ABSTRACT
Breast cancer is the second killer in women after cervical cancer. The prevalence of breast cancer in Indonesia in 2013 is estimated at 0.5 ‰ or as many as 61.682 people. More than 60% of breast cancer patients come to the doctor at an advanced stage. Therefore, early detection of breast cancer is highly recommended to reduce delays in diagnosis. One of early detection for breast cancer is breast self-examination (BSE).
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between level of education and level of knowledge about BSE. The design of this study is an analytic study with cross-sectional method. The population were women aged 20-50 years in the village of Tanjung Rejo, Medan. These samples included 126 people who were taken by consecutive sampling method. The data was analyzed by chi square test.
Based on 126 respondents, three respondents are out of school/uneducated (2.4%), 43 respondents are primary education (34.1%), 47 respondents are secondary education(37.3%), and 33 respondents are tertiary education (26.2%). Good level of knowledge about BSE according to education level is highest in secondary education (50%), followed by tertiary education (30%), primary education (20%), and uneducated (0%). In a sequence, sufficient level of knowledge are secondary education (37.2%), primary education (30.2%), tertiary education (27.9%), and uneducated (4.7%). Lack of knowledge is highest in primary education (41.3%), followed by secondary education (33.3%), tertiary education (26.2%), and uneducated (2.4%). The hypothesis test results showed that no relationship between education level with the level of knowledge about BSE (p value 0,506).
