, according to Kreidler (1998:18), is a branch of linguistics that studies meaning. This implies that the meaning of a language form should not be predicted solely on the basis of linguistic

information, but should also take into account any concerns about social world knowledge.

For the reasons stated above, the writer becomes intrigued to find out deixis in dialogue affects one’s understanding of another individual’s intention in “The King’s Man (2021)” really have an impact, or not.

2. LITERATURE REVIEW Deixis

Deixis is the investigation of deictic or indexical articulations in language, similar to you, now and, today. according to Levinson (1983) deixis is categorized into five types, the types are person deixis, time

deixis, place deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis.

 Person deixis

Personal deixis, or person deixis, concerns itself with the grammatical persons directly involved in an utterance like the speaker and the addressee, those not directly involved, and those mentioned in the utterance.

 Time Deixis

Temporal deixis, or time deixis, concern itself about the different times associated with and alluded to in an expression. This incorporates time qualifiers like "now", "then", and "soon", as well as various verbal tenses. A further model is the word tomorrow, which means the following sequential after quite a while after any day it is utilized.

"Tomorrow," when spoken on a day last year, indicated an alternate day from "tomorrow" when spoken one week from now.

 Place Deixis

Spatial deixis, or place deixis, concern itself about the spatial location relevant to the utterance.

Comparatively to Personal deixis, the areas might be either those of the speaker and adresser or those of people or object being alluded to.

Contemporary English use just two adverb which is here and there.

There are also some verb of motion, like go and come, which hold a deictic sense when they are utilized to mark movement toward the speaker, for instance, Come to my room, or away from the speaker, as in Go to my room

 Discourse deixis

Discourse deixis is alluded to as text deixis, refers to the utilization of articulations inside an expression to refer to parts of the dicourse that contain the expression including the actual expression.

 Social deixis

Social deixis concerns the social data that is encoded inside within several expression, like relative societal position and commonality.

3. RESEARCH METHOD

The author uses qualitative descriptive research in this paper to analyze the data.

According to Sutopo (2006:40), a detailed and in-depth description of the condition portrait of what actually happens in the subject of inquiry is referred to as qualitative descriptive research. The dialogue obtained from the script of the movie The King’s Man (2021) is served as the data source for this research.

4. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Following the data that

been collected and analyze, there are five types of deixis that appear in The King's Man (2021) film script. Person deixis, space deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and

al deixis. In this research, there are 786 types of deixis in the film script of The King's Man (2021). The complete data findings on the occurrence of deixis forms in the movie script of The King's Man (2021). The complete data findings on the occurrence of the deixis forms in The King’s Man

movie script will be shown on the Table.1 and Graphic.1 below.

Table 2 reveals that the total number of person deixis found in the speech is 666, with the dominant type of deixis used in the speech is “I” (201). Followed by

“You” (179), “My” (92), “We” (73),

“Our” (37), “Me” (37), “They” (17), “He”

(16), “Us” (7) and the last one is “She” (7).

The examples of person deixis can be seen as follows:

 Subject Pronoun 'I'

Here is the example of subject pronoun 'I' in movie script of The King’s Man (2021), spoken by Shola: "I got him! Stop fire! "I use the subject pronoun 'I' to refer to ourselves

 Subject Pronoun 'You'

Here is the example of subject pronoun 'You' in movie The King’s Man (2021), spoken by Orlando Oxford: "You have to stay with me"

We use the subject pronoun 'You'

when we are addressing to two or more people.

 Subject Pronoun 'We'

Here is the example of subject pronoun 'We' in movie The King’s Man (2021), spoken by Orlando Oxford: "We need to get home, where I can protect you!" We use the subject pronoun 'We' to refer to a group of people that includes us, or an organization that we belong to.

 Subject Pronoun 'He'

Here is the example of subject pronoun 'He' in movie The King’s Man (2021), spoken by Conrad Oxford: "He wants us to swap places." We use the subject 'He' to talk about men and boys (people who identify as male)

 Subject Pronoun 'She'

we make an unannounced visit at 3:00.." We use the subject pronoun 'She' to refer to women and girls (people who identify as female)

 Subject Pronoun 'They'

Man (2021), spoken by Orlando Oxford: "They robbed, lied, pillaged, and killed, until one day..." We use the subject pronoun 'They' to refer to someone when we don't know their gender.

This in here were an expression said by Emili Oxford that indicate she’s mad because they are wasting their precius time on something that she deemed useless.

5. CONCLUSION

According to the results of the data that been collected, the deixis types in themovie The King's Man (2021) are the person deixis, place or spatial deixis, time or temporal deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The total data is 786 showing deixis. The top percentage of the occurrence on the deixis types in The King’s Man movie is person deixis(85%).
